Pate includes the present fair value of future retirement payments, to be paid over time as an annuity, not a lump sum. As part of recruitment to the role of CEO of St. Luke's Health System, Ltd., Dr. Pate received a supplemental executive retirement plan during his tenure, which vested during the tax year reported. At the vesting date, the fair value of his future benefits is considered reportable wages to him for income tax purposes. Cash payments of the retirement benefit is deferred until his retirement, at which time the benefits will be paid out as an annuity.
