MissionThe Music Hall (TMH) is a community-supported, nonprofit live entertainment venue with acclaimed film, music, theater, literary, and dance performances in two theaters in downtown Portsmouth, NH. Its 900-seat Historic Theater, built in 1878, is the oldest in NH. Its second venue, built in 2011 and renovated in 2022, is The Lounge, a modern 116-seat cabaret seated venue. In addition to presenting diverse and relevant programming, TMH hosts community fundraisers and celebrations and partners with more than 60 local nonprofits. In a typical year, TMH offers 52 weeks of programming (just under 600 events), engages over 100,000 patrons in the arts and learning, and contributes nearly $12 million to the local economy through show- and visitor-related spending (according to the Americans for the Arts "Arts and Economic Prosperity" survey).MissionDesc

Form 990, Part III, Line 1 ContinuationTMH's mission is to invigorate audiences, nurture healthy communities, and drive economic vitality in the region, stewarding our Historic Theater and delivering high-quality entertainment, lifelong learning, and shared experiences in our venues. The 2022-23 Season was a successful year for The Music Hall. Though we just adopted a new Strategic Plan in January 2023, we have already made a positive impact on our community through progress on our first strategic initiative to Deliver a First-Class Patron Experience & Build New Audiences. Between July 2022 and June 2023, with 52 weeks of programming, The Music Hall (TMH) provided hundreds of opportunities for people to share experiences and connect with one another through the arts. Thanks to carefully crafted programming and marketing efforts, this included welcoming regular patrons, reengaging patrons who've not been to the theater in some time, and attracting new patrons who have never before visited, with attendance totaling 91,327. Nearly 11,000 of those patrons were first time visitors. Throughout the reporting period, The Music Hall continued its tradition of offering a diverse range of high-quality performances, educational programs, and cultural events. Our activities can be summarized as follows: Fundraising: To ensure access to our offerings for our Seacoast community, The Music Hall operates a number of initiatives designed to make programming and our physical spaces affordable and accessible to all, initiatives supported by dedicated fundraising campaigns. The Music Hall actively engaged in fundraising initiatives during the year, soliciting contributions from individuals, corporations, and foundations. These funds were crucial for sustaining the operations of The Music Hall and represent 30% of the annual operating income. In FY23 The Music Hall launched a new fundraising event, specifically with the goal of raising funds to support our ability to present artists early in their careers and on their way to the national stage: the Emerging Artist Benefit Concert. We were incredibly fortunate to host Music Hall fan-favorite Brandi Carlile for the inaugural Emerging Artist Benefit Concert in February 2023 - fresh off her blazing performance at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards, where she took home three of the coveted trophies. Carlile was the ideal person to launch the Emerging Artist Benefit Concert series because of her personal connections to the organization and its mission. Community Outreach: The Music Hall organized and supported a variety of community outreach programs in 2022-23, making the performing arts accessible to a wide and diverse audience. A primary focus this year was the expansion of our Give the Gift of Magic campaign to provide complimentary tickets to neighbors in need, which we grew from a holiday-focused effort to a year round initiative, and as a result significantly increased the numbers served to nearly 600. Through Give the Gift we welcomed 243 people to the Ogunquit Playhouse at The Music Hall's production of Elf the Musical and 235 people to Million Dollar Quartet, plus another 120 who came for other events, including comedians, authors, musicians, and more. The Music Hall also created opportunities for students to meet and engage with professional artists including Grammy-winner Brandi Carlile, who met with emerging artists from the Portsmouth Music & Art Center, and members of Camille A. Brown & Dancers who led a workshop for students from the University of New Hampshire. By collaborating with arts and social service organizations we were able to pool our resources to address our missions. The Music Hall worked with 60 community partners this year; noteworthy efforts include collaborations with: Gather (our 9th annual Fill the Hall food drive), Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire (Juneteenth programming), Ogunquit Playhouse (adding a second production to our annual partnership in an