We are a voice, advocate, facilitator and catalyst for businesses and residents. false false 69441 46482 In 2019, our organization was selected as the outreach organization for the N/NE Community Development Initiative established by Prosper Portland and guided by ann advisory committee to develop an action plan to guide the investment of funds for the Interstate CorridorUrban Renewal Area for economic & redevelopment purposes. In March of 2020 the World fell still, sideline by a global pandemic. Our priorities soon shifted from a short term wait it out ideology to a more dire and serious focus on fighting for life, equity & the economic survival of our small business community. As we started to recognize the long term ramifications of the pandemic, the knee to the neck of George Floyd lit the fuse of a secondary disaster that would test the business community further. Peaceful protests, riots culminating in human and property destruction & racial confrontations in all levels of society across our country altered the rhythms of how we lived, worked and played. External factors aside, our business community needed intervention, innovation & resource connections. For our part, the Soul District Business Association was able to provide support through: PPE: Connecting with the City of Portland Emergency Management Services & distributed over 30,000 masks & 200 gallons of hand sanitizers to low-income, minority owned businesses and organizations; Distributed an additional 400 hand sewn masks donated by the Portlands First United Methodist Church; Outreach to businesses in our district that experienced property destruction due to racial unrest, & connected them with grants to help offset costs of clean up for graffiti, broken glass, fire, etc.Technical Support: Assisted 65 small Black owned businesses with filling out financial relief applications with funding partners; Communication: Assisted 100 small business owners with free business education, marketing, & promotion of their products and services through online platforms taught & led by business professionals in order to assist our small businesses in navigating complex issues around Covid, business basics & adjusting business stay at home orders. Advocacy, Outreach, Resources & Collaboration: Networking (connecting businesses to resources, forging collaboration, increasing width & depth of economic impact for our business owners to contract with each others services); Business Navigation (acting as coordinators for businesses that are being impacted by bigger economy/government actions); Check Up; Legalize for Business Legitimacy; Building Business Confidence. Branding: Worked with Instrument to complete a Power Point pitch deck to tell the story of how we will Brand the Soul District as a unique cultural district that is a tribute to Black economic, artistic & cultural demonstrations of expression & an asset to the neighborhood; Submitted Metro placemaking grant to support the establishment of a Wikipedia page. 56273 500 Fiscal Sponsorship for the Hill Block Project Working Group: Our organization serves as the Fiscal Sponsor for this association which as been tasked to assist with the development on specific vacant land with the intent to honor Portlands African American Community and support community housing and economics. 22992 Green Light Black Lives Matter: The PDX Black Rose Podcast & Video Training Series is a youth (ages 16-24) technology training program that prioritizes Black voices & images whose relevant subject matters continue to be overshadowed on the airwaves & soundwaves by the priorities of predominately white culture with deep pockets & large megaphones. The PDXBRPVS is a program where we openly talk about race in fully animated participation with our Black youth & community; where we can let our guard down & not have to worry about being judged or disrespected; where we share our resources, our lived experiences, our knowledge & our hearts; where being a Black Rose, in the City of Roses, is a symbol of inspiration that ushers in a new era of hope; where we can grow the perceptions of Capability, Significance & Influence that live within us all.Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we were limited in how we could move forward with our original intended implementation plan. The following chronological outlines some of our success and some of our barriers due to the pandemic: We identified 10 youth to participate in the PDXBlack Rose Podcast & Video Training Program of which 4 youth completed the application process; We created an online curriculum for the program & accounts for youth so we could train online; We launched a series of podcast on our channels that featured Black Newsmakers who discussed their challenges.
