Part V, Line 4: Intended uses of the endowment fund.Endowment funds are designated for purposes that align within the organization's exempt purpose.
Part X : FIN48 FootnoteNorthern Light Health, its hospitals, and certain other affiliates have been determined by the Internal Revenue Service to be tax-exempt charitable organizations as described in Section 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(2) of the Internal Revenue Code (the Code) and, accordingly, are exempt from federal income taxes on related income pursuant to Section 501(a) of the Code. Accordingly, no provision for federal income taxes has been recorded in the accompanying consolidated financial statements for these organizations.Tax-exempt charitable organizations could be required to record an obligation for income taxes as the result of a tax position they have historically taken on various tax exposure items including unrelated business income or tax status. Under guidance issued by the FASB, assets and liabilities are established for uncertain tax positions taken or positions expected to be taken in income tax returns when such positions are judged to not meet the "more-likely-than-not" threshold, based upon the technical merits of the position. Estimated interest and penalties, if applicable, related to uncertain tax positions are included as a component of income tax expense. Northern Light Health has evaluated its tax position taken or expected to be taken on income tax returns and concluded the impact to be not material.Certain of Northern Light Health's affiliates are taxable entities. Deferred taxes related to these entities are based on the difference between the financial statement and tax basis of assets and liabilities using enacted tax rates in effect in the years the differences are expected to reverse. The deferred tax assets and liabilities for these entities are not material.

Facility: Northern Light Inland Hospital - Part V, Section B, Line 5The Maine Shared CHNA research team conducted a statewide qualitative assessment among stakeholders to identify and prioritize significant health issues in communities across the state. The assessment, coordinated with the Maine CDC, engaged public health expertise throughout the process. Community outreach was conducted between September 2018 and January 2019. Community forums with residents and service providers were held in the county. All forms of engagement included public forums and key informant interviews. The purpose of this outreach was to gather feedback on data and to identify health priorities, community assets, and gaps in resources to be used in health improvement planning. Local forums were conducted in partnership with the Maine CDC to solicit input from individuals representing populations with health disparities including medically underserved, low-income, or minority populations. The following organizations attended the October 18, 2018 or December 6, 2018 Kennebec Shared CHNA Community Engagement Forum and provided valuable feedback on the Maine Shared CHNA.Persons representing broad interests of the community who were consulted during the engagement process (the following list was extracted from the Kennebec County CHNA report, pages 27-29): Alcom LLC, Anthem, Inc., Backyard Farms, Bath Iron Works/General Dynamics, Central Public Health District, City of Waterville, Cives Steel Company, CM Almy, Colby College, Community Member, Cross Benefit Solutions, Daniel Hanley Center for Health Leadership, Family Violence Project, Friends of Quarry Road, G&E Roofing Company, Inc., Healthy Communities of the Capital Area, Healthy Northern Kennebec, HealthReach Community Health Centers, HUB International New England, LLC, Huhtamaki, Jennifer Kierstead Consulting, Inc., Kennebec Behavioral Health, Kennebec Valley Community Action Program, Maine CDC, MaineGeneral Health, MaineGeneral Medical Center, MaineGeneral Prevention & Healthy Living Drug Overdose Prevention Program, MaineGeneral Workplace Health, Maine Oral Health Coalition, Maine Public Health Association, Maine Veterans' Homes, Mastering Worksite Wellness, MaineGeneral Employee Assistance Program, Mid Maine Homeless Shelter & Services, Northern Light Acadia Hospital, Northern Light Health, Northern Light Inland Hospital, Peachey Builders, Retired community member, Sappi North America, Sharon Lee, Writer, Spectrum Generations, Steve Miller, Writer, Summit Natural Gas of Maine, The Maine Children's Home for Little Wanderers, United Way of Mid-Maine, University of Maine system, Winslow Baptist Church, Winslow Township School District.Key informant interview populations identified by the Maine Shared CHNA steering committee included medically underserved and vulnerable populations to ensure their input was heard and captured included:Veterans; Tribal communities; Adults ages 65 and older who are isolated or have multiple chronic conditions; Non-English speakers, undocumented individuals, immigrants, and refugees; Deaf individuals and those with other physical disabilities; Adolescents/youth; LGBTQ; People with mental health conditions and developmental disabilities; Rural individuals; Individuals in substance use disorder recovery/substance use disorder prevention and treatment professionals. The following is a list of organizations who participated in Key Informant Interviews. Facility: Northern Light Inland Hospital - Part V, Section B, Line 6aThe Maine Shared CHNA was conducted through a collaborative effort among Maines four largest health-care systems Central Maine Healthcare, Northern Light Health (legal name Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems), MaineGeneral Health, MaineHealth and the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, an office of the Maine Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). Northern Light Health member organizations participating in the Shared CHNA included Acadia Hospital, AR Gould Hospital, Blue Hill Hospital, CA Dean Hospital, Eastern Maine Medical Center, Inland Hospital, Maine Coast Hospital, Mayo Hospital, Mercy Hospital, and Sebasticook Valley Hospital.
