In 2016, our legal action prompted the BLM to drop plans for dangerous and invasive surgical sterilization experiments on wild mares. 130970 Establishing the Model and Protecting Historic Herds We have implemented the largest wild horse management program in the world for the historic wild horses of the Virginia Range in northern Nevada. This program utilizes a birth control vaccine to reduce population growth and decrease population numbers humanely over time. We train local groups to implement this humane model for wild horse management to other Western herds, providing expertise and support and empowering them in their fight to save and humanely manage historic herds in their areas. 108979 Preserving History at the Federal & State Levels:We have made and continue to make significant strides in cultivating bipartisan awareness and support on Capitol Hill for Americas wild horses. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: Saving Lives:Under our groundbreaking Cooperative Agreement with the State of Nevada, we purchased 34 captured Virginia Range wild horses to prevent them from being sold for slaughter and relocated two bands of these horses to California sanctuaries, allowing these families to stay together. We also provided financial assistance to support the rescue of just under 50 horses from failed sanctuaries where they were in danger of being sold at a slaughter auction.
