Through the use of individual and corporate donor advised funds, scholarships, legacy funds, and others, CFNJ granted out more than $52 million in 2016. Of this amount, about half supported nonprofits in New Jersey, including 2,700 grants in all twenty-one counties. The balance was disbursed as 3,060 grants supporting nonprofits outside of New Jersey. CFNJ currently stewards more than $410 million in charitable assets, making grants to nonprofit organizations in line with the advice of active fundholders or philanthropic goals of those who leave bequests. 13952219 The Community Foundation of New Jersey (CFNJ) sponsors several special projects each year, often initiated to address an urgent or region-specific need. In 2016, CFNJ launched the Field Trip New Jersey Fund, aimed at taking students from low-income communities out of familiar surroundings to connect classroom learning with real-life experiences. CFNJ also sponsored initiatives to stem the tide of New Jersey's heroin and opioid epidemic (including providing critical support for the toll-free addiction hotline) and an initiative to expand micro-lending and support women entrepreneurs in Newark, New Jersey. CFNJ continued its support of an initiative to reform New Jersey's juvenile justice system to ensure it is truly rehabilitative, as well as a partnership to provide legal representative for undocumented and unaccompanied immigrant youth, and a city-wide, year-long celebration of Newark's 350th anniversary.