Facility: Northern Light Inland Hospital - Part V, Section B, Line 11The data gathered from the 2019 Shared Community Health Needs Assessment (Shared CHNA) informed Northern Light Inland Hospitals Community Health Strategy (Implementation Strategy) developed with input from community stakeholders including those who serve priority populations, the local Public Health District Liaison, local business leaders, and community advocates. Priorities were selected after weighing the severity of each priority area, availability of known and effective interventions, determination that the priority area was un-addressed or under-addressed, and community collaborations underway with Inland Hospital. A hospital task force considered the data and identified areas of significant need including priority concerns, intended actions to address the need, programs and resource allocation, planned collaborations, and population of focus. The implementation strategy was presented and adopted by the hospitals governing board. Northern Light Inland Hospital identified four priority areas of focus addressing the significant needs identified in its 2019 CHNA as follows:Physical activity, nutrition, weightActions taken by Inland Hospital to address this priority in FY21: Northern Light Inland Hospital focused on the evidence-based Lets Go! program, which promotes healthy eating and active living to reduce childhood obesity rates. The hospitals Lets Go! coordinator met in-person or virtually with Lets Go! site champions from schools and childcare centers. Sites were primarily supported virtually, through emailing or virtual meeting platforms. The main focus of this year was to continue building relationships with these sites and be available for support through the year as they navigated challenges with COVID-19 while trying to implement Lets Go! 5210 strategies encouraging individuals to consume five fruits or vegetables per day, two hours or less of recreational screen time, one hour of physical activity every day, and zero sugary beverages. The coordinator worked with site champions and other engaged staff to develop action plans for their various schools/early childcare programs/school nutrition programs for the year, with plans aimed at increasing physical activity and nutritious choices. The coordinator assisted in keeping the sites accountable by following up on their goals and offering persistent communication and support.Mental healthActions taken by Inland Hospital to address this priority in FY21: Northern Light Inland Hospitals Community Wellness coordinator worked to develop a behavioral health program for a local school district, to address topics of anxiety, suicide prevention, bullying, and resiliency. They partnered with Northern Light Acadia Hospital and Acadia associate vice president of Pediatric Services to facilitate a behavioral health program for 25 staff at the Maine Arts Academy in Sidney on April 30, 2021. The program addressed stressors for students, staff, and caregivers related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The staff who attended the presentation were provided tools and strategies for self-care and supporting the 201 students at the high school.Substance useActions taken by Inland Hospital to address this priority in FY21: Northern Light Inland Hospital aimed to recruit and train MAT prescribers at the hospitals primary care sites. They were able to maintain seven MAT trained providers at the beginning of FY21 despite COVID-19 challenges but had to adapt and focused on developing provider engagement strategies to involve more providers in MAT, resulting in a net of five MAT trained providers at the end of FY21.Social determinants of healthActions taken by Inland Hospital to address this priority in FY21: Northern Light Inland Hospital engaged 18 healthcare partner sites throughout the year to conduct a two-question screening for food insecurity at patient intake using the hospitals Cerner medical record platform. They aimed to expand this outreach from 12 partner sites in FY20, as food insecurity continues to be a major challenge to the Waterville area community. The COVID-19 pandemic caused an increased awareness in food insecurity in this community as well. Early in FY21, Inland Hospital partnered with the Good Shepherd Food Bank and the USDA Farmers to Families Food Box program to host a drive-up food pantry event. Community members could drive up and food supplies were put directly into their vehicle. 1,150 boxes of free food were distributed.Additional information related to actions taken by Northern Light Inland Hospital on the above priorities can be found in their FY21 Progress Report to Our Community at https://northernlighthealth.org/2019-Community-Health-Strategy. Northern Light Inland Hospital considered all priorities identified in the Shared CHNA, as well as other sources, through an extensive review process. While the full spectrum of needs is important, Inland Hospital is currently poised to focus only on the highest priorities at this time. A number of priorities not selected, due to a variety of reasons are listed below:Access to Care - This identified health need is not being addressed directly as a strategy born out of our community health needs assessment as our hospital has current initiatives focused on improving access to care such as provider recruitment, the establishment of walk-in care (bridging the gap between primary care and emergency room visits), community health navigators (to link vulnerable populations with needed resources) and other efforts that are ongoing and part of our continual mission to improve access to care. Older Adult Health/Healthy Aging - We decided not to focus on this priority because it is already a focus of another health system in our community, as well as several local agencies, such as Spectrum Generations.

