The mission of Los Olivos CIS is carried out primarily through program grants to the Center for Interchange and Solidarity (CIS) in El Salvador. 0 0 270829 262458 0 Youth Formation and Scholarship Programs: Provides education to potential community leaders who would not be able to study without help and at the same time build their awareness of their role as agents for making changes for social justice. The CIS worked with 18 local Salvadoran scholarship committees and 20 sister organizations as well as individual donors to raise funds for 175 youth to go to the university and 266 to go to grade school and high school in 2018. Of those students 15 graduated with university degrees and 86 from high school in 2018. The CIS has also started a Gender Scholarship Fund which provides 3 scholarships to Trans women and 3 to women who have been wrongly jailed for miscarriages and have won back their freedom, so they can work to overcome marginalization and stigmatization and have access to dignified jobs. Scholarship students carried out literacy programs, organized clean water and environmental workshops, tutored younger students, taught computers and English, and participated in activities to build a culture of peace and non-violence. CIS promoters organized workshops on Vocational orientation and life project, study techniques, and sexual and reproductive health. The CIS organized a three-day retreat in La Palma for 100 students focused on environment, water and global warming. Students prepared an evaluation of environmental risks in their community prior to the retreat and at the retreat developed a workplan for their communities. 132371 115924 899 Civil rights, democratic development, emergency aid, and advocacy programs: Los Olivos CIS organizes Community Network for Cooperation and Solidarity made up of 25 community organizations. This year focused on analysis and workshops on gender, human rights, mental health, environment, migration and election reforms. This included a course on art and mental health for 240 youth and mothers in communities at risk. CIS also coordinated a six-month school for 23 young leaders on the environment. The participants learned about water, climate change, global warming, waste management and did a diagnosis and action plan in their own communities. CIS also accompanied young people who were victims of police violence to make reports at the Human Rights Procurator's Office, including accompanying surviving family members of a young scholarship student and 5 members of his family who were allegedly killed by the special police according to witnesses and neighbors. School supplies and a playground set were also donated in Tonacatepeque to support young people in high risk areas. With CIS support electricity was installed in 65 homes in Romero Community. CIS Clean Water program strengthened 11 local water committees and cooperated with local schools and health promoters to broaden the impact and education around clean water. CIS trained and distributed water filters to 392 families and 4 Clean Water for the World Purification Units in local schools. CIS carried out 36 training classes and reviewed 28 existing purification systems. 85992 53104 50629 Education delegations and language and cultural exchange: 24 international and Salvadoran volunteers trained by the CIS to teach English as a second language taught classes to 160 local community members for 4 nine-week sessions. The volunteers received orientation about El Salvador and the empowerment work of Los Olivos CIS. CIS continues coordinating with the University of El Salvador to provide Salvadoran students majoring in English with training and an opportunity to practice their profession and fulfill their 500 hours of social work requirement by teaching at the CIS. 85 international participants received Spanish instruction and cultural orientation from local native speakers in El Salvador and on-line. The CIS employs 9 teachers to give Spanish classes online. CIS hosted 16 delegations with 124 participants in 2018. Delegations included 6 sister communities visiting scholarship programs; one university groups that helped install water purification units; 2 Peace Health Brigades; two student groups focused on public health and an environmental delegation partnered with EcoViva. One sister delegation was able to provide a donation for an emergency brain tumor operation for one of the scholarship students. CIS visit women in prison falsely accused of abortion and helped get out their stories to the public which resulted in the release of two women from prison. The CIS director accompanied a delegation to Rome for the Canonization of Saint Romero, who inspired the movement for social and economic justice in El Salvador. CIS coordinated its 12th International Mission of Election Observers with 50 observers and 5 long term volunteers. The team also translated the instruction manual of the Supreme Elections Tribunal, providing an invaluable resource for all international observer missions to be able to carry out more in-depth observations and significant reports and recommendations for strengthening free and fair elections. 26180 24162 1883 Small business and women's development programs. Promoting women's active participation in their community, building self-esteem, training and developing income generating businesses to improve the quality of life of women and their families. Ongoing support and development were provided to 20 women's businesses, directly benefitting 148 women and their families. Our biggest achievements included successful organic cultivation of the Jiquilite Plant and processing indigo dye; the launching of an artisanal ice cream business, the process of business plans with Jiquiliete Women in Romero Community, Sausage a la Vista in Ilobasco and Leslie's Bakery in Comasagua. Seed money was provided to Creative Hands Workshop in Estanzuelas for sewing and embroidery supplies to be able to expand their market; and the Coconut candy business on the Isla Espiritu Santo expanded their market.
