The Brooklyn Museum studies, preserves and exhibits a vast and comprehensive collection that spans nearly 5,000 years of history and broadly represents virtually every culture in the world. In FY 2010, a diverse audience of over 375,000 visitors explored this extraordinary resource through permanent installations of the Museum's American, Ancient Near Eastern, African, Asian, Contemporary, Decorative, Egyptian, European, Feminist, and Native American art and Photography collections. Several areas of the Museum's collections, including American and Egyptian art, are generally considered to be among the highest quality in the world. Traveling exhibitions, such as Landscapes from the Age of Impressionism and To Live Forever: Egyptian Treasures from the Brooklyn Museum, provided unique opportunities for audiences from across the nation to experience works from the Museum's renowned collection.

Special Exhibitions The Brooklyn Museum pioneers the presentation and interpretation of the visual and artistic heritage of world cultures. A well-rounded menu of exhibitions maintains its role as a relevant and meaningful resource at the forefront of arts scholarship. In FY 2010, nine special exhibitions: developed and extended the cultural and art historical themes of the Museum's collection; helped to bridge the cultural racial and economic gap between the Museum's traditional audience and a broader public; and attracted extraordinary public attention and attendance.

EducationInnovative education and public programs including programs for K-12 students, teachers, families and adults help an estimated 150,000 visitors each year to: explore the collection and special exhibitions on view; use the arts to strengthen classroom learning; engage in hands-on art-making; and build a life-long connection to the visual arts. Nationally-recognized programs such as First Saturdays have helped the Museum build one of the most diverse audiences of any museum in the nation with 40% who self-identify as persons of color, 50% under the age of 35 and many first-time museum goers. These programs are central to the Museum's mission of making the experience of the visitor its first priority, and of creating an environment where all feel welcome------to be challenged, delighted, educated, and inspired.

<Explanation>History of the Collection: The Brooklyn Museum possesses one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of any museum in the United States. Its collections began in the latter half of the 19th century with the decision that the institution (founded as the Brooklyn Apprentices Library Association and then the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences) would become a collecting institution. A major bequest from founder and benefactor Augustus Graham to acquire works from living American artists lead to its first major acquisitions including Asher B. Durand's First Harvest in the Wilderness which entered the collection in 1855. The collection grew exponentially with the construction of a new facility by architects McKim, Meade and White starting in the late 1890s and continuing through the 1920s. Public subscriptions supported several major purchases including the Tissot Life of Christ series (1901), the Sargent Watercolors (1909) and the Barye bronzes (1910). The arrival of curator Stewart Culin as curator of "Ethnology" opened up new collecting areas and built the foundation for today's collections of Arts of the Americas, African and Asian Art. The foundation of the Egyptian collection began with the donation of The Charles Edwin Wilbour collection followed by an endowment to build this collection which allowed the Museum to purchase The New-York Historical Society's entire Egyptian collection in 1932. The arrival of Trustee Luke Vincent Lockwood, a pioneering scholar and collector of American colonial furniture led to the assembly of period rooms in the early part of the 20th century. In 1934, the Museum changed the focus of its collections from a general scholarly collection to a fine arts collection. With this, many objects were de-accessioned (including natural history collections) and many formerly ethnographic collections were redefined as fine art. Also it continued to expand its collections, particularly in the areas of American Art and Arts of the Americas. Organization of the Collection: Today the Brooklyn Museum's collections are organized as follows: 1. Arts of the Americas and Europe a. European Art b. American Art c. Arts of the Americas d. Decorative Arts 2. Arts of Ancient Egypt, Africa and Asia a. Asian Art b. Islamic Art c. African and Pacific Art d. Egyptian Art 3. Contemporary Art a. Contemporary Art b. Photography 4. Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art Each of these curatorial divisions is overseen by a Managing Curator who oversees curators working in each of the collection areas. Curators are supported by the Conservation, Registration, and Collections Management divisions that assist with the preservation, cataloguing and exhibition of works from the collection. Building the Collection: New acquisitions are guided by a Collections Plan that is officially adopted by the Board of Trustees and reviewed by the Collections Committee and the curatorial team on a regular basis. New acquisitions are considered according to the following criteria: * Will the work be immediately useful in the galleries and will it expand the visitor experience there? * Will the work be transformative for the collection? Will it be a work that becomes part of the canon for which the museum is known and remembered? * Can it be used to illuminate more than one collection area, and bridge the gaps between collections and cultures? * Is it an object of true excellence, fully authentic and in good condition? * Does it have special resonances with works already in the collection? Will it increase the usefulness of existing collections by making them more understandable? Using the Collection to Further the Mission: The Brooklyn Museum is dedicated to the continued study, preservation, exhibition and growth of its collection as a way to serve its mission: to act as a bridge between the rich artistic heritage of world cultures, as embodied in its collections, and the unique experience of each visitor and to serve its diverse publics as a dynamic, innovative and welcoming center for learning through the visual arts. In FY 2010, over 375,000 visitors explored works from the Museum's wide-ranging collections. Additionally, nine special exhibitions of the highest quality developed and extended cultural and art historical themes focused on and supported by the Museum's rich collections and aimed to bridge the cultural, racial, ethnic and economic gap between the Museum's traditional audience and a broader public in Brooklyn and beyond. Finally, innovative education and public programs including programs for K-12 students, teachers, families and adults helped an estimated 150,000 visitors to explore the collection as well as the special exhibitions on view.</Explanation>
