The four food regional food banks receive funding to supplement their food distribution operations. Employees make annual site visits to ensure that the regional food banks are operating as intended. Agencies that are allowed to make food purchases or receive food or commodities under the governmental programs are reviewed annually to ensure eligibility. Site visits are performed on a random basis to ensure that the agency is in compliance with food storage requirements and to see that the food is being used appropriately. The total amount of food inventory donated during the year ended June 30, 2013 was 22,759,864 pounds of donated product and 8,545,487 pounds of USDA Commodities. Significant accomplishment FORM 990, PART I, Summary, Most Significant Accomplishment Since our incorporation in August, 1982, Community FoodBank of New Jersey has faced - and risen to - many challenges. But on October 29, 2012, we faced an unprecedented natural disaster. Hurricane Sandy left widespread misery and destruction in its wake, wiping out much of the coastline, cutting power to millions, and damaging or destroying homes and businesses across New Jersey. Many of those who lost the most had the least to begin with. We are proud to be able to say our CFBNJ community pulled together to deliver help where and when it was needed most. As the storm was taking aim, CFBNJ employees and volunteers prepared more than 60,000 meals for the Salvation Army and Red Cross, assembled 75,000 sandwiches for people who had no power or heat for days, and our Southern Branch raced to deliver 10,000 meals to shelters in Atlantic City. In the first month after Sandy struck, CFBNJ distributed 5.2 million pounds of food and groceries - our highest one-month total ever. Desperate pleas for help poured in from struggling people who had nothing left - no food, no clothes, no money, no home. We worked day after day without a break, as trucks and vans loaded with relief supplies rolled in from across the country. In the first two weeks after the storm, we handled 200 trucks filled with donations. Our warehouse staff, many dealing with Sandy-related hardships of their own, worked tirelessly. In the months since Sandy, as the floodwaters receded to reveal a state in crisis, it has taken all of our energy and determination to try to meet the need. It has also taken an extraordinary amount of our financial resources, but we, and most importantly those we serve, have also been on the receiving end of a tremendous amount of generosity. Just as New Jersey and all of the northeast are forging ahead and rebuilding, so are we, working diligently and remaining ready to rise to whatever challenges lie ahead.
