This organization serves youth and families largely from a disadvantaged background with a focus on providing youth participants with the skills necessary to succeed in their schools, homes, and communities. We focus on building youth leaders by exposing them to a curriculum of leadership development sessions and activities in addition to providing them with educational exploration activities on local college campuses. Our participants work with a volunteer staff of mentors made up of college students and community members to work through our curriculum and to build a peer network of like minded youth leaders. During the year 2024 the SHIELD Mentor Program celebrated 16 years of serving our local community. During the year we started our robotics program and prepared for our inaugural FIRST Robotics Competition season as a member of FIRST NC.
