DescPublic Education: 2021 Offering of Letters. Bread for the World's 2021 Offering of Letters was launched in early March and was used primarily as an organizing and educational tool. The Offering of Letters spanned four topics-food systems, climate change, economic justice, and racial and gender equity-under the umbrella of a Right to Food. (To be continued in Schedule O)Public Education: On March 24, Bread hosted "Food Systems, Farmworkers and Covid-19: An Equitable Recovery Through Advocacy" featuring frontline farmworkers of color and a guest appearance by U.S. Senator Cory Booker. This event introduced our Offering of Letters educational theme of food systems. Panelists discussed the connection between efficient, equitable food systems and how public policies may ensure these systems - and the people who drive them - recover from the devastating impact of COVID-19. This educational webinar garnered more than 750 registrants, of which 163 were new to Bread.Desc

DescOutreach and Advocacy: Grassroots Organizing. Our grassroots work had three pillars: 1) relationship building with new and diverse constituencies as well as existing constituents, grounded in the Right to Food framework; 2) education and equipping; and 3) mobilization around our legislative agenda, particularly global nutrition. More than 200 in-district meetings were organized with members of Congress or their staff on global nutrition and/or Child Tax Credit. (To be continued in Schedule O)Outreach and Advocacy: Bread for the World's regional and state organizers focus on building strong regional networks and strategically mobilizing around our legislative agenda. Below are regional highlights from 2021: Midwest (IA, IL, IN, KS, MI, MN, MO, ND, NE, OH, SD, WI) - 65 in-district meetings with members of Congress or staff. - 21 cosponsors secured for the Global Malnutrition Prevention and Treatment Act (H.R. 4693). - More than 500 leaders participated in regional meetings. - In Indiana, the Bread team hosted 300 Hoosiers for an online meeting, "Feeding Our Economy: Food Security. Good for Business," with U.S. Sen. Mike Braun (R-IN). Northeast (CT, DE, MA, MD, ME, NH, NJ, NY, PA, RI, VT) - 18 cosponsors secured for H.R. 4693. - Hosted an op-ed training with Rethink Media focused on the Child Tax Credit (CTC) and published 7 op-eds to date. - Members met with U.S. Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA) to strengthen our relationship with one of the most prominent anti-hunger members of Congress. Southeast (AL, AR, FL, GA, KY, LA, MS, NC, SC, TN, VA, WV, DC) - 48 in-district meetings with members of Congress or staff. - Eight cosponsors secured for H.R. 4693. - 100 students and faculty attended a meeting with the White House White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships to share about the realities of hunger on their campuses. - Hosted conversations with Black farmers and submitted report to the 2021 UN Food Systems Summit. - In West Virginia, a delegation met twice with U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and published four op-eds on CTC. Southwest (AZ, NM, OK, TX) - 42 in-district meetings with members of Congress or staff. - 10 cosponsors secured for H.R. 4693. - 100 people attended a regional meeting with the White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships to share about the realities of hunger in their communities. - In Arizona, the Bread team met and built a relationship with U.S. Sen. Kyrsten Sinema's (D-AZ) legislative director and hosted a virtual press conference and an in-person rally focused on making the CTC permanent. West (AK, CA, CO, HI, ID, MT, NV, OR, UT, WA, WY) - 56 in-district meetings with members of Congress or staff. - 21 cosponsors secured for H.R. 4693. - In California, facilitated letter-writing, calls, in-district meetings, and testimony before the state senate in support of SB 108 Human Right to Food Act and SB 464 Food4All, which would eliminate barriers to CalFresh (SNAP) for immigrants. In May, Bread hosted "Advocacy 101: Ending Hunger, College Edition." A campus organizer from Barry University shared her organizing efforts about the EATS Act and the Swipe Out Hunger effort addressing college/university food insecurity. 2021 Virtual Advocacy Summit. On July 12 and 13, more than 500 people participated in: Invest in Children, Transform the Future. More than two hundred of the attendees were not already Bread members and an additional 538 registered but did not attend. The two-day virtual event focused on hunger among children with special attention to domestic child nutrition reauthorization and global nutrition. The event included a Latino Convening, African American/Pan African Consultation, and regional gatherings. Participants were encouraged to ask their elected officials to increase global nutrition funding to $300 million for the 2022 Foreign Operations and Related Agencies Appropriations Act and to combat hunger and poverty at home by adopting a 1,000-days infrastructure plan. On the final day of the summit, Bread members joined regional Zoom meetings to connect and share ideas with other anti-hunger advocates in their states and neighboring states.Black, African American, Pan African Engagement. In September, Bread held a webinar to explore the joys and challenges of young, Black leaders running for office featuring board member Heather Hardinger. Bread also facilitated a webinar with UN and Pan African experts around the International Day of People of African Descent. Bread also piloted new ways to engage Black millennial audiences. - In Florida, over four months, twelve interns organized their communities through conducting