Part VI, Line 4 - Community Building ActivitiesNorthern Light Inland Hospital gets involved and gives back to our community to improve quality of life in Greater Waterville its how we help fulfill our community service mission to improve the health of the people and communities we serve. Whether its sponsoring scholarships to the local colleges, supporting physical activity and nutrition initiatives in our local schools, funding local public transportation, or supporting a cultural or economic development effort, Northern Light Inland Hospital is proud to support and collaborate with groups that foster health and well-being. While the COVID-19 pandemic impacted our abilities in 2021, we still found ways to engage and support the communities we serve through board memberships and committee work, community benefit donations, and school connections.
Part VI, Line 5 - Promotion of Community HealthNorthern Light Inland Hospital furthers its exempt purpose by promoting the health of the community through the following grant activity in FY21:Community Health Education: Lets Go - Mini grants for enrolled schools and childcare programs; Rural Health Clinic Vaccine Confidence Program - Improve vaccine and counter vaccine hesitancy in rural communities where COVID-19 uptake lags in comparison to more populated areas.Social and Environmental Improvement Activities: JTG - Support the provision of on-site food, food security resources, and transportation vouchers to primary care patients at NLHAt Northern Light Inland Hospital, we strive to live up to our non-profit mission every day by caring for community members who otherwise would have limited access to quality healthcare. Besides providing charity care and financial assistance, we believe we can also affect the health of the communities we serve beyond the walls of our hospital and medical practices. We agree with the World Health Organization which states, Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. We have a vision to be a responsible corporate citizen whose actions can impact our communitys overall well-being through commitments to priority issues. A hospital task force considered priority issues from the Community Health Needs Assessment and other data, and identified areas of significant needs to be addressed, as well as areas of need unable to be addressed by the hospital. An Implementation Strategy was developed and consisted of actions the hospital took to address the health need. Programs/resources the hospital committed to address the health need were identified along with planned collaborations with other area organizations. Northern Light Inland Hospital focused on four key areas: Physical Activity, nutrition, weight; Mental health; Substance abuse; Social determinants of health. In addition to efforts led by Northern Light Inland Hospital and our collaborating partners on the issues above through our Community Health Strategy, resources such as in-kind staff time and community benefit funding were dedicated to the following secondary issues:-Domestic Violence-Homelessness-Economic development-Education-Cultural supportNorthern Light Inland Hospital's 2021 Community Wellness initiatives included:a)We continued to dedicate Community Wellness Coordinator staff time to provide Lets Go! technical support to local schools, after-schools, and childcare sites. Lets Go! is an evidence-based childhood obesity prevention program that focuses on promoting good nutrition, physical activity, less screen time and more water consumption/less sugary drinks. b)We also utilized the Lets Go! program in the healthcare sector. Four out of Northern Light Inland Hospitals six Lets Go registered practices were recognized in 2019 for their efforts to curb childhood obesity in our patient populations. Components of the program include displaying posters with the 5210 healthy habits messages, tracking weight classification for patients ages 2-18, and using the Healthy Habits survey at all well-child visits to inspire respectful conversations around weight status and lifestyle behaviors. c)We continued to maintain the Inland Woods Trail on the hospital campus (created in 2010) with support from several local organizations. The trails were developed to create a lasting way to impact health, and give residents an easy, free resource for regular activity. The trails are used regularly by residents, hospital staff, and local schools for walking, biking, and snowshoeing. The trail head was enhanced by adding a family-friendly Little Free Library in 2017.d)We provided ongoing support for the Quarry Road Recreation Area to support event and youth program sponsorships, and in-kind contributions of staff volunteer hours and board participation. e)We employ a full-time Community Health Navigator to help patients connect to local resources that help them overcome barriers to good health, such as housing, medication support, transportation, food support, and health care access. A majority of Northern Light Inland Hospitals board of trustees is comprised of people who reside in our primary service area who are neither employees nor independent contractors of the organization, nor family