Along with the usual erosion repair, projects in 2016 on the east side of the island included work on the Ocean Path with over 500 feet of experimental surfacing, new bridges on the Stratheden Path, over 700 feet of bogwalk around Jordan Pond, finishing touches on Deer Brook and erosion control in Seal Harbor. On the west side, projects included work on the West Ridge Trail on the shore of Long Pond, Acadia Mountain's western approaches, repairing a scar on Flying Mountain, and great efforts on the Beech Cliffs ladder trail, and the Beech Cliffs loop. Park staff continued yearly trainings for youth and volunteer safety awareness. 283011 199126 The Island Explorer is a fare-free, seasonal, propane-powered bus system that runs through Acadia National Park and its surrounding gateway communities. Since its first day of operation in 1999, almost 6.6 million visitors have ridden the bus, approximately 2.5 million private vehicle trips have been eliminated, reducing smog causing pollutants by an estimated 35.2 tons and greenhouse gas emissions by over 23,000 tons. Friends of Acadia has been involved with the bus systems since its inception, helping to secure and grant over $3 million in funds from L.L. Bean and others to enable the system to grow. Friends of Acadia's grant supports the operating costs of 34 buses on Mount Desert Island, and two on the Schoodic peninsula. 358159 252000 The Carriage Road maintenance grant makes possible the salaries of six Acadia National Park workers who perform regular maintenance of the park's 44 miles of historic carriage roads. In 2016, the workers repaired winter storm damage, cut dead trees (timed to relate to the breeding period of the endangered long-eared bats), recovered and reset dislodged coping stones, started training a new arborist, installed new intersection signs, and started repairs on "back drains". These are drains installed off-road into the landscape to direct water to the culverts. This program uses thousands of volunteer hours from FOA's volunteer program, and the Acadia Youth Conservation Corps students who are Acadia National Park employees supported by an FOA endowment. 2096554 1107492 5830 Additionally, Friends of Acadia contributes to a variety of community outreach events such as Take Pride in Acadia, National Trails Day, and Earth Day Roadside Clean-up.
