We support students through the three major components of a course of ethnic studies through the lens of their gifted identity and critical thinking skills, a BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Global Majority) college student mentoring program and leadership training to develop their academic and cultural identities. Partnering with school districts, colleges and universities, community elders and organizations, teachers, families and students, SCDEP is shifting Gifted and Talented, honors, Concurrent Enrollment, Advance Placement and International Baccalaureate classrooms and programs to reflect the diversity of our nation. Identifying specific gifted criteria used to identify gifted students that is culturally responsive is vital in increasing the percentages of BIPOC students in advanced coursework. SCDEP uses culturally inclusive strategies with concrete solutions to increase the number of students of color in Gifted & Talented and Advanced Coursework. false false 207820 179000 28820 Our school-based program (working with students during the day as a course) gives access to advanced courses (gifted and talented, Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate program, honors and concurrent enrollment courses) to BIPOC middle and high school students. Component 1- School-Based Course: Usually in the form of an elective course, our program works with schools to schedule a time during the school day to support students in a formal classroom structure. Students learn about their gifted identity through the lens of their cultural history to instill pride and confidence in themselves and their culture and/or racial identity. There are visits from community experts, tours of Ethnic historical buildings/museums and presentations from influential leaders during our classes weekly. With the culturally rich curriculum, students have history, science, and economics taught in a context that is relatable. Teaching our students about the gifted people in history with the same cultural identity encourages them to embrace their giftedness as a gift. The course combines scholarly readings, lectures, mentorship, and discussions with hands-on assignments such as field trips, research, service learning, and community-based projects. Our college readiness curriculum supports students with creating academic goals, study skills for high school and college, and learning how to navigate advanced coursework. Students explicitly learn critical thinking skills that are necessary for excelling in advanced coursework and college. Component 2: Near-Peer Mentor program Our second component, BIPOC college Mentors, allows SCDEP students to observe and learn from students and professionals who share their identity, creating positive images to replace negative biases with positive truths. Our mentors provide their lived experiences as college students and provide tutoring and academic support to our students. Through Handshake postings, we recruit college students from the surrounding colleges (Metro State University, University of Colorado at Denver, Community College of Denver, Regis University) to find the best match. Career professionals in various fields also visit our students to share their journey to success and different career options and demonstrate details of their profession (engineers show and teach robotics etc.). Representation in various professions allows students to observe adults that share their culture. During bi-weekly visits, professionals of color visit our classes from various career paths to present their careers and the education/skills needed to be successful in their field. We contact local career associations and businesses and use our personal connections and Alumni Associations in order to find willing professional participants. Component 3: Leadership Development Our third component acts to allow students in our program to build great future leaders in a spirit of servanthood as they give back to their school and share their newfound cultural awareness with peer knowledge sharing. Students take a lesson aligned with the era or content being taught in their classes and share/teach their advanced class or general class a lesson from our curriculum. This gives them the power to share their knowledge of concepts covering diverse topics and gives them authority in class to boost their confidence. This also allows their peers to learn content that uplifts marginalized history that may not come from those communities. The BIPOC students in our program will present as experts in areas of subjects that they've learned from our program that are typically in front of their non-Black peers. Students have the option to present as a group, as an individual or have their teachers present with recognition from our students. 5000 5000 0 Our Gifted Summer Camp is a condensed version of our school-based program with added components of cultural performances from our community, and an advocacy workshop for parents to understand their students' newfound gifted identity superpowers and what to look for in successful advanced programs at local schools. Our summer camp is conducted independently during the day in the summer. We usually host our summer camp in person at a neighborhood school that matches the demographics of the students that we serve. When we conducted virtual summer camps, we were able to offer our summer camp to students nationally. Our summer camp is open to any BIPOC student in the community that already or wants to take advanced coursework and for gifted, high achieving, or not identified students. Through our curriculum, students are able to gather a body of evidence to support their enrollment in advanced coursework and the formal gifted identification process for their school district. 15000 15000 0 As we support middle and high school students in gifted education and advanced coursework, the support of our BIPOC college mentors is vital in the development of our students. Our college mentors provide their lived experiences as a college student and provide tutoring and academic support to our students. They support our students in hours of support during our school program and also provide community support while hosting Mentor Monthly sessions and weekly college readiness workshops. We use the observations of our Education Coordinators and our college mentors to begin the process to formally recommend the unidentified gifted students for gifted school services. Equipping our college mentors with the frame of perspective, language and trained observation skills are necessary in our program identifying more BIPOC gifted and talented students. Our BIPOC college Mentors allow SCDEP students to observe and learn from college students that share their identity, which creates positive images to replace any negative biases with positive truths. We also support our college students as they develop the necessary skills to become successful adults. We created the College Mentor Catalyst Program, that contains modules for our college mentors to participate in to build up their executive functioning skills in order to be successful adults, college students and mentors. Each module is based on an area that impacts the needs of the students.
