DescRosen House, Gardens and Estate - See Schedule OThe Rosen House is a Mediterranean revival villa at the center of the Caramoor campus. In recognition of the unsurpassed quality and great quantity of European period rooms incorporated in the house, Caramoor was recognized as nationally significant on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011. Built in the 1930s, the Rosen House now serves as a concert venue, museum, and archive. In 2021, we updated and modified many of the rooms in the southwest wing of the Rosen House. We added signage, updated lighting and displays, and relocated some of art to help our visitors have a sense of the foundations of Caramoor and of the Rosens as patrons of music and the arts. We also redesigned some of the rooms in the New Wing, the area that was added by the Rosens' daughter, Anne Bigelow Rosen, in 1968, after Lucie Rosen died. These rooms now display Lucie's theremin, along with signage describing Lucie's influence and support for the electronic instrument.Desc

Part III, Line 4:The historic Rosen House, with its period rooms and collections, is open to the public for tours. In addition, the archival materials are a great source of humanities research in a number of fields. One example is the documentation relating to the Rosens' patronage of Leon Theremin and championing of his early electronic music instrument. This material has been a source of study for theremin researchers, including Robert Moog, who began building theremins in the 1950s as a high school student and later went on to design the Moog synthesizer and Albert Glinsky, Theremin's biographer and the author of Theremin: Ether Music and Espionage. The Rosen House collection demonstrates a tremendous breadth of art objects, furniture, and archival material. The art and furniture encompass over 1,000 cataloged objects, including European furniture from the 16th-19th centuries; European medieval and Renaissance paintings, sculpture, textiles, and decorative objects; and Asian statuary. There are also approximately 100 light fixtures and decorative elements by Edward F. Caldwell and Company dating from the 1930s. Other categories include photographs, textiles, early 20th-century costumes, and musical instruments. In addition, there is a wealth of ephemeral material relating to the Rosens, the development of the Caramoor campus, and the establishment of public performances. Objects from the collection displayed in the Music Room of the Rosen House, including a wooden 16th-century Italian ceiling, French and Swiss 16th-century stained glass, Renaissance tapestries, and 17th-century furniture, create an incomparable setting for chamber music performances. The collection also provides primary material for Caramoor's arts-in-education programs. In programs such as The Renaissance and The Middle Ages at Caramoor and Chinese Arts & Culture, students participate in guided tours and are encouraged to use the collection as inspiration for their own writing, drawing, and music-making.
Part V, Line 4:Caramoor maintains various donor-restricted endowment funds and board designated quasi-endowment funds whose purpose is to provide long term support for its charitable programs.
Part X, Line 2:Caramoor recognizes the effect of income tax positions only if those positions are more likely than not to be sustained. Management has determined that Caramoor had no uncertain tax positions that would require financial statement recognition or disclosure.

Form 990, Part I, Line 1:Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts is a destination for exceptional music, captivating programs, spectacular gardens, innovative sound art, and historical perspective. Located on an 81-acre campus in Katonah, NY, Caramoor annually presents approximately 55 live music performances in a wide range of genres. Audiences are invited to explore the lush grounds, tour the historic Rosen House, enjoy a pre-concert picnic, and discover beautiful music in the relaxed settings of the Venetian Theater, Spanish Courtyard, Music Room, and magnificent gardens. Caramoor also trains the next generation of classical musicians and provides music-based arts education to local schoolchildren. Through its public programs and community events, Caramoor serves 40,000 people each year. The organization, founded by Lucie and Walter Rosen, was established as a 501c3 non-profit arts center in 1946 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2021, 8,988 people visited Caramoor's campus to enjoy the grounds and listen to music. In addition, more than 7,000 people used the campus through facility rentals, special events, and administrative functions. Another 428 people participated in virtual events via online platforms.
Form 990, Schedule O Narratives:The information contained in the return is relevant through December 31, 2021 and does not reflect any activity in 2022. See Form 990, Part XII, Line 2c narrative, paragraph II for events subsequent to year end.
