I neglected to file IRS Form 8868 to request an automatic extension of time to file an exempt organization return. I (Mark Bee) became the new treasurer of this society in July 2018. The previous treasurer prepared and filed our 2018 taxes and provided considerable help to me in preparing and filing our 2019 taxes. Tax year 2020 is the first time I am filing the society's taxes on my own in my role as the new treasurer. As a volunteer officer of the society, the learning curve for preparing and filing tax forms for a 501c(3) organization has proven steeper than I anticipated. I realized my oversight regarding Form 8868 in mid-October 2020, approximately one week before filing this Form 990. Upon realizing my error, I made every effort to file this Form 990 as quickly as possible. I cannot point to any one documented cause for my oversight (e.g., fire, serious illness, difficulty obtaining records). However, as the care provider for both an elderly parent and an unvaccinated 5 year old, and as the faculty advisor responsible for several graduate students whose careers have been upended by COVID, I can attest that the additional distractions and stress caused by the ongoing pandemic constitute a disturbance that contributed to my oversight in my role as the treasurer. I have implemented corrective measures to ensure I do not make this same mistake in the future, including the addition of several timely reminders and notifications in Google Calendar to help make sure I file either Form 990 or Form 8868 by the appropriate deadline in May of each year going forward.
