DescSee Schedule ORenown Regional Medical Center is an accredited, 808-licensed bed, general and acute-care hospital serving communities in Nevada and northeastern California. A not-for-profit hospital offering a full range of medical, diagnostic and ancillary services, Renown Regional provides the only designated Level II Trauma Center between Sacramento and Salt Lake City. It is a teaching hospital for the professional development of the University of Nevada-Reno School of Medicine and the region's healthcare professionals. Renown Regional provides necessary healthcare services regardless of race, creed, sex, gender, national origin, handicap, age or ability to pay. People in our community have access to Renown Regional services in specialties including: cancer, heart, neurosciences, orthopedics, surgery, intensive and emergency care, behavioral health, addiction, healthy aging, healthcare innovation and women's and children's health. Renown Regional is governed by a board of community members, the majority of who live in our primary service area and who are neither employees, independent contractors or family members. Renown Regional extends privileges on its medical staff to all eligible and qualified physicians and allied health professionals. As a non-profit organization, we reinvest every dollar we earn back into the communities we serve, through staffing, technology, treatment, and training to enhance patient care, medical education and research. As part of an integrated health network, Renown Regional provides many services to the community that otherwise would require people travel to other cities to receive care. These programs, services and technology include: a Level II Trauma Center, a pediatric intensive care unit, TomoTherapy High Art System, Varian TrueBeam, biplane angiography, a dedicated PET/CT scanner, a Joint Commission-certified Comprehensive Stroke Center, comprehensive amputee services, a NAEC accredited level III Epilepsy Center, an ABRET-accredited Epilepsy Monitoring Lab, an Intersocietal Commission-accredited Echocardiography Lab, multi-specialty da Vinci Robotic Surgery Program, a Chest Pain Center using the D-SPECT heart camera, and first in the West to implement the Pritikin Intensive Cardiac Rehabilitation program. Renown Regional also offers access to the largest number of clinical research trials in the region. Renown Regional is comprised of the Medical Center and multiple Centers for Advanced Medicine. These house medical specialty and subspecialty practices. In partnership with the 793 physicians on its medical staff, Renown Regional offers more than 40 physician specialties, including cardiac surgery, cardiology, endocrinology, geriatrics, gynecologic oncology, infectious disease, neurosurgery, orthopedics, otolaryngology, pediatric anesthesia, pediatric endocrinology, pediatric gastroenterology, pediatric neurology, pediatric orthopedics, pediatric ophthalmology, pediatric oncology and hematology, perinatology, plastic surgery, psychiatry, pulmonary medicine, radiation therapy, radiology, rheumatology and urology. For the fiscal year ending June 30, 2020, Renown Regional, along with its parent, Renown Health and its subsidiaries, provided more than $195 million in benefit to the community (using community benefit numbers gathered by the Nevada Hospital Association using state-approved criteria to ensure consistency). For a full report on the benefit Renown Health provided to our community as well as our needs assessment and community benefit plan go to www.renown.org/about-us/community.Desc

Renown Regional Medical CenterPart V, Section B, Line 11: Primary Health Priority #1: Mental Health - In FY20, Renown partnered with Communities in Schools and Note-Able Music Therapy Services to reduce depression and suicide among all populations, with a focus on youth.Communities in Schools (CIS) is a national program that operates in local school districts to send staff into schools to link students with services needed for academic achievement. Renown funding expanded programming and services to Desert Skies Middle School, Juniper Elementary School and Traner Middle School. One goal was to have at least 75% improvement in behavior goals, whereas 78% of our case-managed students showed improvement. Another goal was to have at least 75% improvement in academic goals, whereas 91% of case-managed students showed improvement.Note-Able Music Therapy Services (NMTS) provides evidence-based music therapy in group and individual settings to people with chronic and acute health conditions, disabilities, and neurological disorders. Renown funded this project to expand services to individuals dealing with depression, chronic stress, and other mental health issues. NMTS partnered with four community organizations to provide ongoing music therapy groups to participants. NMTS held 198 sessions with 255 unique individuals served. In these sessions participants reported an increase in subjective well-being; a decreased in self-reported level of depression from baseline; a decrease in anxiety scores from baseline; and an improvement in social connectedness (measured as loneliness) scores from baseline.Primary Health Priority #2: Substance Use - In FY20, Renown with Join Together Northern Nevada and Quest Counseling & Consulting provided substance prevention services and education to youth and young adults.Join Together Northern Nevada (JTNN) serves residents in Washoe County to promote substance use awareness, education, and prevention. JTNN is collaborating with the Washoe County School District to implement the evidence-based programming, LifeSkills Training in middle schools. With Renown funding, LifeSkills curriculum was taught to 6 traditional high schools and 2 alternative high schools. 