First Colony Foundation was asked by the trust and by local governments to conduct additional investigations, including the first excavation of the Native American village of Mettaquem. The property was deeded to the State of North Carolina at the end of 2018. In 2019 we will be surveying the shorelines of Salmon Creek and the Chowan River to search for additional evidence of Elizabethan occupation there.----------------------------------- History Weekend Symposium, Manteo, NC:Additional expenses to cover sponsorship of 2-day conference. Thirteen expert presentations included historical background of Sir Walter Raleighs Roanoke settlements in the 1580s, discoveries in the 20th and 21st Centuries, and analysis of the research.---------------------------------------- Sir Walter Raleigh Symposium:Four speakers presented observations on Sir Walter Raleigh and his impact on the new world. Event took place at the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, and the weekend included tours of the site of Raleighs 16-Century settlement. A new exhibit on Sir Walter Raleigh was dedicated at the nearby Outer Banks History Center.
