<Desc>KW in Schools:From its inception, KnowledgeWorks has focused on creating personalized learning environments that engage K-12 students and help each individual thrive in college, career and civic life. Six years ago, KnowledgeWorks entered the national conversation about personalized, competency-based learning (PCBL) behind a concentration of thoughtful policy briefs focused on state and federal policy reform, aligned advocacy, and partner engagement. This body of work, combined with over 16 years of on-the-ground experience in innovative school design, implementation, continuous improvement and collective impact, quickly established KnowledgeWorks as a thought leader and trusted resource for policymakers and other organizations launching statewide and local PCBL initiatives. These leaders are now turning to KnowledgeWorks for instructional, assessment, and community engagement supports to inspire PCBL systemic implementation within local, regional, and state cohorts. As a result, in FY2019 KnowledgeWorks continued its support of policy and practice in the PCBL ecosystem. The organization implemented its professional development and technical assistance approaches, tools, strategies, and capacity development in approximately 19 districts (also known as learning communities) across the country. In addition, KnowledgeWorks began a partnership with the North Dakota Department of Public instruction to implement and scale PCBL in the state, consistent with NDDPIs Choice Ready vision. South Carolina and Arizona have also joined NDDPI in scaling PCBL statewide. By the close of FY2019, the KW in Schools team was working on systemic design and implementation projects within Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Michigan, Ohio, South Carolina, Minnesota, Maine, Indiana, New York, and North Dakota. These local, regional, and state-wide cohorts supported PCBL learning of nearly 82,000 learners within 163 schools. These impactful numbers suggest strong demand for personalized learning and PCBL services in FY2019 and beyond.</Desc>

<Desc>StrivePartnership: During FY2019, StrivePartnership continued to advance its work under the following systems-level strategies. Early Learning Alignment - creation of two collaborative action networks among early learning and service providers in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. These networks allow low-income families with children prenatal to kindergarten to be connected to high-quality health, development and social-emotional support services to accelerate improvement in learning and developmental outcomes. This strategy has impacted 19,069 children. Middle Grade Math - Working with Cincinnati Public Schools (CPS) administrators, principals, teachers and students, StrivePartnership is leveraging its experience in continuous quality improvement and its partnership with Cincinnati Childrens Hospital Medical Center to establish a comprehensive Network for School Improvement to improve 8th-grade math beginning in 10 CPS schools. K-12 / Postsecondary Data Agreements - StrivePartnership has facilitated a working group of institutional research staff from 12 regional colleges and universities to negotiate data-sharing agreements with CPS that define an extensive set of student data. Dashboards were created to help assess the effectiveness of initiatives targeted to improve college persistent rates, especially for Black students who fail to complete at a higher rate. The number of students impacted is 5,437. Ohio Achievement Goal Stopped-out Student Ground Game - StrivePartnership, in collaboration with Learn 2 Earn Dayton and Summit Education Initiative, worked to equip 6 Ohio cradle-to-career organizations to lead local strategies and state policy efforts to re-enroll residents who stopped-out of college before obtaining a degree. Talent Hub Career Pathway Initiative - StrivePartnership continued to deliver work as a designated Talent Hub supported by a 3-year grant from the Lumina Foundation that is focused on helping 1,400 local Black, Latinx and low-income single mothers pursue a post-secondary credential.</Desc>

<Desc>Policy & Advocacy: In FY2019, the Policy and Advocacy Team created three resources for the field: two resources for the College in High School Alliance and the State Policy Framework for Personalized Learning, including an anchor paper, a guide for policymakers navigating the future of learning, a guide to developing shared ownership, eight one-pager FAQ documents in collaboration with the communications team and a self-assessment for state policymakers. The Policy and Advocacy Team was also recognized by partners across the field through the opportunity to speak or present at five events and by writing or being quoted in six articles or newsletters. The team hosted an event with the Michigan Competency Consortium and provided supports around personalized learning plans for Washington, D.C.s EdCore. Additionally, the Policy and Advocacy Team saw multiple instances of adoption of their work during the year. KnowledgeWorks provided support for New Hampshires application for the Innovative Assessment Pilot which was approved by the United States Department of Education. The State Policy Framework for Personalized Learning and its accompanying resources informed elements of the Utah Department of Educations new strategic plan. Similarly, North Dakota and South Carolina formally signed on as a partner in the next phases of the statewide transformation work. KnowledgeWorks also informed a number of state-level bills in Indiana, Minnesota, Montana and South Carolina.</Desc>

<Desc>Strategic Foresight:KnowledgeWorks continued to exercise national thought leadership around the future of learning through publications, partnerships, and stakeholder engagements. It published a set of three strategy guides on shaping the future of readiness in northeast, southeast, and southwest Ohio along with a toolkit, Building Support for Student-Centered Learning: A Toolkit for Shaping the Future. In addition, KnowledgeWorks published its fifth forecast on the future of learning, Navigating the Future of Learning; a set of videos previewing the drivers of change from that forecast; an executive summary of the forecast; a series of discussion guides designed to help various education audiences engage with it; and a related strategy guide, Navigating the Future of Learning: A Strategy Guide, which was informed by two workshops that KnowledgeWorks hosted. The organizations strategic foresight team continued to give presentations and to design and facilitate workshops based on these and earlier publications. Venues included the Thrival Festival along with the conferences of Grantmakers for Education, the Simon Youth Foundation, AdvancED Latin American, the National School Boards Association, and the Consortium for School Networking. KnowledgeWorks strategic foresight team also collaborated with partners to create a future simulation exploring the possibility of algorithm-driven hiring. In addition, KnowledgeWorks published a variety of articles related to the future of learning on other organizations platforms and, with its partner Capita, secured funding to complete most of the work on a forecast on the futures of young children and their families. A 2017 publication, The Future of Learning: Redefining Readiness from the Inside Out, won a 2018 Association of Professional Futurists Most Significant Futures Work award for analyzing a significant future issue.</Desc>

<ExplanationTxt>The Foundation has analyzed tax positions taken for filing with the IRS and all state jurisdictions where it operates. The Foundation believes that income tax filing positions will be sustained upon examination and does not anticipate any adjustments that would result in a material adverse effect on the Foundations financial position, statement of activities, or cash flows. Accordingly, the Foundation has not recorded any reserves or related accruals for interest and penalties for uncertain income tax positions at June 30, 2019 and 2018. In the event interest and penalties accrued on unrecognized tax benefits, the Foundation would recognize such amounts as a component of income tax expense.</ExplanationTxt>
