<ExplanationTxt>LOBBYING ACTIVITIES: A description of the MLAs lobbying efforts in 201718 follows. Paula M. Krebs served on the board of the National Humanities Alliance (NHA), and Stephen Kidd, the executive director of the NHA, did the direct lobbying for the NHA. As in the past, the NHA board met to discuss the NHAs administration, staffing, budget, and support services. The NHA board formulated plans for educating NHA members and members of Congress about the importance and value of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and of scholarship in the humanistic disciplines. Kidd implemented the actions the board recommended. Humanities Advocacy Day is an activity of the NHA. The NHAs 2018 annual meeting and Humanities Advocacy Day were held on 1213 March in Washington, DC. Over the two-day period, 161 advocates participated in a range of activities, including advocacy training, an NEH grants workshop, a humanities grants overview session, panel presentations, a keynote luncheon, policy briefings, a Capitol Hill reception, and visits to congressional offices to request funding for the NEH and federally funded language programs. The MLA supported the event by paying transportation expenses for a member from a state whose legislators represented key votes in support of humanities funding. MLA member Jessica Winston, professor of English and chair of the Department of History at Idaho State University, flew to Washington to meet with staffers from the offices of Senator Mike Crapo (R-ID) and Representatives Mike Simpson (R-ID) and Ral Labrador (R-ID). In addition, she and other advocates met with Senator James Risch (R-ID). Paula M. Krebs met with staffers from the offices of Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) and Representative David Cicilline (D-RI) and accompanied the Pennsylvania team on its visits. In 201718, the MLA was a member of the Coalition for International Education (CIE), an organization made up of more than thirty national higher education associations. The CIE informs policy makers, education and private-sector officials, and the media about national needs in international and foreign language education and focuses on promoting and supporting Title VI and Fulbright-Hays programs. In December 2017, the MLA signed on to the CIEs letter to the Senate and House leadership and the Senate and House Appropriations Committees and their Subcommittees on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies urging them to adopt of the Senate bills provisions for International Education and Foreign Language Studies, specifically, the $65.1 million appropriation for HEA-Title VI and the $7.1 million appropriation for Fulbright-Hays programs. The CIE also expressed thanks that the comparable House bill provided $65.1 million for Title VI programs, but was unhappy that the House bill eliminated funding for the Fulbright-Hays programs. In November 2017, the MLA sent letters to Senators Orrin Hatch, Mitch McConnell, and Charles Schumer urging them to recognize the devastating effect that the proposed elimination of individual tax deductions for college tuition, interest, and other educational expenses would have on the higher education system at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The same letters were sent to Representatives Paul Ryan, Kevin McCarthy, and Nancy Pelosi. In addition, Dennis Looney, director of programs the MLAs Office of Programs of and the Association of Departments of Foreign Languages, and Paula M. Krebs participated in CIE teleconferences concerning funding for international education and other Department of Education programs. The MLA was also affiliated with the Joint National Committee for Languages (JNCL) in 201718. The JNCL represents more than 300,000 professionals and has over 100 members, including national, regional, and state organizations encompassing most areas of the K16 language field. The JNCL holds its Language Advocacy Day and annual Delegate Assembly meeting in Washington, DC, where members promote public awareness of language issues. Looney acted as the MLAs representative to the JNCL and attended the JNCLs annual Delegate Assembly meeting in February 2018.</ExplanationTxt>

<ExplanationTxt>Grant Monitoring: The winners of the Modern Language Association's awards for scholarly publications are chosen by committees appointed by the MLA's Committee on Honors and Awards, which itself is appointed by the Executive Council. Only members of the MLA may be appointed to committees. The awards committees are made up of established scholars; the members of each committee that decide a specialized award are specialists in the field or fields covered by the award. Prizes are awarded to authors and publishers of print or digital scholarly books and projects, including editions, anthologies, and translations. Works that meet the published criteria for eligibility are submitted to the MLA by authors and publishers and are then forwarded to the relevant awards committees. Members of the committees review all eligible entries, identify the strongest contenders, and confer among themselves until they agree on a winner. The MLA awards $400 stipends to support travel to its annual convention. The stipends are available to graduate students, non-tenure-track faculty members, unemployed members, and regular and life members residing outside the United States and Canada. The MLA issues checks after reviewing and approving travel-expense forms, with receipts attached.</ExplanationTxt>

