Part X, Line 2: FIN 48 Note from Audited Financial Statements North American Spine Society and the National Association of Spine Specialists are organizations described in Sections 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(6), respectively, of the Internal Revenue Code and were granted exemptions from federal income taxes by the Internal Revenue Service. The tax-exempt purposes of the Organizations and the nature in which they operate are described in Note 1 under "Nature of Organization". Management's assertion is that there are no uncertain tax positions and the Organizations continue to operate in compliance with their tax-exempt purposes. However, the Organizations are subject to income tax on their unrelated business income after related expenses. North American Spine Society does sell advertising in its journals and opportunities at the annual meeting as well as its annual conference registration listing of participants which is considered unrelated to its tax-exempt purpose. Based on net income from these activities, the Society incurred no amounts in unrelated business income taxes for the year ended December 31, 2024. The National Association of Spine Specialists performs certain lobbying activities. Expenditures for lobbying activities are subject to a 35% proxy tax unless membership dues and assessments clearly identify the estimated portion of non-deductible membership dues which represent lobbying expense. For 2024, the Association estimated and identified to its members the portion of its dues relating to non-deductible lobbying expenses. As such, no provision for proxy tax was necessary for 2024. The Society has adopted the requirements for accounting for uncertain tax positions and management has determined that the Society was not required to record a liability related to uncertain tax positions as of December 31, 2024.
