These grants challenge APD to establish unconventional methods to police in metro Atlanta in an effort to drive down crime to historic lows, as well as to build a model city and police department through cutting-edge crime fighting strategies while sanctioning support and leadership from the business community. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: Atlanta Repeat Offenders Commission:The Atlanta Repeat Offenders Commission was established to address the City of Atlanta bureaucrats concern of the alarming number of repeat offenders in Fulton County. Currently, repeat offenders are committing crimesoften times violent offensesrepeatedly and are being released back into the community to re-offend. While crime in Atlanta continues to decrease each year, there is still a serious threat to public safety. The Atlanta Police Foundation (APF) believes that being proactive and working collectively with the business community to address the repeat offender issue will have a significant impact on public safety in Atlanta. APFS BEST PRACTICES RESEARCH SHOWS THAT BREAKTHROUGHS IN ANALYZING INTELLIGENCE DATA ARE ACHIEVED THROUGH STRONG PUBLIC/PRIVATE PARTNERSHIPS. INNOVATIONS ARE DERIVED FROM COLLABORATIVE, MULTI-DISCIPLINARY APPROACHES. AS THE PACE OF TECHNOLOGY INCREASES, THE ATLANTA POLICE DEPARTMENT (APD) BENEFITS FROM A CENTER OF EXCELLENCE WHERE TECHNOLOGY CAN BE TESTED AND HONED. AT END, THE TIC WILL POSITION THE CITY OF ATLANTA IN ITS RIGHTFUL PLACE AS THE REGIONS LEADER IN DEVELOPING TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATIONS THAT CAN IMPROVE THE DELIVERY OF EFFECTIVE PUBLIC SAFETY SERVICES. IN 2016, THE TIC EMPLOYED 21 INTERNS WHOSE ACCOMPLISHEMENTS INCLUDE 1) ATTRITION ANALYSIS OF APDS SWORN OFFICERS; 2) PRODUCTION OF OVER 240 CRIME AND/OR CAMERA MAPS; 3) TESTING OF MANY NEW TECHNOLOGIES, INCLUDING VIDEO ANALYSIS, SOCIAL MEDIA ANALYSIS, AND A NEXT-GENERATION 911 CALL-TAKING SYSTEM; AND, 4) BUILDING OF TWO WEB PORTALS TO COLLECT AND MANAGE DATA FOR APF PROGRAMS. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 9: Atlanta Police Leadership Institute (APLI): Atlanta Police Leadership Institute (APLI) is a comprehensive leadership development program for police officers. APLIs programmatic goal is to identify and develop the best leaders possible at the Atlanta Police Department (APD) and to foster a culture of leadership, respect, and accountability within APD and throughout the community. Each training level or Tier is specially designed for its participants and focuses on topics such as: communication skills, conflict management, decision making, budgeting, technology, media relations, and political leadership. To date, more than 1,000 police officers have participated in the program within the past few years. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 10: Officer Scholarships: The Atlanta Police Department (APD) believes that education enriches the lives, skills, and abilities of its employees. To support this, the Atlanta Police Foundation (APF) has created a scholarship program to assist with an officers desire to further his or her education. Each year, APF reimburses APD officers up to $3,000. Course work must be in a job-related field and students must maintain a B average or higher to qualify for reimbursement. Scholarship recipients agree to remain on the force three (3) years after receiving funding which is designed to reduce attrition within APD. To date 1,059 scholarship have been awarded totaling $1,095,480 in scholarship funds paid out. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 11: Officer Life Insurance: In 2005, the Atlanta Police Foundation (APF) partnered with Peachtree Presbyterian Church to provide a $100,000 Life Insurance Policy for all sworn Atlanta Police Department (APD) officers. The insurance policy is one way the community is showing its support to APD officers who Answer the call to keep our communities safe by putting themselves in harms way each and every day for our community. In 2016, the Foundation expanded its policy to coverage to the City of Atlanta Fire and Rescue Personnel as well.
