DescClimate and Energy - In the Climate and Energy field, EDF focuses on the largest and best opportunities to reduce emissions of climate pollutants such as carbon dioxide and methane. In 2020, EDFs research in the U.S. Permian Basin, the worlds largest oil field, revealed that oil and gas operations there are emitting nearly three times as much methane as previously thought. EDF advocacy helped spur New Mexico, New York and Pennsylvania to propose rules to cut methane pollution. EDF also prompted 15 states, including California and New York, to commit that 30% of medium- and heavy-duty trucks and buses sold in their jurisdictions will be zero emission by 2030; won commitments from Arizona Public Service and Xcel Energy to help realize the goal of a carbon-free electric power sector by 2035; and was a lead partner in legislation that provides a framework for farmers to contribute to, and benefit from, comprehensive climate solutions. In Canada, an EDF proposal to government officials helped lead to a $1.7 billion investment to clean up inactive oil and gas wells and create thousands of jobs. In India, EDF and partners are expanding low carbon development solutions for rural residents, including clean biogas cookstoves, and EDF is advising the state of Bihar on a climate action plan for agriculture that reduces pollution and helps farmers prosper. In China, final preparations to launch the worlds largest carbon market signified, for EDF, the culmination of 30 years of policy and technical work with Chinese regulators. In preparation for the launch, more than 7,000 people trained on market simulation software developed by EDF.Desc

DescEducation - In FY 2020, climate was EDFs single largest area of education, with mailings and online information educating EDF members and the general public about the science of climate change and the needed policy response, as well as other critical environmental issues. Four issues of the quarterly Solutions newsletter were part of this program, both online and in print.Desc

DescECOSYSTEMS EDF develops ways to meet peoples needs for food, water and other natural resources while improving ecosystems. In 2020, EDF teamed up with NASA, the Desert Research Institute and Google to launch OpenET, a web application that will provide farmers and water managers with accurate, timely, satellite-based data on the amount of water that is actually used to grow food. The data will help foster sustainable water use in the western United States, where agriculture is the largest consumer of the water supply, and will later expand to the entire country. EDF also sought to protect homes and businesses threatened by rising seas and more intense storms. Wetlands and floodplains are a critical line of defense against these threats. Building off earlier work in Louisiana, EDF helped secure bipartisan legislation in North Carolina that unlocks millions of dollars to restore such natural defenses. EDF also worked with agricultural partners to promote farming practices that protect communities from floods.Desc

Form And Line ReferencePART II-B, LINE 1:FormAndLineReferenceDesc
ExplanationEnvironmental Defense Fund (EDF) engages in limited amounts of lobbying activities to further its mission to preserve the natural systems on which all life depends. In FY2020, EDF spent a total of $8,933,155, which comprises 4.56% of its total expenditures, on influencing legislation. Consistent with its tax-exempt purpose, EDFs lobbying activities were focused on the protection of the preservation of natural systems on which all life depends. In a year of extraordinary challenges, Environmental Defense Fund has helped spur remarkable progress thanks to our supporters. Together, we advanced environmental protection around the world - even when the world was locked down by the COVID-19 pandemic. EDFs collaborative approach demonstrates the power of understanding diverse perspectives, whether times are good or bad. In 2020, it helped us move forward despite strong political headwinds in the United States. We banded together and persevered despite the challenges faced during a pandemic. We know that healing starts with listening, something EDF will be working on harder than ever in the months and years to come. We pledge to listen and lift the voices of the most harmed by pollution, natural disasters, and climate change to be heard. With environmental progress temporarily blocked in Washington, D.C., EDF found many other ways to help people and nature prosper by: - Prevailing in most court cases against the Trump administration to defend environmental laws. - Mapping air pollution with local groups in hard-hit neighborhoods to show how communities of color are unfairly affected. - Prompting 15 states, including California and New York, that together represent about one-third of the truck market, to commit that 30% of medium- and heavy-duty trucks and buses sold in their jurisdictions will be zero emission by 2030. - MOMS CLEAN AIR FORCE continues with its energy and momentum to the groundswell of climate action to demand action on the environment. Providing testimony before members of the U.S. House of Representatives and demanding 'Justice in Every Breath' for every policy impacting the health and well-being of children. - Working with companies to identify and introduce safer ingredients. - Challenging businesses to slash emissions. Thus far more than 1,500 companies with over $11 trillion in revenue have committed to a net zero future. - Providing farmers with new technology to make the most of precious freshwater supplies. - Securing bipartisan legislation that unlocks millions of dollars to restore natural defenses. - EDF played a major role in developing bipartisan bills on issues like declining limits on greenhouse gases, sustainable agriculture, and clean energy innovation. - The Moving Forward Act that passed the U.S. House incorporates 18 of EDFs policy recommendations. - Reviving imperiled fisheries while improving food supplies and boosting livelihoods around the world. EDF accomplishes its lobbying objectives through both in-house staff and outside consultants, who assist with strategizing and planning, and through grassroots and direct communications. EDFs largest lobby expenditure during FY2020 was a grant of $8.7M provided to Environmental Defense Action Fund (EDAF), the political action partner and affiliated 501(c)(4) organization of EDF. The purpose of the grant was to provide general support for the educational and lobbying activities of EDAF in furtherance of its mission, which is consistent with the shared program objectives of EDF and EDAF. As required by law, EDAF is restricted from using any of the EDF lobby grant funds for political campaign activities under the terms of the grant agreement between EDF and EDAF.ExplanationTxt

ExplanationENVIRONMENTAL DEFENSE FUND, INC.'S ("EDF") HAS A NUMBER OF GRANTS AND OTHER ASSISTANCE IT PROVIDES TO OTHER ENTITIES. THE MAJORITY OF THESE GRANTS ARE TO OTHER ENVIRONMENTAL AND LIKE-MINDED ENTITIES THAT PERFORM WORK ALONGSIDE OF EDF IN THE ACCOMPLISHMENT OF ITS MISSION. EDF MONITORS THE PERFORMANCE OF THE GRANT RECIPIENTS BY WRITTEN REPORTS, SITE VISITS, VERBAL COMMUNICATION AND REVIEW. PARTIAL PAYMENTS ARE TYPICALLY MADE ON A GRANT UNTIL A PATTERN OF PROVEN ACHIEVEMENTS ON OBJECTIVES IS DEMONSTRATED. IN THE END EDF TYPICALLY PREPARES A REPORT TO FUNDING ENTITIES ON THE USE OF GRANT FUNDS BOTH BY ITSELF AND BY ANY GRANT RECIPIENTS.ExplanationTxt

ExplanationENVIRONMENTAL DEFENSE FUND, INC. ("EDF") HAS A NUMBER OF GRANTS AND OTHER ASSISTANCE IT PROVIDES TO OTHER CHARITIES AND QUASI-GOVERNMENTAL ENTITIES IN THE UNITED STATES. THE MAJORITY OF THESE GRANTS ARE TO OTHER ENVIRONMENTAL 501(C)(3) NON-PROFIT ENTITIES THAT PERFORM WORK ALONGSIDE OF EDF IN THE ACCOMPLISHMENT OF ITS MISSION. SOME OF THESE ARE FLOW-THROUGH GRANTS FROM A FUNDING ENTITY OR FOUNDATION THAT SUPPORTS EDFS WORK.
