Form And Line ReferenceFormAndLineReferenceDescExplanationExplanationTxt
Part X, Line 2:The Conference is exempt from income taxes under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and applicable state law, except for taxes pertaining to unrelated business income. The accounting standard on uncertainty in income taxes addresses the determination of whether tax benefits claimed or expected to be claimed on a tax return should be recorded in the financial statements. Under this guidance, the Conference may recognize the tax benefit from an uncertain tax position only if it is more likely than not that the tax position will be sustained on examination by taxing authorities, based on the technical merits of the position. Examples of tax positions include the tax-exempt status of the Conference and various positions related to the potential sources of unrelated business taxable income. The tax benefits recognized in the financial statements from such a position are measured based on the largest benefit that has a greater than 50 percent likelihood of being realized upon ultimate settlement. There were no unrecognized tax benefits identified or recorded as liabilities during the periods covered by these consolidated financial statements. The Conference files Form 990 in the U.S. federal jurisdiction and in various states.
Part XI, Line 2d - Other Adjustments:Income from Equity Investments 156,071,842.
Part XI, Line 4b - Other Adjustments:Amounts Collected for Benefit of Member Schools 583,371,691. Big Ten Network Holdings, LLC Dividend 60,958,500.
Part XII, Line 4b - Other Adjustments:Amounts Remitted to Member Schools 670,271,342.
Part X, Line 1:Accrued Benefit/Deferred Compensation: In July 2015, Commissioner Delany became eligible for future bonus payments pursuant to his employment contract. Accordingly, in fiscal year 2016, the Conference accrued the future liability and continues to relieve that liability as payments are made. Accrued Payroll Tax Payable: In addition to the future liability arising from the deferred compensation, the Conference also accrued a liability for the related payroll tax from the payment of the deferred compensation. Excise Tax Payable: The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which was enacted on December 22, 2017, provided that certain tax exempt organizations would be subject to a 21% excise tax if they paid an employee more than $1 million in annual compensation. This tax provision was effective for our tax year beginning July 1, 2020 and ending June 30, 2021 and the organization has accrued the future excise tax liability during the current fiscal year. Due to Member Schools: At the end of the fiscal year, the Conference knew of certain amounts that would be distributed to member schools, upon receipt of cash payments. These amounts were accrued as Due to Member Schools at fiscal year end and paid shortly thereafter, upon receipt of payments from third parties.

ExplanationThe Big Ten Conference acts as an intermediary and collects cash receipts on behalf of the member schools from television contracts, bowl games, football championship games, and basketball tournaments, and remits such amounts to member schools. Since it is a pass-through organization, rather than grant giving, the Big Ten Conference does not attach parameters to or require reporting on how the funds are utilized. The monies can be used at the member schools' discretion to pursue their independent missions. The Council of Presidents/Chancellors approved the allocation of $32,643 to each university toward the creation of internship opportunities earmarked to promote diversity in intercollegiate athletics. The use of these funds is at the discretion of each institution; however the funds must be used to create new internship opportunities. The goal of the program is to provide the intern exposure and experience to athletic administration that could prepare the individual for an entry-level administration position in college athletics.ExplanationTxt
