We ended the year with 165,000 Facebook fans and 17,000 Twitter followers. 241556 Breaking Down Barriers: Our community outreach program, whose goal is to create science learning in communities around the country, had to make major adjustments to its projects due to the pandemic. Once it became apparent that in-person activities were not going to be allowed, the program focused instead on its work with a cohort of graduate student outreach fellows. The fellows focused on three areas of inquiry: museum exhibits that focus on evolution, specifically genetics and evolution; the improvement of evolution and climate change education in rural museums; and the impact of an online role-playing game called Climate Change Summit that prompts participants to make decisions as townspeople on how best to spend $100,000 to mitigate climate change in their communities. The research papers generated by this work will be published in peer-reviewed journals in mid- to late-2021. 158477 Supporting Teachers: Our teacher support program, in response to the worldwide pandemic, turned its attention to developing online resources for teachers. The program published two lesson sets focused on the Nature of Science and plans to publish three more. The program also began laying the groundwork for the publication of a revised set of Climate Change lessons and a set of lessons on Evolution by enlisting the aid of NCSE's Teacher Ambassadors in development of the lessons. All three sets of lessons are aimed at helping students recognize and correct common misconceptions about the three topic areas. Programmatically, that meant pivoting from face-to-face activities such as in-person teacher professional development and community outreach to online opportunities. Those opportunities took the form of the development of a new set of free-to-download lessons for science teachers focused on the Nature of Science and a set of resources to help students improve their understanding of the science related to the novel coronavirus. We also worked extensively with graduate student fellows to conduct research on science outreach, much of which is scheduled to be published in mid- to late-2021. Most notably, we engaged in two collaborative research efforts. We worked with the Texas Freedom Network Education Fund to develop a "report card" on the treatment of climate change in the science standards that guide what is taught in science classrooms in each state. The "Making the Grade?" report garnered a great deal of publicity from regional media, particularly in states that received failing grades. We also published initial results of a research effort on evolution and climate change education with Penn State University that began in 2019. The results helped to inform NCSE's efforts in defending and promoting the teaching of climate change and evolution, two socially - though not scientifically - controversial areas of science. Form 990, Part VI, Line 11b: Form 990 Review Process The 990's are reviewed by both the Executive Director, and the Treasurer prior to filing. They review the electronic form. The Director of operations submits it to them with comments to explain information and allows for questions and edits prior to filing. Form 990, Part VI, Line 12c: Explanation of Monitoring and Enforcement of Conflicts The board secretary has the directors sign a conflict of interest statement each year. We haven't had a conflict so there has never been any discussion on prohbitions. Form 990, Part VI, Line 15a: Compensation Review & Approval Process - CEO, Top Management Research was done by contacting other similar organization in the Bay area to discuss ED salaries. A independent survey was also used, that compares salary data from other non-profits. This process last occurred in 2018. The organization makes its completed 990 form available upon request and uploads it onto, GuideStar, on the NCSE website and Charity Navigator websites.
