Oscar nominated actor Willem Dafoe made his Public Theater debut in the world premiere of IDIOT SAVANT, written and directed by legendary avant-garde theater pioneer, Richard Foreman. Playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney returned to The Public with the world premiere of the trilogy of THE BROTHER/SISTER PLAYS Part 1 and 2 presented over two performances with marathon weekend shows. Monologist Mike Daisey's new one-man show, THE LAST CARGO CULT, debuted at The Public telling the autobiographical story of his time in the South Pacific at the base of a constantly erupting volcano. Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and current Public Theater Master Writer Chair Suzan-Lori Parks premiered her new play THE BOOK OF GRACE. Finally, the downtown main stage season closed with BLOODY BLOODY ANDREW JACKSON, written and directed by Alex Timbers with music by Michael Friedman. This production premiered as part of the 2009 Public LAB series, making it the second show to successfully transfer from the LAB to main stage. Following rave reviews, BLOODY BLOODY ANDREW JACKSON received two extensions and remains the second-highest grossing show downtown for The Public in its history. 4514391 550000 Shakespeare in the Park: The 2010 Shakespeare in the Park summer season mounted two Shakespeare plays in repertory, giving audiences eight weeks of free Shakespeare performed by the same company of actors on a rotating schedule. THE MERCHANT OF VENICE featured Tony and Academy Award winner AI Pacino as the inimitable Shylock, helmed by Tony Award-winning Director Daniel Sullivan. This production transferred to Broadway to critical success. Michael Greif returned to The Delacorte to present the comedy THE WINTER'S TALE. Owing to the success of this Shakespeare in the Park season, the 2011 season will feature two Shakespeare productions in repertory. For the first time since 2007, The Public featured an additional performance at the Delacorte Theater attended by nearly 5,000 theatergoers. A three-day concert of Derek Wolcott and Paul Simon's THE CAPEMAN brought director Diane Paulus (HAIR on Broadway and in the Park) back to the Delacorte and featured choreography by Sergio Trujillo (JERSEY BOYS). Free tickets were made available to those who could not wait in line at the Delacorte through the virtual line on the website, and through distribution at community centers in all five boroughs of New York City. A virtual line dedicated to senior citizens was also available, creating greater accessibility. To further broaden our reach, each production received a sign-interpreted performance, an open-captioned performance, and an audio-described performance. These performances make Shakespeare in the Park available to those who are deaf and do not read American Sign Language, patrons who are hard of hearing including the elderly, and patrons who are blind or with low vision, all of whom might otherwise not be able to enjoy live theater. 3744049 294563 New Work & Ancillary Programs: The Public continues to create programs for theater artists and playwrights to develop and produce new work. Through groundbreaking programs we continue to make substantial long-term investments in the future of the American theater by creating opportunities for artist development. The Public's 2009-2010 season featured two festivals - the return of New Work Now!, celebrating free readings of new plays; and the 6th annual Under the Radar festival, featuring cutting-edge work from an international and diverse collection of solo artists, ensembles, musicians, writers, and performance artists. The success of Under the Radar illustrates that The Public serves as a home for devised work - work that is driven by directors, ensembles, and artists from various disciplines.The Public Writers Initiative (PWI), a three tiered program, began in the fall of 2007. The first tier, the Emerging Writers Group (EWG), provides access and resources to early-career playwrights; the second tier provides support and commissions to mid-career writers; and the third tier offers an artistic home for master writers. To date a number of our main stage plays have been written by participants of the PWI and EWG. In 2008, we welcomed Pulitzer Prize winner Suzan-Lori Parks as the first Master Writer Chair. Ms. Parks is in year two of a three-year residency, including teaching duties at NYU, which affords her the opportunity to focus upon creating new work. Additionally, Ms. Parks has played a key role in establishing "The Public goes Green", an organizational initiative to ensure that we do our part for the environment.Last fall, two Broadway transfers successfully took place: BLOODY BLOODY ANDREW JACKSON and THE MERCHANT OF VENICE. Both shows followed highly-acclaimed runs in our 2009-2010 season. HAIR: THE AMERICAN TRIBAL LOVE-ROCK MUSICAL played to packed houses on Broadway, following a successful run at the Delacorte Theater in 2008. In March 2010 the production, awarded the 2009 Tony for Best Musical Revival, ventured to London's West End. In October 2010 we launched the first National Tour of HAIR which continues to wow audiences around the country.