<ExplanationTxt>ORGANIZATION'S MISSION: The Modern Language Association of America ("MLA") is a nonprofit organization devoted to encouraging the study and teaching of modern languages and literatures. Founded in 1883, the MLA today serves its 25,332 members through publications, programs, and meetings. It works to advance the interests of the field in the higher education community and among the general public. The MLA was incorporated on April 5, 1900, by the general assembly of Maryland for "educational, scientific, and social object and purposes, and more specifically for the promotion of the academic and scientific study of the English, German, French, Spanish, Italian and other so-called modern languages and literatures." The MLA constitution states that the object of the MLA shall be to promote study, criticism, and research in the more and less commonly taught modern languages and their literatures and to further the common interests of teachers of these subjects.</ExplanationTxt>

<ExplanationTxt>BIBLIOGRAPHY AND PUBLICATIONS: The MLA serves teachers, students, and researchers through its publication program, which includes PMLA, a widely cited scholarly journal, as well as reference works and book series that meet the pedagogical and professional needs of those who study languages and literatures. The MLA International Bibliography is a cornerstone of the MLAs research publications; it is available online and is a unique reference tool for those doing research in the modern languages and literatures, linguistics, rhetoric and composition, pedagogy, and folklore. More than 2,000 educational institutions subscribe to the bibliography. PMLA is one of the oldest and most respected journals in the field. Between September 2017 and August 2018, 256 essays were submitted by MLA members for possible publication in PMLA. In addition to scholarly articles, each year PMLA publishes the program for the MLA Annual Convention. MLA members receive a subscription to PMLA, and approximately 1,500 libraries purchased a print or electronic subscription to the 2018 volumes. For over forty years, the MLA Job Information List (JIL) has facilitated the employment process in the field by listing postsecondary faculty vacancies and making the information available to job seekers whose goal is to teach English or foreign languages and literatures at the postsecondary level. The JIL is published as a digital database of departmental job notices that job seekers can search by field or language, by geographic region, by key words or phrases in job descriptions, and by rank. Access to the JIL database is available free of charge. The MLA compiles and publishes a number of other reference works for humanities teachers, students, and scholars. The MLA Handbook is widely used by undergraduate and graduate students in colleges and universities and, increasingly, by high school students. During the 201718 fiscal year, the MLA sold 64,140 copies of the eighth edition in paperback, which was released in April 2016. The e-book format of the MLA Handbook, which was released in 2017, sold 3,875 copies. The Approaches to Teaching World Literature series, which currently comprises 155 volumes, serves teachers by providing guidance about presenting various literary works to students; 2,712 copies of these books were sold in fiscal year 201718. The Texts and Translations series, affordably priced for classroom use, publishes both the original text and the English translation of literary works. The 65 volumes in the series sold a total of 4,029 copies in fiscal year 201718. The World Literature Reimagined series, which contains three titles focused on literary history, interpretation, and pedagogy in teaching world literatures, sold a total of 15 copies in fiscal year 201718. The series Teaching Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, which concentrates on examining the ways different languages, literatures, and cultures intersect, contains four titles and sold 17 copies. Another MLA book series, Research and Scholarship in Composition, contains six volumes and sold a total of 17 copies in fiscal year 201718. The Options for Teaching series addresses pedagogical and professional topics of interest to teachers of language and literature. In fiscal year 201718, the 42 volumes in the Options for Teaching series sold a total of 928 copies. We now offer a sixth of our titles in e-book formats, which are distributed by NetRead to vendors such as Amazon and Barnes and Noble. During fiscal year 201718, sales of our e-book titles averaged $1,645 per month.</ExplanationTxt>

<ExplanationTxt>CONVENTION AND SPECIAL MEETINGS: The principal meeting organized by the MLA is the MLA Annual Convention. Long a forum for intellectual exchange, this annual gathering brings members together to report on their scholarship, to discuss new information about teaching and other professional issues, and to interview candidates for positions. By providing a forum for scholarly exchange, the convention strengthens work in the field. The 2018 meeting attracted 6,040 registrants. In 1997, the MLA established the Professional Education Assistance Fund to promote the study of modern languages and literatures by providing aid to graduate students to attend the convention; in 2006, it was expanded to provide aid to non-tenure-track faculty members and unemployed members. The fund provided 187 cash awards to qualified students and 49 cash awards to eligible non-tenure-track faculty members and unemployed members to defray their expenses in traveling to and attending the 2018 MLA convention. The MLA also houses the Association of Departments of English (ADE) and the Association of Departments of Foreign Languages (ADFL). The summer seminars sponsored by these organizations bring together administrators of college and university departments of English and foreign languages. The seminars encourage the discussion of common problems and the development of consensus about good practice in writing, literature, and language teaching. At the 2018 ADE and ADFL seminars, 287 participants from nearly 200 institutions attended.</ExplanationTxt>

