Despite the difficult decision to cancel in-person summer camp, our organization engaged 2,600 students and families with in-person and virtual education programs rooted in Reggio Emilia curriculum. First quarter 2020 school break camps, field trips, nature-themed birthday parties, and after school programs were complimented with Facebook live events, Grab N Go activity bags for home and off-site instruction, and the development of the Youth Conservation Leaders program for teens. Diversity in our educational offerings ensures our impact with children of diverse backgrounds and aspirations. 12010 Public Art: Art programs at Blue Heron Nature Preserve advanced our goal of providing free access for all to great art in a great setting. With seven nature-themed works by local and regional artists on display at the Blueway Trail, our six-week Art of Nature outdoor exhibition, curated by a yearly Artist in Residence, attracted art lovers across the Atlanta region. Two Blue Heron Indoor Gallery exhibits by local artists spurred additional public interest and visits for the Preserve. Trail enhancements, including the addition of railing and a major boardwalk, increased access, safety, and satisfaction of our thirty-acre greenspace during a pivotal time for the Atlanta region. New visitors near and far discovered the beauty and marvel of the Preserve: boosting their physical and mental health along the Blueway Trail, supplementing educational opportunities at home and school with onsite and virtual programs, and absorbing the power of nature with our Art of Nature exhibit. We are dedicated to build communities and connections to nature with trail-blazing initiatives. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: Partnerships: Partnerships with nonprofit organizations, civic groups, and corporations helped to sustain our innovative education, conservation, and arts initiatives at Blue Heron Nature Preserve in 2020. We collaborated with Georgia Audubon and the Amphibian Foundation to educate children about wildlife at the Preserve. Social distancing volunteer cleanups allowed corporate employees and civic groups to experience the beauty of Blue Heron and the joy of their beautification work along the Blueway Trail. Conservation partnerships with local and national entities contributed to the implementation of two ground-breaking projects at Blue Heron: development of a beaver dam project and funding for the Eidson Mill Trailhead. Blue Heron is enthused to enlighten children and adults about these projects and our environmentally treasured Preserve in 2021 and for years to come.
