Over 300 athletes participated in health screenings for vision, dental, physicals, feet, hearing, and health promotions. Healthy Athletes screenings are held at state events for vision, hearing, dental, foot care, physical therapy, and health physicals at no cost to athletes or their families. These screenings educate athletes on healthy lifestyle choices and identify problems that may need additional follow-up. Additionally, over 266 athletes participated in our SOMIfit program providing 10 weeks of fitness activities mixed with educational material on health and wellness in person and 189 virtual participants. 504992 504992 Unified Champion Schools bring together students with and without intellectual disabilities through education, sports and youth leadership to provide them with the knowledge, attitudes and skill necessary to create and sustain school communities that promote acceptance, respect and human dignity. There are currently 342 SOMI Unified Champion Schools in the state of Michigan, back up this year with schools returning to more regular programming during the pandemic. SOMI continued to offer virtual programs in sports, fitness, social media campaigns, virtual learning resources and at home equipment to keep schools involved. Schools were able to return to in-person activities and interscholastic competition. Unified Sports provide youth the opportunity to train and play together as teammates. Students develop fitness and athletic skills while forming friendships, fostering respect for each other, and becoming leaders on and off the court. SOMI is organized into 36 geographical local, sub-accredited programs for athletes to train and compete in or near their home communities. Athletes can choose from 24 sports including alpine skiing, athletics, basketball, bocce, bowling, cross-country skiing, cycling, figure skating, golf, gymnastics artistic and rhythmic, horseshoes, poly hockey, power lifting, soccer, snowboarding, snowshoeing, softball, speed skating, swimming, volleyball, flag football, kayaking, and weightlifting. SOMI offers a Motor Activities Training Program designed for individuals with severe and profound disabilities, or who do not yet possess the physical or behavioral skills needed to participate in official Special Olympics sports. All programs are offered at no cost to athletes and their families. During 2021, COVID-19 impacted the ways SOMI delivered the program, using guidance from local and national authorities CDC, MDHSS and key metrics in the state and local regions throughout the year. For 2021, SOMI continued to expand upon strategies developed in 2022 to deliver the program in the safety of the athletes homes as well as in-person programming with appropriate protocols to ensure COVID-19 wasnt spread and participant risk was minimized. SOMI offered a combination of virtual and in-person events for 2021 State Summer Games with 122 in person athletes and 37 virtual athletes Fall Games with a total of 339 in person athletes along with 50 unified partners Basketball and bowling with 226 in person athletes and 33 unified partners. SOMI offered virtual and at home sports training and competition opportunities. These activities included weekly fit Friday workouts, at home equipment kits for Young Athletes, at home training programs for athletes and frequent virtual athlete social activities. We also revised and implemented our new Athlete Leadership Training curriculum, training more than 20 athletes in public speaking, career readiness, social media and leadership development training. We also started hosting athlete leadership lunch and learn programs that had athletes attending to learn many different topics. SOMI is a volunteer-driven organization with 14,468 volunteers throughout Michigan. Volunteers serve as coaches, chaperones, state and area event volunteers, Area Directors, and Area Management Team members. Area programs offer sports training and competition within a geographic location under the guidelines and direction of SOMI. Coaches are required to become certified in the sport they coach. SOMI provides coach training programs for all sports offered. SOMI publishes a quarterly electronic newsletter with more than 28,000 subscribers, maintains a website at www.somi.org, and engages in popular social media channels including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube.