Form 990, Part III, Line 4a:Caramoor continues to uphold our mission of presenting innovative and dynamic musical performances, mentoring young professional musicians, and providing educational programs despite the challenges posed by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic during 2021. While some of our scheduling and repertoire-related details shifted in response to health and safety concerns, 2021 featured a mix of live and livestreamed music. Several concerts featured question-and-answer sessions with the artists moderated by Caramoor's Artistic Director Kathy Schuman and we produced a series of "Caramoor Conversations" that offered in-depth discussions with artists, composers, and scholars. We also arranged for limited tours of our gardens and grounds, which include Sonic Innovations, a series of site-specific sound art installations. The centerpiece of this year's exhibition was in"C", a new interactive sculpture by the artist Trimpin. Caramoor's 2021 Spring Season presented 10 concerts from the Music Room, livestreamed and with reduced capacity seating. Our Summer Season included 33 in-person concerts, held outdoors in the Venetian Theater or on Friends Field. Our Fall Season featured eight in-person concerts and a series of live holiday musicales and teas. In 2021 we also resumed tours of our historic Rosen House, which featured updated signage and displays, including a new emphasis on Lucie Rosen's theremin. Two concerts were canceled due to health and safety concerns. Travel restrictions stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic prevented violinist Pekka Kuusisto from entering the U.S., forcing us to cancel his concert with composer/pianist Nico Muhly. We also canceled a November 7th concert with the Callisto Quartet after a member reported a positive COVID-19 antigen test. The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and trumpeter Wynton Marsalis hosted Caramoor's Opening Night Gala on June 18. Later in the season, our annual Jazz Festival featured Sean Jones, Endea Owens, Elexa Taratino, Charles Turner, and more. Other concerts in collaboration with Jazz at Lincoln Center included Catherine Russell, Isaiah J. Thompson Quartet, Shenel Jones, and the Brianna Thomas Band. Classical and Early Music concerts included performances by Richard Goode, the Verona Quartet with pianist David Fung, the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, and Apollo's Fire. Curt Ebersole and the Westchester Symphonic Winds returned for their annual Independence Day Pops & Patriots concert, which featured soprano Candice Hoyes and baritone Jorell Williams. The English Concert, led by the harpsichord by Harry Bicket, performed an all-Vivaldi program; Flutist Emi Ferguson and the ensemble Ruckus performed Bach, and pianist Stephen Hough performed Chopin and Schumann. Vocal music included performances by bass-baritone Dashon Burton, the a cappella vocal quartet New York Polyphony, The Crossing, and Chanticleer. The annual American Roots Music Festival featured The War and Treaty, the Watkins Family Hour, and more. Singer-songwriters Natu Camara and Joan Osborne both made Caramoor debuts. Other Roots concerts, presented in collaboration with City Winery, included Sarah Jarosz Son Little and Raul Midon. Guitarist Sharon Isbin joined the Indian sarod virtuoso Amjad Ali Khan and his sons Ayaan Ali Bangash and Amaan Ali Bagash for a concert called "Strings for Peace." Caramoor's casual "Concerts on the Lawn" series included Ljova and the Kontraband, Nathan & the Zydeco Cha Chas, Flor de Toloache, Della Mae, and Shenel Johns, while our "Beginner's Ear" series, which combines music with mindfulness, featured performers on three Sundays in late summer. We also presented a special outdoor three-stage music and dance celebration of Da de Los Muertos on October 24. In collaboration with Mexico Beyond Mariachi, the afternoon included several traditional and regional dance performances around Caramoor's grounds, leading to a Friends Field event with all the artists. Caramoor continued our commitment to new music this summer with the world premieres of new Caramoor commissions from Saad Haddad and Dominic Shodekeh Talifero, and a new fanfare by Valerie Coleman performed by the Orchestra of St. Luke's conducted by Tito Muoz with violinist Tai Murray. U.S. premieres included works from Natalie Dietterich, Kate Moore, and Hilary Purrington. New York premieres featured important new works by Douglas J. Cuomo; two major experiential, site-specific works by John Luther Adams, and a wealth of music by other living composers, including Jason Eckardt, Philip Glass, Vijay Iyer, Tania Len, Jessie Montgomery, Angelica Negron, Arvo Part, Joan Tower, Julia Wolfe, and Ayanna Woods. Featured artists included Alarm Will Sound, Chanticleer, JIJI, PUBLIQuartet, So Percussion, Conrad Tao, The Crossing, The Knights, and the resident Orchestra of St. Luke's. Caramoor's 2021 site-specific work featured John Luther Adam's Ten Thousand Birds, which was written to be performed within Caramoor's expansive outdoor setting. Based on the songs of birds that are native to, or migrate through, the area in which the piece is performed, Adams' piece explores the connections between nature and music. In place of last year's canceled 90th-birthday concert for Stephen Sondheim, Broadway stars Betsy Wolfe, Scarlett Strallen, Bryce Pinkham and Ben Davis celebrated the Tony-winner's 91st birthday with a concert in June. In the fall, Broadway star Kate Baldwin performed cabaret in the Music Room.
