The park straddles the Gulf of Mexico and Estero Bay Aquatic Preserve, and protects five coastal habitats of marine and estuarine waters, including shoreline, mangroves and maritime hammock. In May, 2021 the park opened its long-awaited Welcome and Discovery Center, which houses state-of-the-art instructional facilities and an Exhibit Hall devoted to coastal eco-systems. The opening of this facility allowed FOLKs to pilot the Lovers Key Eco-Arts Summer Day Camp in the summer of 2021, as well as other environmental education programs. Over three -quarters of a million visitors come to the park each year. During the summer of 2022, thousands of visitors will be expected to tour the Welcome and Discovery Center.
