We accomplish that mission by operating a low-cost spay/neuter clinic that provides professional sterilization surgery for pets of low-income residents for low-cost (free to those who cannot afford anything) to prevent those pets from reproducing and to keep them healthy. UCAN performed 12,991 surgeries in 2018: 8,002 cat surgeries and 4,989 dog surgeries. The organization has now performed over 120,000 surgeries since opening in April 2007. These surgeries have prevented hundreds of thousands of unwanted cats and dogs from being born into abuse, neglect and ultimately facing euthanasia in overcrowded shelters. General explanation attachment Additional Program Accomplishments:The positive impact of these surgeries is being seen in almost all of the county shelters in our service area, as the dog and cat intake rates are decreasing and therefore the euthanasia rates are decreasing. To keep pets healthy and out of shelters, UCAN also provides at low-cost microchips(770 provided for free in 2018), rabies, and other recommended vaccinations, parasite prevention, and treatment for worms and other minor conditions. The clinic serves 24 counties in 3 states with most of the clients coming from the 15 counties within a 50 mile radius of Cincinnati. To ensure everyone in its service area has access to its affordable services, UCAN provides free transports from locations in 12 of the surrounding counties that it serves.
