The advocacy work promoted the organization's mission by building awareness, educating and persuading external stakeholders on policy matters of interest to SCHS, its sponsored entities and the larger community. As a Catholic health system with diverse ministries including hospitals, grant making foundations, elder care and community outreach organizations, SCHS was called to speak out on behalf of poor and vulnerable persons, including working to ensure that society increases access including physical and behavioral health services for everyone while protecting the dignity of life. Living this mission, this call asked SCHS to be active at the local, state and federal levels where health and other domestic policy decisions are made. SCHS is the sole member of two licensed acute care hospitals: St. Vincent Charity Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio and Mercy Medical Center in Canton, Ohio. In 2019 SCHS hospitals collectively provided 100,900 days of inpatient care and responded to 93,600 emergency room visits and 602,000 outpatient visits. SCHS is the sole member of two elder care facilities: Regina Health Center (RHC) and Light of Hearts Villa (LOHV). RHC is a skilled nursing and assisted living facility primarily serving aging vowed religious men and women in the Diocese of Cleveland and Youngstown. In 2019 RHC provided 48,800 days of care to residents. LOHV is an assisted/independent living facility which also provides respite and memory care. SCHS is the sole member of three grant making foundations in Ohio and South Carolina. Each foundation endeavors to understand the root cause of poverty, nurture the growth of healthy communities, emphasize youth and family, and measure the outcomes of these efforts. Based on the needs of the communities they serve, the foundations' strategic initiatives focus on low income housing, early childhood education fatherhood in the family, homelessness and religious communities. Collectively, the foundations awarded over 176 grants, totaling over $7.77 million in 2019. Other health and human services and education-related organizations within SCHS include: Joseph's Home, a residential care center providing medical respite to homeless men in Cleveland; Early Childhood Resource Center, which provides resources and training for people working within childcare in Canton, Ohio; Healthy Learners, a state-wide organization providing health care resources for children in low income families across South Carolina; and South Carolina Center for Fathers and Families, a state-wide organization supporting initiative to reengage fathers in the lives of their children. Overall, in 2019 inspired by a devotion to healing and a steadfast and deep commitment to our communities, SCHS and its family of ministries provided over $55 in community benefit. This number includes $40 million in charity care and unpaid costs of Medicaid and $15 million in other community health services, including health professional education, community building activates and outreach to medically disadvantaged members of the community(based of the Catholic Health Association model).
