Along with the usual erosion repair, projects in 2017 on the east side of the island included rehabilitation of 0.8 miles of the Seaside Path, including 12 new culverts, 12 checks, and 120 square feet of wall. On the west side, 0.6 miles of the Valley Trail were revamped, including 1,750 feet of raised causeway, 9 culverts, 107 steps, 20 checks, and 240 square feet of stone wall. Seventeen wooden bridges were replaced in the park, along with 1,140 feet of bog bridges, mostly at Canon Brook, Jordan Pond, and Eagle Lake. Retaining walls were re-built at Beech Cliffs and Echo Lake, and historic stone steps were re-set or repaired with new drainage features on the A. Murray Young and Canon Brook trails. Pedestrian safety in the Sand Beach area was also improved when washed out portions of the Satterlee Trail were relocated to a new sidewalk along the Park Loop Road. Three memorial plaques and monuments along the trails were cleaned and restored, and park staff continued yearly trainings for youth and volunteer safety awareness. 312146 209131 The Island Explorer is a fare-free, seasonal, propane-powered bus system that runs through Acadia National Park and its surrounding gateway communities. Since its first day of operation in 1999, over 7.1 million visitors have ridden the bus, over 2.7 million private vehicle trips have been eliminated, reducing smog causing pollutants by an estimated 38.2 tons and greenhouse gas emissions by over 25,000 tons. Friends of Acadia has been involved with the bus systems since its inception, helping to secure and grant over $3 million in funds from L.L. Bean and others to enable the system to grow. Friends of Acadia's grant supports the operating costs of 34 buses on Mount Desert Island, and two on the Schoodic peninsula. 328922 220371 The Carriage Road maintenance grant makes possible the salaries of six Acadia National Park workers who perform regular maintenance of the park's 44 miles of historic carriage roads. In 2017, the workers repaired winter storm damage, cut dead trees (timed to relate to the breeding period of the federally threatened Northern long-eared bats), recovered and reset dislodged coping stones, unclogged culverts, cleared vistas on seven prominent sections of the carriage roads, replaced three intersection signs, laid down 200 cubic yards of new surface material, and rock raked, dragged smooth, and rolled the entire system at the beginning and end of the season. The arborist, carriage road crew, and volunteers continued to repair the back drains that direct water from the landscape surrounding the carriage roads to the culverts. This program uses thousands of volunteer hours from FOA's volunteer program, and the Acadia Youth Conservation Corps students who are ANP employees supported by an FOA endowment. 1747081 1013563 Additionally, Friends of Acadia contributes to a variety of community outreach events such as Take Pride in Acadia, National Trails Day, and Earth Day Roadside Clean-up.
