In 2015 the Corps hosted 10 crews working in the states of Vt, NH, MA, and CT completing priority conservation projects. Projects include riparian buffer restoration, invasive exotic plant control, wildlife habitat improvement and trail building and maintenance projects. Sixty seven youlth and 19 young adult leaders completed 19,203 hours of conservation work and 3,144 hours of environmental education and employment training. Project highlights included the completion of the Middle Mountain Trail, pulling over 14,000 pounds of water chestnut, treating 8,000 square feet of Japanese knotweed within the Connecticut River watershed and planting 1915 trees and shrubs and installing 680 feet of willow fascines. 120018 115246 Exciting progress was made at our own 1,500 acre Spitzer Demonstration Forest in East Charleston and Morgan, both in stewardship activities and efforts to bring the educational values of the site to a broader audience. Among other activities, our staff continued a multi-year invasive common reed removal project, comparing the effectiveness of various non-chemical treatment methods, and conducted a timber harvest in a Norway spruce plantation demonstrating ecologically minded forestry and the benefits of low impact logging equipment. New trail improvements were also made, including bridge repairs and a trailhead informational kiosk.Sustainable forestry education was very active on the site in 2015, with a number of demostration workshops, several offerings of the widely acclaimed Game of Logging chainsaw trainings, a spring landowner training in conjunction with Vermont Coverts, and a 2nd annual visit by the Paul Smiths College forestry class. FSI staff also taught forestry lessons at Lyndon State College and served on the Vermont Tree Farm program committee and a statewide conservation planning committee.After a lengthy evaluation process, the Spitzer forest was honored in 2015 with recognition as the newest Forest Guild Model Forest by the Forest Stewards Guild - a national organization of forestry professionals. The mission of the Model Forest program is to recognize places, people, and relationships that foster sustainable forest management and demonstrate successful silviculture. The Spitzer Forest joins 21 other model forests around the country with this distinction.Our consulting services for landowners continued to grow in 2015, including the new service of small scale timber harvests using a low impact log forwarding trailer acquired by NorthWoods through a 2014 Working Lands Enterprise Grant. Three landowners took advantage of this service in 2015 and reported high satisfaction with the results. Overall client numbers increased by 15%, and were very diverse - emcompassing municipalities, schools (Lyndon Institute), farmers, year-round residents, and absentee landowners. Specific consulting services provided were 10 forest management plans, 7 UVA maps, several property walks, and management work on 12 properties. Management activities ranged from invasive plant control to forest stand improvement work and wildlife habitant improvement, to low impact timber harvests. In 2015, we continued our long term efforts to improve water quality in northeastern Vermont throught stream and lakeshore tree plantings and through survival studies at past planting sites. Under the Trees for Streams and Lakeshore Buffering programs, we planted 1,644 native trees and shrubs at 10 sites in the Lake Memphremagog and upper Connecticut River watersheds. Through a new partnership with the Nature Conservance (TNC), we also planted an additional 650 trees (including Dutch elm disease-resistent saplings) at three sites from Barton to Canaan. Late in the year, Northwoods was awarded an Ecosystem Restoration Program grant to continue and coordinate riparian buffer planting again in 2016 and 2017. Other science projects involved invasive plant control and monitoring efforts in the upper Connecticut River watershed and hazard mitigation plans for several towns in the region.For a third year, Northwoods presented the George Buzzell Stewardship Award, which honors an individual committed to sustainable forestland management in the Northeast Kingdom, and who has worked to ensure the long term resiliency and productivity of our forests. The 2015 Buzzell award recipient was David McMath, a long time consulting forester from hardwick who manages the large Atlas lands ownership (Vermont Land Truct and TNC) in northern Vermont. 102051 123196 In 2015, Northwoods Stewardship Center Education Staff facilitated 251 programs for 5,312 students. These programs take place here on our 1,500 acre campus in East Charleston, at schools in Caledonia, Exxes, and Orleans Counties in Vermont land Coos County of Northern New Hampshire, as well as some of our favorite destinations in the Northeast Kingdom. Programs focused on a wide range of topics, from survival skills, outdoor exploration, sustainable forestry, environmental literacy, water quality, team and leadership development, scientific inquiry, recreational skill building, and more. NorthWoods also offered 9 weeks of camp for 131 campers from ages 6 - 14, partnering with local outdoor organizations. Themes of camp included outdoor recreation, primitive skills, hands-on connection with the natural world, and introduction to the scientific research process. In addition, community members participated in outreach programs, located here on our East Charleston campus and throughout the community.