541 students matched by pre/posttest. Students self-reported an average point change of +0.30 increase in knowledge of the impact of media influence; an average point change of +0.80 increase in knowledge of the impact of substance use on physical, mental, and emotional health; and an improvement of self-reported awareness of coping mechanisms, conflict resolution, stress, and anger management skills of +3.495.Quest Counseling & Consulting offers residential and outpatient services to individuals dealing with substance use and mental health issues. Services include comprehensive assessments and screenings, drug testing, crisis intervention and trauma-informed services. Licensed substance abuse and mental health counselors help clients recover from substance use or addiction and neglect of unmet mental health needs. With Renown funding, Quest Increased the number of referrals received from Renown for substance use and mental health counseling and made treatment more accessible to clients. 80% of Renown grant clients demonstrated an improvement in at least two areas of their treatment plan. 61% clients successfully completed alcohol treatment. 73% clients each quarter, reduced alcohol consumption. 85% clients had a reduction in depressive symptoms. 74% clients reported suicidality, 40% had a reduction in symptoms within six months.Primary Health Priority #3: Physical Activity, Nutrition, Weight Physical Activity, Nutrition & Weight - In FY20, Renown and Reno-Sparks Indian Colony have partnered to increase physical activity, improve nutrition, and reduce obesity among all populations. With funding from Renown, Reno-Sparks Indian Colony created the Pathways to Health program. This program aims to reduce barriers to nutrition and physical activity by bringing fresh produce to families of enrolled members and providing free transportation to exercise programs at the Reno-Sparks Tribal Health Center. Since program kickoff in 2018, the Pathways program served 23 households and a total of 56 individuals; household size ranged from one to seven individuals. At the end of the first six-month period, the program was serving 17 households. At end-of-the-program reporting period, the Pathways program serves 20 households of 52 individuals ranging from ages 5-77 years old. Based on community demand, Renown and Washoe County Health District are working to bring fresh, healthy food to sports settings. This is providing athletes, employees and fans the option to choose a healthy snack while they watch sporting events. Renown offers grants to nonprofit youth sports organizations to purchase and offers nutritionist-approved items such as fresh fruit and healthy snack and meal options under 500 calories. Healthy Concessions goals are to increase the number of events where Healthy Concessions items are offered by 10% each year and increase awareness of the benefits of healthy eating among sporting event attendees. Primary Health Priority #4: Chronic Disease, Screenings - In FY20, Renown and Northern Nevada HOPES addressed diabetes screening and prevention by implementing the National Diabetes Prevention Program. In addition, Nevada Tobacco Prevention Coalition was identified as a community partner to address risk factors associated with asthma. It specifically addressed exposure to second-hand smoke. Northern Nevada HOPES is a community health center for medically underserved populations including uninsured patients Medicare, Medicaid, some private insurers and sliding fee scale. HOPES offers integrated medical care and wellness services including adult and pediatric primary care, HIV and Hep C care, adult psychiatry, chronic disease management, wellness and nutrition, behavioral health counseling, substance use counseling, case management, a pharmacy, and more. Renown funds assisted in the training of four trained lifestyle coaches. HOPES launched 13 classes: eight Spanish and five English, 414 referrals from providers, 146 patients enrolled, 92 participated, 47 completed the program. 32% of clients lost 5-7% of their body weight, with an average weight loss of 2.81%. 73% of clients exercised 150 minutes per week and on average patients exercise 110 minutes. 63% of patients participated in at least 3 classes and 51% of those patients completed the program. We received full program recognition.Nevada Tobacco Prevention Coalition and Renown introduced this policy-based initiative to decrease exposure to second-hand tobacco smoke and reduce the prevalence of the negative health outcomes associated with tobacco smoke. This project has engaged and assisted local businesses in Washoe County to support and voluntarily adopt smoke-free workplace policies and will introduce a smoke-free workplace ordinance in a city or county municipality. To date, Nevada Tobacco Prevention Coalition conducted an economic impact study of comprehensive clean indoor air in Northern Nevada workplaces and assessed current attitudes regarding smoke-free workplaces.Identified Needs Not Being Addressed - We believe our plan will allow us to start addressing some of the most pressing health needs in our community, but we recognize that we will not be able to tackle every issue we would like. The five issues that will not be addressed are crime and violent-related behaviors, injury prevention, maternal and child health, environmental health, sexual health and infectious disease and immunizations. Most of these topics didn't rank among the top two-thirds of the 12 ranked health needs. Although these important health needs weren't funded by Renown Community Benefits in this current plan, we encourage other community partners who may be better suited to address these topics to fund and guide evidence-based programs in these areas.

