We hold clinics (i.e., legal consultations) for beneficiaries of SSDI and/or SSI who have mental and/or developmental disabilities and are having post-entitlement / eligibility issues due to SSDI Work Activity Reviews and SSI redeterminations based on income, and resulting overpayments. We have filed an administrative class action suit against the SSA for failing to provide reasonable accommodations to complainants based on psychiatric disabilities. SSA denied this suit on appeal and therefore PWDF can sue the SSA in US District Court. PWDF is looking for a large law firm for litigation support for this case. 101597 In 2013, PWDF held a free 3-hour public seminar entitled "Overcoming Barriers to Physical Health Care Access People with Mental Disabilities Have Shorter Life Spans." The impetus for this seminar was the extensive research showing that, as a group, persons with severe mental illness (SMI) have a 13-25 year shorter life expectancy than that of the general population, mainly due to physical illness. One of the factors of the shorter life span is the inequalities in the provision of physical health care services for people with SMI. Subsequent to this seminar, PWDF began forming an interdisciplinary task force comprising medical-legal, mental health care, and primary care (medical and dental) professionals to develop protocols and procedures for health care providers that will prevent inequalities in access to and provision of physical health care services for people with SMI. 60957 PWDF continues its public awareness and education activities through outreach events, guest speaking, an e-newsletter, public informational seminars and training sessions. In September 2013 we held an educational seminar about access to physical health care services for people with mental impairments. PWDF continues to market and distribute our training videos. We provide training on the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and SSDI/SSI for people with mental/developmental disabilities nationwide and in local counties.
