| Explanation | IFF is exempt from federal income taxes under the provisions of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and applicable state law, except for taxes pertaining to unrelated business income, if any. In accordance with the accounting standard on Accounting for Uncertainty in Income Taxes, IFF addresses the determination of whether tax benefits claimed or expected to be claimed on a tax return should be recorded in the consolidated financial statements. Under this guidance, IFF may recognize the tax benefit from an uncertain tax position only if it is more likely than not that the tax position will be sustained on examination by taxing authorities, based on the technical merits of the position. Examples of tax positions include the tax-exempt status of IFF and various positions related to the potential sources of unrelated business taxable income. | Explanation | IFF maintains records on how and the amount it passes through funds to third parties by maintaining copies of the wire transfers or cancelled checks. Some of the source grant proposals or agreements contain the amount and/or who the third party is to receive the funds. Some grants require IFF to request applications from third parties of their needs or to make sure they meet the requirements that the source grantor defined. Some of the state/federal grants require a selective bid process in which the third party is identified and IFF must submit documentation to be reimbursed by the funding agency for expenses incurred by the third party. IFF then passes through the funds once it receives them. In all cases, the grantee must follow up with the IFF with a report or documentation that details the use of the grant funds.