Part I, Line 3c:In addition to the federal poverty guidelines, we also consider eligibility for state assistance programs and homelessness or no documentation to establish indigence as factors in determining eligibility. All patients are expected to make a financial contribution towards their bill and are subject to pay at least a minimal co-payment so technically no free care is provided.
Part I, Line 6a:The organization's community benefit report is contained in a report prepared by its parent corporation, Renown Health.Part I, Line 5c: The organization budgets the amount of charity care expected in the next year but does not use that estimate as a constraint on the amount of charity care provided.
Part I, Line 7:Charity care expense was converted to cost on line 7a using the cost-to-charge ratio derived from Worksheet 2. Unreimbursed Medicaid and other unreimbursed costs on line 7b was calculated using the cost-to-charge ratio derived from Worksheet 2. Community health improvement, health professions education, subsidized health services, research and cash and in-kind contributions on lines 7e, 7f, 7g, and 7i are reported from the organization's records.
Part I, Ln 7 Col(f):The amount of bad debt expense removed from total expenses to determine the percentage was $76,708,689.
Part III, Line 2:The amount included on Line 2 reflects the amount at charges reported in the financial statements.
Part III, Line 4:The footnote to the audited financial statements that addresses bad debt is on page 17 of the attached audit financial statements.
Part III, Line 8:The costing methodology for Line 7 uses the ratio of cost to charges from the FY20 as filed by the Medicare cost report.
Part III, Line 9b:Patients in the process of qualifying for state or local indigent programs or the organization's charity program are indicated with a particular payor class/status in the patient accounting system. The patient is not subject to collection efforts while in those classes/statuses.
Part VI, Line 2:Explanation: The organization reviews the current demographic information of the population it serves and the impact those demographics have on the health needs of the community. See explanation 4 for a description of the community. While the demographics start to tell the story of community health needs, Renown Health also consults with community partners and draws from state and local government, non-profits, and school district data sources to assess healthcare needs in the community. Renown Health also used data from the Washoe County Health District to identify health care needs and barriers in its service area. Renown Health's Community Benefit Committee spearheads the development of an annual community needs assessment and corresponding community benefit plan, and oversees the tracking and reporting of community benefit activities. The committee oversees the development or updating of a community needs assessment, and from that assessment develops a community benefit plan that prioritizes and identifies community needs that the organization can support with its finite resources. The needs assessment and community benefit plan then go before the Renown Health Board for review and approval on behalf of all Renown organizations. The needs assessment and the community benefit plan are posted to the organization's website at www.renown.org/about-us/community.
Part VI, Line 3:The organization educates patients on assistance eligibility by posting information on its website regarding its financial assistance program and whenever situations indicate that the patient may be unable to pay for services. The organization has a dedicated Patient Financial Assistance department that works with uninsured patients to establish eligibility for a state or local program. For those that do not qualify for a state or local program, they will refer the patient to the organization's charity care process.
Part VI, Line 4:Washoe County is located in the northwest corner of Nevada and has a population of 471,519 as of June 2019 according to the US Census Bureau. According to the US Census Bureau, the population in the Washoe County area is 50.5% male and 49.5% female. Reno-Sparks unemployment currently is estimated to be at 8.7% as of June 2020 due to the national pandemic.
Part VI, Line 5:See Schedule O, Part III, Line 4a for a description of how the organization furthers its exempt purpose by promoting the health of the community.
Part VI, Line 6:Renown Regional Medical Center is an accredited, 808-licensed bed, general and acute-care hospital serving communities in Nevada and northeastern California. For a full report on the benefit Renown Health provided to our community as well as our needs assessment and community benefit plan go to www.renown.org/about-us/community.
