DescNova Southeastern University goes beyond its primary mission by reaching out to the community with diverse service programs and community-based research. NSU is 1 of only 360 colleges and universities nationally selected for the Carnegie Foundation's Community Engagement Classification, and 1 of only 59 colleges and universities to hold both community engaged and high research activity designations. NSU delivers tangible benefits, including junior kindergarten through doctoral education, physical infrastructure, a professional workforce, employment opportunities, delivery of health care and law services in Broward and Miami-Dade counties, lifelong learning options, community-service initiatives, and public access to cultural and scholarly experiences. NSU continues to grow its academic and scientific research activities. More than 200 research projects are currently under way at NSU, including studies on cardiovascular disease, anti-cancer therapies, chronic fatigue syndrome, autism, coral reef restoration, stem cells, and wildlife DNA forensics, among other subjects. The Center for Collaborative Research (CCR) consists of 215,000 square feet of research and collaborative spaces. This project is registered with the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and is the first NSU facility to achieve a LEED certification level of Gold. The facility houses core facilities including Genomics, Flow Cytometry, Cell Therapy and Imaging. The CCR is expected to bring multiple disciplines together, with students and NSU faculty members partnering with professionals and organizations outside of the NSU community-furthering cutting-edge research and developing technologies that will benefit the global community. With respect to research initiatives, NSU continued steady progress in fiscal 2021, with numerous multiyear awards addressing topics of national significance. For instance, Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine's Institute for Neuro-Immune Medicine was awarded a $4.4 million federal contract by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to study the post-viral phase of the COVID-19 virus. The College of Dental Medicine received a $1.8 million award from the National Institutes of Health to study a vaccine strategy related to preventing the transmission of HIV/AIDS and other pathogens and a $1.4 million award related to new models of oral health care designed to improve services to vulnerable populations and underserved areas. The Halmos College of Arts and Sciences received a $1.3 million award to identify and study the dynamic processes that govern motion of water and to understand the variability of the resulting internal wave fields. The College of Computing and Engineering received a $1.2 million award to increase capacity to be responsive to the needs of degree-seeking native and transfer students, especially those who are Hispanic and low-income, leading to increased enrollment, persistence, graduation, and transfer rates.Desc

Form And Line ReferenceFormAndLineReferenceDescExplanationExplanationTxt
Part III, Line 1a:The NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale acquires art for its collection through purchase or gift. As permitted by SFAS 116 (ASC 958), accounting for contributions received and contributions made, the Museum does not include its collection items as assets in the consolidated statement of financial position. Accordingly, no value has been assigned to the Museum's art collection. The University's policy requires any proceeds from sales of collection items to be used to acquire other items for the collection. Proceeds from the sale of collection items and expenditures for collection items purchased are reflected in the consolidated statement of activities within other revenues and expenses, respectively.
Part III, Line 4:Nova Southeastern University operates the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale. In service to the public, the mission of the Museum is to actively engage diverse audiences in the appreciation of works of art through innovative exhibitions, education programs, publications, and collection activities. This mission is consistent with the University's exempt educational purpose. Part V, line 1g Col (a): The amounts listed in Part V, Line 1g, include endowment-related pledges receivable. As of June 30, 2021 endowment-related pledges receivable totaled $37.8 million.
Part V, Line 4:The University's endowment consists of approximately 373 individual endowments (which includes both donor restricted endowment funds and funds designated by the board of trustees) which have been set aside and invested primarily for scholarships.
Part X, Line 2:Accounting for Uncertainty in Income Taxes: The University follows the guidance contained in ASC 740, Income Taxes. ASC 740 addresses the accounting for uncertainty in income taxes recognized in an entity's financial statements and prescribes a threshold of more-likely-than-not for recognition and de-recognition of tax positions taken or expected to be taken in a tax return. There were no uncertain tax positions recorded in the consolidated financial statements for fiscal years 2021 and 2020.

Part I, Line 1aSupplemental Compensation Information: Line 1- First class travel- Per the travel policy of Nova Southeastern University, Inc., all travel must be by the most direct or economical route. Higher fares may be reimbursable only when coach accommodations would: (1) require circuitous routing; (2) require travel during unreasonable hours; (3) greatly increase the duration of the flight; (4) result in additional costs which would offset the transportation savings; (5) offer accommodations which are not reasonably adequate for the medical needs of the traveler. These exceptions will require the traveler to submit a letter of approval signed by their Dean or Vice President. When traveling by air, the Board of Trustees have approved the President and his spouse to travel at a First Class fare (or business class if it is not available), while taking care to use available coupons, rewards or certificates when feasible. Line 2-Travel for companions -Per the travel policy of Nova Southeastern University, Inc., when a spouse or dependent accompanies the employee, the University will pay for only the travel costs of the employee. Occasionally, spouses of faculty and staff are asked to travel on University business. Spouse travel reimbursement by the University requires approval by a Dean or Officer, or their authorized representative. If the business purpose of the spousal travel is not properly documented, it will be taxed to the employee. Line 3- Tax gross-up payments may occasionally be provided to university employees and in those instances are included in taxable compensation. Line 5-A housing allowance is provided to the president of the University. This allowance is fully taxable to the recipient. Line 7-The university pays for club dues on behalf of certain executives, some of which are treated as taxable to the employee and included in his or her compensation.
Part I, Line 5Steven Kaltman received an incentive bonus payment that was calculated as a percentage of net collections from dental clinic activity. Amounts paid are shown in Schedule J, Part II, Column(BII).
Part I, Line 7George L. Hanbury received a bonus for exceptional job performance as reported in Schedule J, Part II, Column(BII).