members thereof. Northern Light Inland Hospital extends medical staff privileges to qualified physicians in its community for some or all of its departments or specialties. The Northern Light Inland Hospital Foundation helps by raising funds for everything from capital expansion projects to residential activities to help offset normal operating expenses.Northern Light Inland Hospital utilizes surplus funds to support a medical simulation center on the hospital campus that is used for training of clinical staff. Examples of training include Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Neonatal Resuscitation Program, and Pediatric Advanced Life Support. Training is not limited to employees at Northern Light Inland Hospital - we also offer courses to local Emergency Medical Technicians and to clinicians at other hospitals in our region. Northern Light Inland Hospital invites men, women, and young adults to volunteer their time to further the hospital's mission. The pandemic impacted the amount of time volunteers from our community were allowed to volunteer and/or chose to participate. Some volunteers work in areas with direct contact with patients and families; others are involved in behind the scene activities, which enhance the care provided by the hospital. In 2021, Northern Light Inland and Northern Light Continuing Care, Lakewood employees engaged in our community by volunteering on local boards, committees and projects that helped contribute to a vital community.
Part VI, Line 6 - Affilated Health Care SystemThe 2019 Maine Shared Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) was conducted by Northern Light Health in collaboration with several member/affiliated hospitals, non-affiliated hospitals as well as public health and community organizations across the state. The Maine Shared CHNA informs initiatives to promote community health across the system as well as within each member hospitals local service area. Each member hospital adopted a local implementation strategy referred to as a Community Health Strategy and annual community health improvement plans, tailored to meet local needs.Northern Light Inland Hospital has been part of Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems d/b/a Northern Light Health (NLH) since 1998. As part of EMHS, we conduct Shared Community Health Needs Assessment in collaboration with several member/affiliated hospitals and many public health and community organizations across eight Maine counties.

If we measure a community's greatness by the compassionate actions of its members, then we are truly surrounded by greatness and there is much to celebrate. Our culture of caring begins with caring for one another and extends to the care we deliver to people across Maine in the many communities we serve. But if the pandemic has taught us anything, it's that compassion is evident not only in our excellent staff and community members but also in our community partners. Your generosity and innovation have helped extend our reach in living up to our promise to make healthcare work for the people we serve. Our list of community heroes is long, and this Annual Report only features a handful of the people and organizations who have made an important difference during a challenging time. We hope you find these stories as empowering and inspirational as we do.Timothy J. Dentry, MBA President & CEO Northern Light HealthKathy Corey Board ChairNorthern Light HealthA vaccine for everyone AccessOn a sunny July day, a brightly colored RV emblazoned with the faces of children from across the world sits parked outside the Luca Caf in Arundel. The Luca Caf is a quaint seasonal restaurant with Asian-inspired food that has covered outdoor seating and picnic tables. Standing beside some tables and folding chairs in front of the RV, Peggy Akers, RN, and Mary Robbins, RN, two Northern Light Home Care & Hospice nurses, administer doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to a diverse and willing group of peoplea group which might not have been vaccinated if not for the convenience of this mobile clinic and all the community partners that made it possible. There are populations that we are just not reaching. People who are undocumented, who would feel unsafe coming to a mass vaccination clinic where they might otherwise be asked to present identification or insurance information. We as an organization make it our mission that the only requirements for getting vaccinated are, are you a human being and do you want to be vaccinated? shares Robbins.Their partners for this clinic are Maine Community Action Partners, the New England Arab American Organization, Maine Association for New Americans, Maine Access Immigrant Network (MAIN), and the Maine Department of Health and Human Services COVID-19 Community Support Team. Chanbopha (Chan) Himm is also a member of the support team and co-founder of the Cambodian Community Association and Unified Asian Communities. Her mission is to help get people in underserved populations vaccinated. As some Asian Americans show up, she speaks with them in their native language and offers assurances. She has a welcoming smile and charisma, which