In a residential setting, a blind person is taught adaptive daily living skills, cane travel, braille, keyboarding and other computer skills, assistive technology, mobile phone use, sensory training, fencing as an aid to orientation, balance and mobility, as well as exercise and yoga, counseling, woodworking to gain non-visual skills and confidence and, pre-vocational skills. Educational Service Programs: Expenses $1,386,653 Revenue $1,529,639. We provide services to children who have low vision or are blind and attend public, private or charter schools in their community. Our teachers work with local educators in providing instruction in braille, adaptive technology training, learning media assessments, alternative materials, and overall access to the curriculum. In addition, summer and weekend programs are provided to these children to help them develop blindness skills, socialize with others, and further their independence. In fiscal year 2013-2014, 329 school-aged children received 17,073 hours of specialized instruction. 636106 0 680000 Massachusetts Instructional Materials Library: Under contract with the State Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DOE), the Center manages the state mandated service making accessible books and materials for school-aged children who are visually impaired. Computer Training: Computer training is provided to persons who are blind to learn assistive technologies and computer applications so they can be employed, attend school and engage independently in the community. Persons who are blind or have low-vision use special software that enlarges the screen, speech output programs, braille displays, and other useful devices. Instruction is provided in the Center's Technology Center and on the job. Technology services were provided to approximately 66 individuals who received 75 weeks of instruction during fiscal 2014. 2. Outdoor Enrichment: The Center organizes a variety of recreational activities for persons who are blind including hiking, sailing, skiing, tandem biking, and canoeing. The Center's sailing team competed in the 2013 world championships in Japan.
