Within the 1480 acre Spitzer Demonstration Forest, new demonstration forestry work was completed on over 50 acres, including songbird habit management, timber stand improvement, and invasive plant control. Other site inprovements included roadwork, creation of 3 new trailhead access areas, and 1.25 miles of new public recreational trails - one of these being the Gardner Path Living Histroy Trail, with interpretive signage. Wildlife research was conducted on the site at the demonstration forestry areas through collaborations with Lyndon state College and the University of Vermont. Forestry educational resources were also developed, such as lesson plans and website improvements. Consulting staff assisted 24 landowners owning 4148 acres; completing 5 forest management plans, administering two timber harvests, and completing other forest management work (invasive plant control, wildlife habitat improvement, apple tree release, property recommendation walks, and timber stand improvement). Science projects included planting of over 1500 trees on 5.3 acres to restore riparian areas in the Lake Memphremagog watershed, emerald ash borer early detection efforts, roadside restoration plantings for the Town of Westmore, and a Stream Geomorphic Assessment of Leach Stream in Canaan, Vermont. Programs were focused on environmental education, renewable energy, teambuilding, survival skills, outdoor recreation, and hands-on science including watershed studies, forestry, and wildlife. Staff also provided 7 weeks of summer camp opportunities for 100 campers ages 6 - 13. Themes of the camps reflect those explored through the school year, with an special focus on connecting with nature, practicing camp-craft and survival skills, and gaining a sense of place through outdoor recreation. In addition, 700 community members, primarily adults, participated in 60 outreach programs. Projects included wildlife management and habitant improvement work in six U.S. Fish and Wildlife Refuges as well as trail maintenace and development work on public lands in northeastern Vermont (Middle Mountain, Mount Pisgah, Beaver Pond, and Lake Willoughby Shore Trail). Out Professional Trail Crew provided an additional 22 weeks of seasonal employment, totaling over 4000 hours of work to improve river habitants and recreation resources in northern Vermont and New Hampshire.