seems to make her a natural fit for this kind of work. "They couldn't ask for a better place to get vaccinated," explains Himm, "because they've got the nurses here that care so much about them. And then they've got their cultural brokersthe ones doing the translations, the community leaders standing right behind them and letting them know that they're going to be okay. What more can someone ask for?" Himm is not just offering lip service when she compliments the Northern Light Home Care & Hospice nurses doing the clinics. Both Akers and Robbins have been doing this kind of work for a long time with community partners and have earned praise for their compassion and sensitivity. "I feel so lucky in a way to be part of this journey. Doing these vaccines has just been such a gift," shares Akers. If you would like to learn more about the COVID-19 vaccine or get vaccinated, please visit https://covid.northernlighthealth.org/Good health is good businessResiliencyA light summer breeze comes off the Union River as customers gather on picnic tables shaded by umbrellas on the lawn outside the Union River Lobster Pot restaurant in Ellsworth. They are hoisting glasses of cold draft beer as servers carry out plates piled high with steamed clams and boiled lobster garnished with leafy green parsley and lemon wedges. To restaurant owner Brian Langley, the summer of 2021 looks a lot different than the summer of 2020. It's a lot closer to normal, at least in terms of business volume. "We've seen a real influx of customers looking to escape to Maine from wherever they were in the country. They had to get out, and they wanted to go someplace safe. Maine was the epitome of both of those things, says Langley. But as normal as things look, it was a challenge to get here. Like many business owners, Langley was dealing with so many unknowns. How could he keep employees and customers safe from COVID-19? How could he overcome supply chain issues, staffing shortages, social distancing requirements, and government mandates? For these questions and more, Langley turned to Northern Light Health which had started offering business-to-business webinars via the Zoom video conferencing portal. "We call these webinars Good Health is Good Business," explains Carrie Arsenault, MBA, president of Northern Light Beacon Health, which spearheads the webinar series. "We bring experts together from across Northern Light Health and share resources and advice on how to return to business safely for employees, visitors, and customers." As a large employer dealing directly with COVID-19, Northern Light Health had the expertise and resources that business owners needed, with experts in infection prevention, supply chain, finance, and behavioral health, to name a few. "One of the reasons you found me every two weeks watching the webinars was to get an idea of what we would be facing, explains Langley. I looked for trusted information, and there you had it from the horse's mouth. You could ask the doctors and other experts direct questions, and if they didn't know something they acknowledged that. It wasn't curated, it was objective and unbiased" Langley explains. A planning group meets regularly to discuss topics, create presentations, and book panelists. James Jarvis, MD, FAAFP, Physician Leader, Incident Command, Northern Light Health, is a frequent panelist because of his expertise in the COVID-19 response. "Initially, I think they just wanted updates on what healthcare was doing and what was going on in our communities in relation to COVID-19. We realized that we needed to be a voice of science and reason to help mitigate fear. There was so much unknown in the beginning part of this pandemic that we felt an obligation to inform our businesses and communities of what we knew and what we thought was going to happen," explains Dr. Jarvis. Another panelist, Yemaya St. Clair, LCPC, counselor, Northern Light Work Force EAP, was brought in to offer mental health advice to business owners. Many recognized that their employees, and in some cases customers, were struggling to cope with the new normal of the pandemic. "Early on, when the masking mandates went into effect, we provided coaching around de-escalation, to help people stay calm. We also provided resiliency training and ways to help manage stress," shares St. Clair. For Brian Langley, valuable advice helped him navigate an uncertain time, helped his employees cope, and provided current information to help adapt his business. He used the pandemic as an opportunity to try new menu items and offerings, such as outdoor seating. Eventually, Langley took what he learned and shared it with other business owners as a webinar panelist. "What can I do that's different, and how do I survive? I think that's what I wanted to share," explains Langley. Arsenault says Northern Light Beacon Health will continue offering the webinars as long as there is a community need. "We are thrilled to be part of the solution to create healthy employees, healthy businesses and, as a result, healthy communities."Ladders of opportunityPart 1 DiversityWhen Ngozi Christopher, RN, BSN, first started working at Northern Light Eastern Ma