the Racial Wealth Gap Simulation; an Offering of Letters event with their church, school, or job; created two social media campaigns highlighting the 1,000 days agenda; and planned congressional meetings in their districts. - In North Carolina, a group created a statewide coalition looking to pursue advocacy and farming educational activities, hosted a webinar featuring US Department of Agriculture officials, and hosted an IG live with the next generation of Black farmers. - On social media, Bread featured Black Millennial pastors and amplified the voices of upcoming Black faith leaders in social media campaigns. A video on best tips for cross-generational organizing was created and shared at the Advocacy Summit. Latino Engagement. Bread for the World staff conducted 72 listening sessions across the country with young adult Latinos from various denominations and secular organizations about advocacy and hunger. They found that young Latinos have experience in local and state level advocacy, but some skepticism about how effective federal advocacy might be. Their top issues include the root causes of migration and hunger, COVID recovery, racial equity, and immigration, and there is strong interest in small group and intentional community building where they can pray, learn, and take action together. This learning will inform our planning for 2022. White House Engagement. Bread convened a diverse group of faith leaders to talk about how we might ask the White House to create a road map to put the U.S. back on track to ending hunger. This group helped engage the White House in conversation with communities and faith leaders around the country on hunger issues. Josh Dickson, Senior Advisor for the Office of Public Engagement at the White House, joined calls in Bread's Southwest, Southeast, and Midwest regions where activists and faith leader attendees were able to hear directly from him and share directly with him their communities' experiences, needs, and concerns on hunger and poverty issues.Desc

DescPublic Policy: Bread for the World's work in recent years has been focused on the goal of helping to make hunger and poverty a higher U.S. priority - toward the long-term goal of ending hunger by 2030. New Global Nutrition Legislation IntroducedFor more than a decade, Bread for the World's advocacy efforts and focus on malnutrition has been central to advancing progress on ending (To be continued in Schedule O)Public Policy: hunger. Malnutrition contributes to nearly half of all preventable deaths among children under age 5.In 2020, Bread for the World members helped persuade Congress to pass the bipartisan Global Nutrition resolutions (H.Res.189/S.Res.260). These landmark resolutions called for increased U.S. leadership in the effort to reduce child malnutrition around the world and provided evidence of the broad, bipartisan support for action on global nutrition. The momentum created with the resolutions and the relationships Bread members formed with their members of Congress around global nutrition set the stage for the 2021 introduction of the Global Malnutrition Prevention and Treatment Act (H.R. 4693/S. 2956). In July 2021, the House Foreign Affairs Committee introduced and passed the bill, led by U.S. Reps. Michael McCaul (R-TX), Gregory Meeks (D-NY), Young Kim, (R-CA), and Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA). In October 2021, the Senate version of the bill was introduced by honorary Bread for the World board member U.S. Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE), and U.S. Sens. John Boozman (R-AR), Tim Kaine (D-VA), and Roger Wicker (R-MS). This bipartisan legislation has the potential to improve the lives of tens of millions of women and children around the world. The Global Malnutrition Prevention and Treatment Act directs the U.S. government to create a comprehensive plan to end global malnutrition. If passed, the act will give USAID the ability to set a long-term strategy and coordinate nutrition interventions across multiple agencies.Bread for the World was instrumental in helping to draft the language and concept for this bill. Since its introduction, Bread for the World members have urged their members of Congress to cosponsor and pass this bipartisan legislation. To date, 80 percent of the bill's cosponsors were influenced to sign their names to the legislation as a result of conversations or meetings with Bread members and staff.Child Tax Credit Expanded for One Year Bread for the World members have long advocated for increases and improvements to the Child Tax Credit (CTC). The CTC is one of the most powerful poverty and hunger fighting tools of the federal government. It has the potential to puts money in the hands of struggling families and lets them decide how best to use it to improve the lives of their children. In March 2021, Bread for the World members played a key role in ensuring a one-year expansion of the CTC was included in the American Rescue Plan Act passed by Congress. The temporary expansion of the Child Tax Credit moved more than 4 million children out of poverty and cut in half the number of children in deep poverty.Unfortunately, the temporary expansion of the CTC expired at the end of 2021. Bread for the World members continue to urge Congress to make the expanded improvements in the CTC permanent. The improvements could do more to reduce child hunger than any single U.S. policy has in decades. An estimated 10 million children are at risk of returning to poverty if the expansion does not become permanent. FY22 International Nutrition Funding Increased with Strong Bipartisan SupportBread for the World members secured an unprecedented level of bipartisan support from members of Congress to increase nutrition funding for 2022. Bread for the World board member U.S. Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA) worked with U.S. Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) on a "Dear Colleague" letter calling for an increase in nutrition funding - specifically $300 million in appropriations for fiscal year 2022. This would result in a doubling of funding for global nutrition. The increased funding has the potential to save the lives of more than 160,000 children. It would also prevent stunting for more than half a million children, treat more than 3 million severely malnourished children, and prevent anemia for more than 12 million women. In the end, 135 bipartisan members of Congress signed on to the letter. Garnering this level of bipartisan support is a success not only because of the adverse political environment in Congress, but also because of the significant increase in funds appropriated compared to the prior year. Bread for the World staff reached out to more than 300 Hill offices and coordinated efforts with other national anti-hunger organizations. Bread for the World members reached out to 50 targeted members of Congress from their congressional districts.Anti-Hunger Measures Included in COVID-19 Relief BillsBread for the World members helped to get emergency relief to those households most in need during the pandemic - and as a result hunger decreased. Bread members helped secure a 15 percent increase in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. Bread for the World also advocated for an expansion of pandemic unemployment insurance, debt relief for socially disadvantaged farmers and ranchers, and robust funding for the international response to COVID-19. These measures were all included in the American Rescue Plan Act passed by Congress in March 2021 and helped millions of Americans who were struggling to put food on the table. The SNAP increase benefitted approximately 40 percent of families who receive SNAP.Bread for the World also sent letters to U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, asking the USDA to help improve access to healthy foods, resolve barriers to WIC, extend universal school meals, and expand the use of electronic benefit transfer cards, thus ensuring that no matter where children live, they have access to the nutrition they need to thrive.SNAP Benefits Permanently IncreasedBread for the World's nearly-40-year history of advocacy on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), our work on the 2018 Farm Bill, and our letters to the administration, all came to fruition when the administration announced that it would permanently increase SNAP benefits. The increase is the largest permanent increase to benefits in the program's history and is a result of a reexamination of the mathematical model used to calculate benefits mandated by the 2018 Farm Bill. The average SNAP benefit will increase by more than 25 percent from pre-pandemic levels. All 42 million participants in the SNAP program will receive the additional assistance on an ongoing basis.Desc

Form And Line ReferenceFormAndLineReferenceDescExplanationExplanationTxt
Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 6Membership includes individuals or organizations who make an annual financial contribution to BREAD or who otherwise distinguish themselves through their service to BREAD.
Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 7aEach member is entitled to vote for each vacant Board of Director position that is to be filled by voting members. Members can cast their ballots by mail or electronic means. Five hundred member votes constitute a quorum for a valid election. This is the sole voting privilege enjoyed by members.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11bThe Controller and Director of Finance compare the Federal Form 990 to the audited financial statements. All variances are verified against schedules to determine that they are correct.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12cOn an annual basis, members of the Board of Directors sign a new conflict of interest statement. Any possible conflicts listed are reviewed by the Vice President of Finance and Administration to determine if they truly reflect a conflict. If so, the statements are discussed with the Audit Committee. If the Committee believes the conflict is real, the Board Member is asked to either resign from the Board or to stop the activity that is creating the conflict.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15Periodically, the human resource department receives general market data from an outside compensation consultant to determine if salaries are in line with organizations of similar mission and/or size. A more thorough market analysis of compensation of specific positions is provided by an outside compensation consultant on an ad hoc basis. The President's salary is reviewed by the Board of Directors on a periodic basis. This is discussed and documented in the executive session. These notes are kept by the Board Secretary and are not open to the public. However, the Board does seek the same independent comparison data for the President that BREAD seeks for all other staff, including other members of the Executive Team.
Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19BREAD's website includes governance and financial information. Several charity and business rating sites, such as the Better Business Bureau and Charity Navigator also post these documents and additional information. BREAD also makes information available to the public upon request.
