Houston Volunteer Lawyers is also an IRS-sponsored Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic and, in 2012, Houston Volunteer Lawyers launched the first medical-legal partnership in the Houston area with the world-renowned Texas Children's Hospital. In 2015, HVL provided in-person, one-on-one legal advice to 5,715 applicants at no charge. 983 of their matters were referred to pro bono lawyers for long-term representation which represents a placement rate of 97 percent of accepted cases. Over 2,000 of the persons helped by HVL in 2015 were for United States veterans or spouses of deceased veterans. In addition, Houston Volunteer Lawyers assisted 6,383 self-represented litigants at its Courthouse Booth in 2015. Overall, volunteer attorneys worked on 2,057 active pro bono cases (over half of which began in a prior year) and volunteered at over 80 legal advice clinics, donating 15,829 hours through Houston Volunteer Lawyers in 2015. 264 of those attorneys had never volunteered with Houston Volunteer Lawyers before.