Form 990, Part III, Line 4aMentoring The development of emerging artists is central to Caramoor's mission and woven into much of our programming. Through our mentoring programs, we identify, train, and promote the next generation of vocal and instrumental artists. In 2021, 14 young musicians participated. This year's Schwab Vocal Rising Stars program featured four young singers and a pianist selected for a weeklong residency at Caramoor. After a week of daily coaching, rehearsals, and workshops, the group performed a French-themed concert. Developed in collaboration with the New York Festival of Song (NYFOS), and led by Artistic Director Steven Blier and associate director Benedicte Jourdois, the concert featured soprano Nicoletta Berry, mezzo-soprano Erin Wagner, tenor Aaron Crouch, baritone Samuel Kidd, and pianist Gracie Francis. The Evnin Rising Stars pairs distinguished artists with emerging instrumentalists for a week-long residency. Activities include rehearsals, coaching, and performances of works from the heart of the chamber music repertoire. At the end of the residency, the musicians perform in the Music Room. This year, Guest Artistic Director Marcie Rosen, a longtime member of the Mendelssohn String Quartet, and violist Daniel Phillips of the Orion Quartet mentored five young instrumentalists (Nathan Chan, Tanner Menees, Claire Bourg, Janice Carissa, and Stephanie Zyzak) in a concluding concert of masterworks by Mozart, Bridge, and Schumann. This year's Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence, the Callisto Quartet, began its residency in Fall 2020 and, due to the COVID-19 health crisis, extended through 2021. During their residency, the Callisto's performed all six of Bartk's string quartets with a performance of Nos. 2, 3, and 5 in April 2021. Later in the year, they premiered Saad Haddad's String Quartet No. 2, a new Caramoor commission. The most recent addition to Caramoor's innovative "String Quartet Library for the 21st Century" initiative, for which 22 new works have been commissioned to date. The Thalea String Quartet, a previous Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence during the 2019-20 season, returned in 2021 to present a program of contemporary music, including a Caramoor-commissioned world premiere of The Red Book, by Paola Prestini. Schools Programs and Community Engagement Since 1974, Caramoor has provided students with arts enrichment opportunities that use our exceptional facilities, visiting artists, and dedicated staff, while meeting New York State education standards. Caramoor's school programs features on-campus workshops that bring students to Caramoor and a music literacy unit that sends our musicians to local schools. This year we were forced by COVID-19 health concerns to pause our traditional field trips with local schools. During this time, we continued with plans to completely revise our school programs and develop a comprehensive community engagement strategy. After a year-long assessment that began in 2020, we hired a full-time Director of School Programs and Community Engagement, Adina Williams, who began work in summer 2021. On October 24, 2021, we piloted a free community event designed to integrate educational components and partnership opportunities into a family-friendly public concert, which was held outdoors on Friends Field. The event, Da de Los Muertos, attracted an estimated audience of 1,300, including three new community partners: The Boys and Girls Club of Northern Westchester, The Katonah Museum of Art, and INTEMPO, a community music school based in Stamford, CT. Our music literacy program, Student Strings, connected Caramoor's Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence, the Callisto Quartet, with approximately 150 students from 10 schools for in-person and virtual sessions.

