Under this program NEI is setting the standard for healthy, durable, resilient, energy and water efficient affordable housing, providing direct services and education and training to owners, developers, architects, contractors and financers of this housing to implement features and construction practices that directly benefit the low income residents of this housing, reduce operating costs, improve health outcomes and mitigate risk in operations. NEI trains residents to understand and take advantage of the benefits of green housing, and disseminates the lessons learned to others in the field. Greening Existing Affordable Housing and Community Buildings NEI works to assist owners and operators in understanding how their affordable housing and community buildings are performing and making changes to reduce energy and water use, improve health outcomes for residents, and make buildings more durable and less costly to operate. NEI organizes and trains owners and operators in best and emerging practices, provides direct services in energy auditing, efficient design, and project management, helps to arrange financing for projects and financing programs that benefit many projects, and measure and verifies the results of its efforts. NEI trains owners and operating staff to manage their operations in more environmentally and socially sound ways. NEI analyzes the results of its efforts and disseminate these findings across the country. Consulting Services NEI provides consulting services to non-profit and for-profit clients in the area of sustainable development, green building, and integrated design. JPB - In 2013 NEI received a grant from JPB Foundation, to set up exploratory meetings with other companies similar to NEI for future collaboration. In 2013, NEI and one of those companies, Elevate Energy, were awarded a two-year $6 million grant from JPB to set up a National Delivery Network of energy efficiency implementers that provide energy efficiency services to the affordable multifamily market. In the fall of 2015, another two-year $6 million grant was awarded to New Ecology and Elevate to continue the work that was started in previous years and to further assist in the development of the national network. In the fall of 2017, a three-year $2.1 million grant was awarded to NEI to be used to support National Approach to Scaling Efficiency in Affordable Housing. Additionally, for 2019 the JPB Foundation granted a one-time additional grant of $250,000 to be used for Community Engagement. MA CEC Monitoring & Optimization Pilot In August 2016 NEI received a $600k grant from the Massachusetts Clean Energy Technology Center to deploy non-proprietary HVAC remote monitoring and optimization technology in 100 representative, low-income multifamily buildings to identify and correct operational inefficiencies and reduce energy costs. In August 2018 NEI received an extension for an additional $200k for repair, replacement, and further optimization of the original 100 sites and Machine Learning. In the Spring of 2019, NEI was awarded a grant from the Department of Energy (DOE), Building for America, that is to be used to further develop Machine Learning. During the negotiation period it was requested that MA CEC allow the balance of their 2018 grant be used as a cost share for the DOE grant and MACEC agreed.Department of Energy (DOE) in the Spring of 2019 final negotiations of the $850,000 Building America grant were complete. The performance period of the grant is May 1, 2019 through October 31, 2020. The purpose of this grant is to enhance data acquisition systems and develop tools to automate the optimization analyses and fault detection process of NEIs remote monitoring system via Machine Learning. Working with grant sub-recipient, Fraunhofer, Machine Learning will significantly reduce implementation costs of remote monitoring systems for boiler systems while lowering energy costs. Further, the lower cost of remote monitoring will allow for scalability resulting in increased energy savings for more multi-family and community buildings. MA Department of Energy Resources (MADOER) In September 2019 NEI received a $700,000 grant from MADOER under the Innovate Energy Efficiency Grant Program (InnovatEE). The purpose of the grant is to demonstrate innovations in the areas of energy technology and program design. NEI will demonstrate the energy savings potential, viability, and scalability of its remote monitoring optimization (ReMo) service across the state of Massachusetts. NEIs client, Action for Boston Community Development, also received a grant through the MADOERs InnovatEE program for their Low Income Energy Efficiency Program that they have contracted with us to fulfill.
