DescEducation:Family Literacy InitiativeFriends of Liberia (FOL) launched the Family Literacy Initiative (FLI) in November 2015 after a survey by FOL members indicated that the most significant unmet educational need in Liberia was early childhood education. More specifically, the preparation of preschoolers in literacy and other basic skills needed to thrive in school. The Family Literacy Initiative (FLI) is a partnership between FOL, The WE-CARE Foundation, HIPPY International, and new this year Comic Relief, USA. FLI has two components: the HIPPY program and the adult literacy program (ALP). The HIPPY program provides training, educational activity packets, and other resources to the parents to help improve their childs literacy and readiness for school. The training and resources are delivered through home visitors, which WE-CARE employs. The ALP is a series of literacy classes using a curriculum designed to supplement the HIPPY curriculum for those parents and and other adults who want to improve their literacy as they help their children improve their readiness for school. FOL continues to work with WE-CARE to contextualize curriculum appropriate for adults and children in Liberia. HIPPY is based on the philosophy that learning begins at home, and parents or guardians are a childs first teacher. Each week, home visitors meet with parents to train them to teach literacy to their children effectively. The home visitors demonstrate the weeks lessons, teach parents strategies for improving their childrens reading skills, and use role-plays to train parents to teach their children interactively. The parents then teach their children by reading with them and asking them questions about the readings. FOLs Education Sub-committee works monthly to support the efforts of WE-CARE in evaluating and monitoring all these educational components, as well as supporting them financially as much as possible.Desc

DescSmall GrantsSupported Small Grants There were two awardees for Small Grants in 2021: Look for moreinformation about these two programs on our website at www.FOL.org and to learn more aboutthe application process. Kpoma Womans Inc. ($3,000). Pengai Village Financial LiteracyInitiative, Bong County Pengai Village is a community of smallholder farmers who faceenormous hardships including food insecurity, health issues and a high illiteracy rate. Alack of income diversification is a key factor in a cycle of poverty that disproportionatelyimpacts women. The objective of the Pengai Village Financial Literacy Initiative is toimprove outcomes for rural women farmers and their families. Its vision is to advance theeconomic prospects for the women, which will then improve the standard of living for familiesand the wellbeing of rural children. The key focus was to increase access to financialeducation and encourage business development among women of the village. The sponsoring non-profit organization, Kpoma Women, works to improve crop production and sustainability with women farmers in this area of Bong County, and decided to focus on this project afterdiscussions with the women of the village on their needs. They indicated they were very interested in starting their own small businesses to alleviate food insecurity and to pay for their childrens school fees. (For more details, please see www.kpomawomen.org) The project served 63 participants who are members of Pengai Womens Farming Cooperative. The womens ages ranged from 17 to 50 years old. Most of the women in the group have no formal education, so the training was developed to facilitate learning for those with limited literacy skills by using an overhead projector, hands-on learning, and interactive discussions reflecting successful best practices and how to meet challenging experiences. 2. Capacity for Youth$1,850). This three-month project targeted underprivileged women, girls, and disabled young people residing in the Soul Clinic community of Montserrado County. It taught them skills in types of hair styling and cosmetology, making beans bags (bead purses), and soap production as means to lead to financial independence. The project empowered 158 persons, and the project is still ongoing. Funds raised from the sale of bean bags and soap production arebeing used to purchase additional materials. Also, teaching pastry making (doughnuts, short bread, cake) has been added as a result of the funds raised.Desc

DescCovid ReliefA special Covid-19 campaign was launched among FOL members and funds were used to send the first shipment of oxygen regulators and 2,000 masks to ten Monrovia area hospitals. A partnership was then forged with Global Health Ministries that allowed two shipments of much needed Covid-19 supplies to clinics and hospitals in Liberia. The shipments were launched in 2021 and received in Liberia in 2022. The Liberian Health Team was helpful in getting these supplies distributed.Desc