In the course of this project, which began December 1, 2015, and will conclude August 31, 2019, the MLA will undertake the following activities. Annual reports are provided to the Mellon Foundation. 1. Support three partners in creating doctoral education initiatives to promote career diversity. 2. Coordinate three Connected Academics Institutes at partner organizations, to facilitate collaboration on developing strategies and resources. 3. Organize three yearlong Connected Academics proseminars in New York City. 4. Provide training and resources to help transform doctoral education and increase mentoring for job seekers. 5. Expand the MLAs 201314 PhD Employment Study. The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation awarded the MLA a grant of $310,000 to conduct an intensive planning project in support of Humanities Commons. The National Endowment for the Humanities awarded the MLA a grant of $300,000 for a project entitled Humanities CORE, in collaboration with the Columbia University Libraries, connecting an underserved disciplinary community with repository infrastructure to support access to, preservation of, and impact created by the scholarship. This project began September 1, 2016, and will conclude on August 31, 2019. A final report will be delivered on November 30, 2019. In September 2016, with the support of a chairmans grant for $30,000 from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the MLA began data collection for the twenty-fourth and twenty-fifth censuses in the series of language enrollment censuses that the association has conducted since 1958. The preliminary report on the findings will be published in March 2018; a full report will be published in spring 2019. The Teagle Foundation awarded the MLA a grant of $45,000 for a project entitled MLA Summer Institute of Teaching, Reading and Writing. The grant began April 2018 and will conclude on January 15, 2019, including a final narrative and financial report.</ExplanationTxt>

<ExplanationTxt>OTHER PROGRAM EXPENSES: Research and Programs: The MLA works to improve English and foreign language programs in colleges and universities, through support for the Association of Departments of English (ADE) and the Association of Departments of Foreign Languages (ADFL). Membership in these organizations is institutional: ADE had 533 member departments; ADFL had 650 member departments. The purpose of these organizations is to strengthen the administration of college and university English and foreign language departments. Toward this purpose, the ADE and ADFL publish two professional journals for its member departments, the ADE Bulletin and the ADFL Bulletin, which carry articles on standards in the field; guidelines for departmental programs; and statistical information about enrollments, curriculum developments, ongoing and new academic programs, and the status of faculty members. The ADE and ADFL Web sites make available policy statements, guidelines, reports on data collected in surveys, summer seminar information and registration, and moderated discussion lists. Some features are available only to members: the complete archive of the ADE Bulletin and the ADFL Bulletin; online voting in Executive Committee elections; the ADE and ADFL directories; a list of doctoral programs in English and comparative literature, American studies, and womens studies; and moderated discussion lists for ADE- and ADFL-member department chairs. Data Analysis: In fiscal year 201718 the MLA reported on the number of jobs that English and foreign language departments announced in the Job Information List (JIL) and published an analysis of how departments indexed and categorized the positions they submitted to the JIL over the eighteen years 200001 to 201718. These and similar reports are available on the MLA Web site, for use by members and by departments or divisions of English, foreign languages, comparative literature, or humanities. Special Projects: Located on the MLA Web site, the MLA Language Map is an interactive tool free to the public that uses data from the Census 2000 and the 2005 and 2010 American Community Surveys to show the locations and numbers of speakers of thirty languages (including English) commonly spoken at home in every county and state in the United States. The Language Map includes data from a special tabulation from the United States Census commissioned by the MLA in 2004. The MLA Language Map also shows the institutions of higher education where a language other than English is being taught, using the fall 2016 enrollment figures from the MLAs census of enrollments in languages other than English. Restricted Funds Awards: Scholarly achievement is recognized through the prizes the MLA awards at the annual convention. Of the eighteen prizes awarded in 201718, nine were supported by restricted funds, the others by general funds. The eleven funded prizes were the Katherine Singer Kovacs Prize for an outstanding book in English or Spanish in the field of Latin American or Spanish literatures and cultures; the Morton N. Cohen Award for a Distinguished Edition of Letters; the Lois Roth Award for a translation of a literary work; the Matei Calinescu Prize for twentieth- and twenty-first-century thought; the Aldo and Jeanne Scaglione Prize for Comparative Literary Studies, for an outstanding scholarly work in the field involving at least two literatures; the Aldo and Jeanne Scaglione Prize for French and Francophone Studies; the Aldo and Jeanne Scaglione Prize for a Translation of a Literary Work; the Aldo and Jeanne Scaglione Prize for Studies in Slavic Languages and Literatures; the Aldo and Jeanne Scaglione Prize for Italian Studies; the Aldo and Jeanne Scaglione Prize for a Translation of a Scholarly Study of Literature; and the Aldo and Jeanne Scaglione Publication Award for a Manuscript in Italian Literary Studies.</ExplanationTxt>