effort to reclaim revenues lost due to the pandemic), Prescott Park Arts Festival (serving as an official rain venue for 6 of their largest shows), and the New Hampshire Film Festival (building on our traditional role as a venue by providing administrative support). Program Accomplishments: The Music Hall has achieved significant accomplishments over the reporting period. These accomplishments reflect our ongoing commitment to the promotion and support of the performing arts: Artistic Excellence: The Music Hall curated an exceptional lineup, offering more than 350 events, including 125+ films and more than 75 live performances in the Historic Theater as well as another approximately 150 live events in The Lounge. Live events featured musicians from many genres, authors, comedians, dancers, and thought leaders. These programs brought cultural enrichment to the community and contributed to the preservation of the arts. Approximately one third of these shows were sold out or nearly sold out (90% sold or greater). The range of genres presented and ticket prices offered helped TMH work toward our goal of attracting broad audiences and serving greater numbers of residents. As a reflection of our commitment to remain financially accessible, the average price for a ticket to an event at The Music Hall in 2022-23 was just $47; prices for shows in The Lounge started at $8, while shows in the Historic Theater started at $14 (excluding free ticket initiatives). Educational Initiatives: For more than 25 years, TMH has been introducing thousands of school children to the joys of the performing arts. In 2022-23 we welcomed nearly 3,000 students from 22 schools for three separate programs. Dedicated fundraising campaigns helped to maintain our low $8 ticket price, and thanks to our scholarship fund, 226 students received complimentary tickets and transportation reimbursements. Students came to TMH from across the region, with one school group driving nearly 35 miles and another group walking just .3 miles down the street. To ensure access to a broad population, we've been working to extend our homeschool network. In the 2023-24 season, we have six programs scheduled, marking a return to pre-pandemic numbers when we would serve 8,000 students annually. Historic Preservation and Facilities Improvement: The Music Hall continues work in preserving the integrity of our historic facilities. In 2022-23, thanks to a dedicated fundraising campaign, we addressed our outdated artist hospitality facilities. The newly renovated space is now multi-functional, with a comfortable artist hospitality area as well as a kitchen, laundry, and additional office and production flex space. These and other capital projects and improvements were undertaken to ensure the venue remains a cultural treasure for generations to come. The Music Hall also invested in our smaller venue, formerly known as The Loft. Following work to enhance appearances as well as function, we reopened the space as The Lounge in July 2022, with an open concept, cabaret-style layout that can seat just over 100 people. Patron and artist response has been incredibly positive. Financial Summary: The financial health of The Music Hall remains robust. In FY23 The Music Hall strove to recover revenues lost due to the pandemic (i.e. the reduction in sponsorships, limited film programming and thus audiences, a lack of author tours and literary events) by increasing programming volume and piloting an extension of our partnership with the Ogunquit Playhouse, collaborating on a spring production, Million Dollar Quartet, to augment the success of our annual holiday production. We operated with transparency and efficiency, ensuring that the majority of funds raised were directed towards supporting The Music Hall's programming and mission. Our commitment to financial responsibility has allowed us to maintain a strong balance sheet and sustain our efforts in the long term. Future Outlook: Looking ahead, with the guidance of our 2023-2025 Strategic Plan, The Music Hall is poised to pursue our vision to enrich, entertain, and inspire all through world-renowned and community-based programming in our beloved gathering spaces. We will continue to seek partnerships, engage the community, and explore innovative ways to enhance the cultural vitality of Portsmouth and the surrounding region. We remain committed to preserving the historic legacy of The Music Hall and making the performing arts an accessible and enriching experience for all. In conclusion, The Music Hall is proud of the accomplishments and progress made during the reporting period. We are grateful for the continued support of our donors, volunteers, and the entire Portsmouth community. Together, we will continue to celebrate the performing arts and ensure that The Music Hall remains a cornerstone of cultural life in our region.
