In 2020, the Mission served over 50,000 families due to the impact of COVID-19 and others who are living in poverty or difficult times due to job loss, death, divorce, domestic violence, eviction, fire, flooding or other natural disaster. Of the families served, 97% are categorized as "extremely poor", 30% are elderly or disabled, some are homeless and some are grandparents or other family members raising children. These services include monthly home delivery of food and other assistance for senior and disabled persons, the "Wheels and a Way to Work" program which provides assistance with gas cards and vehicle repairs so that adult students can get to classes and job training and newly employed persons have a way to get to work, and the Safe Haven Ministry which helps families who live in unsafe environments by assisting with home repairs, yard clean up, wheelchair ramps, utilities, and more. The County provided the Mission with lists of pre-screened applicants, criteria for determination of any payments to be made, documentation requirements, related training, guidance and reviews of case files and payments made. The Mission was required to maintain a separate cash account for each grant, and disbursed payments from these accounts for the eligible amounts. Accordingly, the Mission provided services to the County under these grant agreements, acting as an agent of the County and a trustee of the grant funds. These funds were accounted for as "agency" transactions, whereby the cash balances, representing "unspent funds" are reflected in these financial statements as restricted cash and a liability to Montgomery County agencies for grant program funds held as trustee and agent. The Mission received approximately $731,494 in funds, disbursed approximately $213,756 to applicants and in payment of administrative expenses, returned $415,578 of unspent funds to the County, and had approximately $102,160 of unspent funds remaining at year end held in a checking account. In these financial statements, none of the funds received are included in contributions and support and payments to applicants are not included in the Mission's expenses. The Mission received "administrative fees" in connection with these services of approximately $4,546. Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 8b The Mission had no committees in the current year.
