Funds are received throughout the year, but primarily in the summer and holiday season. The school supply funds are collected mainly in the summer months and dispersed to nonprofits in the community at the beginning of the school year (K-12). Larger numbers of donations are also received at the end of the year during the holiday season. The Board of Directors vets the nonprofits that these funds are distributed too, the fund total at year-end and distribution recipients are published in the The Seattle Times Newspaper. Annually members of the Board of Directors review agency solvency with an independent organization, perform site visits to benefiting organization and receive a report to donors for accountability of dollars used. This year, all funds received were disbursed to 13 different local nonprofits approved by the Fund For the Needy Board of Directors. In turn, 100% of the expense to run the Fund for the Needy is incurred by the Seattle Times Company, publisher of The Seattle Times Newspaper Form 990, Part I, Line 1 Needy members of the Seattle Community. Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 2 James A Blethen and Ryan Blethen are the sons of Frank A Blethen. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11b The tax return for the Fund for the Needy is prepared by the Tax Department personnel of the Seattle Times Company. It is then reviewed by the Director of the Finance Department and submitted to the President of the Fund for the Needy for review and signature. It is circulated to the other Directors and Officers for their review and comment. Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19 One of the goals for the Fund for the Needy is to ensure that all funds collected are distributed to the organizations selected by the Allocation Committee. Therefore the Fund for the Needy does not maintain a separate website or other public presence but relies on the resources of the Seattle Times Company.
