WISE went through many adjustments and made significant strides in developing as an organization. Just like all companies, WISE had to pivot suddenly. In May, the Chair of WISE, Peggy Davies, was approached to become the President of another organization. Jen Linke, formerly the 1st Vice Chair, stepped into the role of Chair effective July 1, 2020. In early 2020, the Board had initiated a project with a consultant called WISE 2022 and Beyond. This was done with the knowledge that Jen would be the Chair starting in 2022. This project was perfectly timed though, so as Jen took on new responsibilities, the Board was identifying the organizations strengths and opportunities. Through the project, it was determined that WISE is known by its members as a safe space to share difficult conversations and talk about their professional development. The opportunities offered through webinars is of high value and importance to our members. The largest opportunity identified by the Board was to develop more content, education and information specifically focused on diversity. With that direction, an initiative was launched to find a 3rd party company to bring more education to our community around diversity, equity and inclusion. This was announced at our virtual annual meeting in November 2020.The most significant result from the WISE 2022 & Beyond project was that the mission and vision statements were updated to more accurately reflect where the organization is and where it wants to go. The new Mission Statement is WISE cultivates diverse collaboration through our programs and provides leadership to empower our industrys continued success. The new Vision Statement is We believe that diversity will drive store brand industry growth. We boldly envision a future where a dynamic and inclusive workforce will be the industrys core strength. Sarah engaged the audience on why diversity matters and gave specific examples as how companies can do more. The WISE session was prominently promoted by the conference host.In early 2020, WISE introduced a new networking option for members called WISE Connect Online. These were small group video chats, moderated by a WISE member, to allow for in-depth conversations on a specific topic. Throughout 2020, there were 12 virtual networking events with 68 participants. November 12: Given that in-person events were cancelled throughout our industry, WISE hosted the 8th Annual Meeting in a virtual format. In partnership with Store Brands Magazine, under Top Women in Store Brands program, the WISE Annual Meeting honored 8 ladies. The event featured keynote speaker, Katie Sowers, who was the 2nd female NFL coach in the league and the first openly gay coach. Every attendee was offered the e-book by Shellye Archambeau called, Unapologetically Ambitious. A portion of the event was underwritten by several WISE partners and manufacturing companies in the store brand industry.Digital changes were an important part of our 2020 updates. First, the website domain was changed from womaninstorebrands.com to WISEdiversity.com. This change was completed to put a stronger emphasis on diversity. In addition to this, WISE updated the WISE Resource Center (WRC). This partner member benefit provides a new interface to access past webinar recordings, a speaker database and suggested business resources. 2020 Mentor Circle ProgramThe 2020 program included a co-ed circle which brought the program to a total of six circles with 36 participants.Through an after-action survey with the Mentees and Mentor circle leads the main thread was that the topics were thought-provoking, very educational and inspiring. The open discussions, experience and knowledge sharing took place was without judgement or repercussions. Talking with others from different backgrounds, across genders, and across ages was enlightening and encouraging. When an issue or situation where advice was required, it was easy to bring it up to the group. Quality guidance from both the mentor lead and from the others in the circle was received.
