Our staff called neighbors every month as well, to check in with them (many are elderly) and see what issues they were facing personally and in their neighborhoods. Despite COVID-19 forcing us to meet virtually, we had excellent attendance with nearly all members attending 75% of meetings. Additionally, through a partnership with VCU, we engaged 5 Southside youth in a participatory research action project called YEER (Youth Empowerment Eviction Research) over a 9 month period. We will continue this project in 2021 and are bringing young people on board as members of our new youth voice team (a subcommittee of the RVA Thrives Steering Committee). Due to the efforts of our three Latina Community Advocates who have now been on staff for one full year, we saw the percentage of neighbors participating with RVA Thrives who identify as Latinx increase from approximately 10% at the start of 2020 to 47% by the end of the year! Our new Greening Community Conversations and Housing Working Group meetings now always have a Spanish breakout session. In 2020, we expanded our training to include a new Racial Equity in Community Engagement training and started offering equity assessments and organizational coaching through a contract with the Partnership for Housing Affordability. We trained approximately 140 people from 20 different institutions in 2020. Feedback from training participants has been overwhelmingly positive, both in the training evaluations and in follow-up conversations. Participants in our community engagement training said they learned new concepts and language, enjoyed engaging small-group activities and began to think about their organizations intent vs impact. Participants in the Racial Equity series said it laid the foundation for learning and talking about racial equity in their organizations, and there was a good balance between learning and discussion. The majority said they would recommend our trainings to others.
