We do this by rewarding students with brand-new bicycles and helmets after achieving defined academic goals, teaching the important lesson that hard work and dedication pay off. We believe this places children on the path to a brighter future. As soon as the wheels start turning, impressive things happen!The overarching goal of CYCLE is to see every student in the Greater Houston area achieve grade-level reading or above by the end of the third grade, putting them on the path to success and empowering them to reach their full potential in school and life. In addition, research has shown that achieving grade-level literacy by fourth grade is a key determinant of future academic success.Bicycles to date: During 2020, CYCLE awarded more than 689 new bicycles and helmets to at-risk children, bringing its cumulative total of bicycles and helmets to 172,851 bicycles since the program's inception in 2000. CYCLE purchased the bicycles and helmets awarded in 2020 in a prior year. Therefore, the cost of the 2020 awards is reflected in previous years. With the help of over 250 volunteers in 2020, CYCLE is able to achieve its mission.The Pandemic caused by the Coronavirus (COVID-19) resulted in significant disruptions of our fundraising, bicycle purchases, bicycle building, and bicycle delivery during 2020. Because the Pandemic risked life and health, we decided not to assemble crowds for any of these activities out of fear of transmitting COVID 19 to our donors, volunteers, and the teachers and students in the schools we serve.Our Board of Directors concluded that given the circumstances, it was in the best interests of all concerned that we significantly scale down CYCLEs activities to a level supportable by funds already available, with only modest expectations of new donations. We decided not to order any new bicycles, and we limited our promises to schools and students to the number of bicycles we already had in our warehouse.This resulted in limited donations, no bicycle purchases, and a limited number of bicycles built and delivered to students under the earn-a-bike program.In 2021, we are resuming our fundraising activities and plan to purchase a limited number of new bicycles for the Fall earn-a-bike program. If fundraising meets our expectations, we plan to order additional bicycles and conduct an earn-a-bike program during the Spring of 2022.We sincerely appreciate all of our supporters who donated in the face of what we knew would be a limited program for children in a very challenging year. Through their generosity, we were able to sustain the viability of CYCLE for the long run. For many years, the financial statements of CYCLE have been independently audited by a certified public accountant named Ken Skrabanek.Mr. Skrabanek was engaged in the audit of CYCLEs 2020 financial statements when he died suddenly after a long illness. The Board of Directors extends our heartfelt condolences to Mr. Skrabaneks family.Accordingly, no independent audit has been completed on CYCLEs 2020 financial statements. CYCLEs Board of Directors is engaged in searching for a new independent public accountant to audit CYCLEs 2021 financial statements.
