<Description>Library - The Library is the largest programmatic activity of the Boston Athenaeum, serving approximately 5,000 members, their families, the scholarly community, and other members of the public. It is composed of three principal departments: Reader Services, Technical Services, and Conservation.Reader Services at the Boston Athenaeum comprises the public departments that offer library services. The head of reader services and the archivist work in the Reference Department; they answer hundreds of members' and researchers' questions and help in the use of circulating materials, special collections, electronic resources, and online research. Thousands of rare materials are (cont. on schedule o) (cont. from page 2) pulled for the 200-300 researchers who use the special collections room every year. The archivist works closely with the systems administrator in developing and maintaining the web site. The head of circulation and the reader services assistant manage activity at the Circulation Desk, where roughly 17,000 items circulate a year. Ten discussion groups and over 150 tours per year are also arranged by Reader Services. Two interns assist at circulation and reference. The children's librarian helps younger members use the collection and offers programs specifically for them. The Technical Services Department encompasses the functions of Acquisitions, Cataloging, Serials and Systems. These units include the head of technical services, two rare materials catalog librarians, the acquisitions librarian, the serials librarian, two cataloging assistants, and two interns who are responsible for selecting, acquiring, receiving, invoicing, cataloging, and processing approximately 2,500 additions to the Library per year. The systems administrator maintains all computers, networks, and Internet access for both staff and general use and serves a leading role in the development and maintenance of the Athenaeum's web site. The Conservation Department's chief conservator and assistant conservator are dedicated to the care and repair of Athenaeum holdings with inherent historic, artistic or literary value. Athenaeum conservators perform conservation treatments on rare books, maps, manuscripts, prints, architectural drawings, broadsides, and pamphlets.</Description>

<Description>Art Department - The Art Department is responsible for (1) the maintenance, interpretation, and enhancement of the Athenaeum's collections of paintings, sculptures, and works on paper, and (2) the institution's exhibition program. Members of the art department, who are trained art historians, research objects in the collections and disseminate information about them to the scholarly community at large and to the public through lectures, publications, and (in cooperation with museums around the country) an active loan program. Each year, on site, members of the art department also assist hundreds Athenaeum members and visiting scholars in researching artists and periods represented in the Athenaeum's collections. (cont. on schedule o) (cont. from page 2) The department also organizes three exhibitions per year for the institution; these exhibitions cover a range of historical and contemporary subjects, mostly those about or related to the history of the fine arts in the United States. These exhibitions are accompanied by gallery talks, lectures, and symposia, all of which are open to the public. Approximately 200-300 visitors per week view the Athenaeum's exhibitions.</Description>

<Explanation>The collections which were acquired through purchases and contributions since the Athenaeum's inception are not recognized as assets on the statement of financial position. Purchases of collection items are recorded as decreases in unrestricted net assets in the year in which the items are acquired or as temporarily or permanently restricted net assets if the assets used to purchase the items are restricted by donors. Proceeds from deaccessions or insurance recoveries are reflected in as increases in the appropriate net asset classes. The Athenaeum's collections are made up of books, artifacts of historical significance and art objects that are held for educational, research, scientific and curatorial purposes. Each of the items is cataloged, preserved and cared for, and activities verifying their existence and accessing their condition are performed continuously.</Explanation>

<Explanation>The Athenaeum's collections comprise over half a million volumes, extensive holdings of paintings, sculptures, prints, and photographs. Particular strengths are in Boston history, New England state and local history, biography, English and American literature, and the fine and decorative arts. The Athenaeum supports a dynamic exhibition program and sponsors a lively variety of events such as lectures and concerts. It also serves as a stimulating center for discussions among scholars, bibliophiles, and a variety of community-interest groups.</Explanation>

<ReturnReference>Description of Intended Use of Endowment Funds:</ReturnReference>
<Explanation>The Athenaeum's endowment consists of approximately 490 endowment funds established for a variety of purposes. Its endowment includes both donor-restricted endowment funds and funds designated by the Board to function as endowments. Net assets associated with endowment funds are classified and reported based on the existence or absence of donor-imposed or legal restrictions. Endowment funds include invested gifts. The Athenaeum classifies as permanently restricted net assets (a) the original value of gifts donated to the permanent endowment, (b) the original value of subsequent gifts to the permanent endowment, and (c) accumulations to the permanent endowment made in accordance with the direction of the applicable donor gift instrument at the time the accumulation is added to the fund. The remaining portion of the donor-restricted endowment fund that is not classified in permanently restricted net assets is classified as temporarily restricted net assets until those amounts are appropriated for expenditure by the Athenaeum in a manner consistent with the standard of prudence prescribed by state law.</Explanation>

<ReturnReference>Description of Uncertain Tax Positions Under FIN 48:</ReturnReference>
<Explanation>The Athenaeum accounts for the effect of any uncertain tax positions based on a "more likely than not" threshold to the recognition of the tax positions being sustained based on the technical merits of the position under scrutiny by the applicable taxing authority. If a tax position or positions are deemed to result in uncertainties of those positions, the unrecognized tax benefit is estimated based on a "cumulative probability assessment" that aggregates the estimated tax liability for all uncertain tax positions. The Athenaeum has identified its tax status as a tax-exempt entity as a tax position; however, the Athenaeum has determined that such tax position does not result in an uncertainty requiring recognition. The Athenaeum is not currently under examination by any taxing jurisdiction. The Athenaeum's Federal and state tax returns are generally open for examination for three years following the date filed.</Explanation>

These Proprietors' sole function is to elect the officers and governing board of the Athenaeum. The officers and governing board are required to also be Proprietors. Proprietor shares may be bought or sold, given or bequeathed. <Explanation>The Athenaeum was incorporated in 1807. Upon the enactment of the federal income tax in the 20th century, the IRS determined that the Athenaeum was exempt from taxation. This IRS determination occurred prior to the establishment of the application process that includes Form 1023. Consequently no Form 1023 has been required by the IRS or prepared by the Athenaeum. The Athenaeum's bylaws and conflict of interest policy are available for review upon request. The complete audited financial statements are incorporated in the Athenaeum's Annual report, which is available on the Athenaeum's website: http://www.bostonathenaeum.org. The form 990 and audited financial statements are also available via the massachusetts attorney general's website.</Explanation>
