The College works with a number of school, community, and youth organizations through the following programs and events: ACPHS Academy is an afterschool enrichment program that promotes STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education for at-risk students in Albany elementary and middle schools. The program seeks to instill good study habits, increase confidence and self-respect, and ultimately help students realize that college can be part of their futures. As of fall 2014, there were 130 students spanning grades 3-9 enrolled in the program. The Summer Enrichment Program, which runs for six weeks each summer, is for area high school students who demonstrate interest in a career in the sciences. Each week of the program consists of three days of research with an ACPHS faculty member, one day of instructional activities, and one day to tour regional pharmaceutical companies. Relay for Life, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, brings together hundreds of participants from the College and local community to raise money for cancer. The College consistently finishes among the top fundraising schools in the country among those with comparable enrollments. The College's annual Health and Wellness Expo provides flu shots, health screenings, and information on subjects such as high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. Whether any distributions are made from endowment funds is decided annually by the Board of Trustees in conjunction with the College's annual operating budget. Accordingly, over the long term, the College expects the current spending policy to allow its endowment to grow at a rate that exceeds the rate of inflation. This is consistent with the College's objective to maintain the purchasing power of the endowment assets held in perpetuity or for a specified term as well as to provide additional real growth through new gifts and investment return. The current investment policy has a spending policy of 4% per annum, based on a historical three-year moving average of donor restricted endowment fund market value on June 30. No distributions will be made which will result in the market value of the donor restricted endowment to fall below the original corpus.