Covered employees are senior employees and other employees who have a decision making role in hiring or contracting. Each new trustee is advised of the policy and furnished a disclosure statement upon undertaking the duties of such office. When any conflict of interest may be involved in a transaction requiring action by the Board of Trustees or committee of the Board, the interested person shall call it to the attention of the Board of Trustees or such committee and the trustee concerned shall not vote on the matter. Moreover, the person having a conflict shall retire from the room in which the Board or committee is meeting and may not participate in the final deliberation or decisions regarding the matter under consideration. However, that person may provide the Board or committee with any and all relevant information before retiring. The minutes of the meeting of the Board or committee shall reflect that the conflict of interest was disclosed and that the interested person was not present during the final discussion or vote and did not vote. When there is a doubt as to whether a conflict of interest exists, the matter shall be resolved by the Board of Trustees excluding the person whose situation will be discussed. When any conflict of interest may be involved in a matter involving an employee, such employee shall notify the Board of Trustees and the Chief Executive Officer of Caramoor. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15Caramoor has a formal Compensation Committee which annually reviews salaries, bonuses, and benefits for all Caramoor employees. The Committee pays special attention to the positions of CEO, AD, CDO, CFO, and CMO. Annual reviews include an assessment by the employee, the employee's supervisor, and recommendations from the CEO. The CEO also receives a review from the Compensation Committee. Trustees that sit on the Compensation Committee have all signed "conflict of interest" declarations, and do so annually. One of the Co-Chairs of the Committee is one of the leading non-profit recruiters and as such provides meaningful insights on compensation benchmarks. The Committee reviews salaries and compensation for similarly sized arts organizations in the New York area, and nationally, and uses this information in their decision making. Minutes of the Committee's deliberations and decisions are forwarded to the CFO to be carried out and filed. The last meeting of the Compensation Committee took place on December 17, 2021.

Form 990, Part XII, Line 2c:Caramoor has a committee that assumes responsibility for the oversight of the audit of its financial statements and selection of an independent accountant. This process did not change from the prior year.
Form 990, Part I, Line 6:Staffing In May 2021, Caramoor welcomed Edward J. Lewis, III as President and Chief Executive Officer. He has over two decades of nonprofit management and fundraising experience in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area and beyond. Prior to joining Caramoor, Lewis served as Vice Chancellor for Advancement at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. He has an extensive background as a violist, with a Bachelor of Music degree from Northwestern University and a Master of Music degree from the University of Michigan. He completed his doctoral program post-graduate studies at the University of Maryland School of Music, where he studied chamber music with the Guarneri String Quartet. Volunteers Through their generous commitment of time, enthusiasm, and expertise, Caramoor benefits from the contributions of volunteers throughout the year. In a typical year, the number is determined by the scope of Caramoor's presenting activities and educational programs, in addition to the availability of the volunteers themselves. The majority of volunteers act as ushers at Caramoor's year-round music presentations. They are often the public face of Caramoor, acting as greeters, helping audience members to their seats, and helping to ensure the visiting public's safety and comfort. They also provide guidance during public tours of the Rosen House as well as performing clerical duties and undertaking cataloging projects. In 2021, many of these activities were limited due to COVID-19 health and safety restrictions, resulting in participation by fewer volunteers than in previous years. Board of Trustees Caramoor's Board of Trustees is responsible for the organization's governance, long-term strategy, and fiduciary oversight, while the senior staff is responsible for the day-to-day operation of Caramoor, including management and recommending annual budgets to the board. The board and staff work collaboratively in setting priorities for the organization's future. Caramoor's 29 board members come from diverse backgrounds and bring a wide range of professional expertise. By serving on various committees, including Finance, Building and Grounds, Marketing, Development, and more, our board members act as fully engaged stewards of Caramoor's mission. One hundred percent of the board participates personally by making major contributions to support annual operating costs as well as fundraising for Caramoor. Additionally, individual board members support the organization through the establishment of endowment funds and contributions toward capital purchases. Advisory Council Established in 2013, the Advisory Council is comprised of members who have demonstrated a deep commitment to furthering Caramoor's mission and impact. The group, comprised of 26 members in 2021, formally meets twice a year, once with the Board of Trustees for Caramoor's Annual Meeting, and once on their own. Members also serve as members of committees of the organization, are involved in special initiatives/projects, and in advisory roles to various staff members. Individuals are selected by the Governance Committee from among our dedicated ticket buyers and donors for renewable terms of three years. Some Advisory Council members have moved up to serve on the Board of Trustees after service on the Advisory Council. The engagement of the Advisory Council continues to be an important element of Caramoor's success in engaging the broader community and undertaking a larger volume of initiatives with success.
