EDUCATION SPONSORSHIPS PROGRAM WE SPONSOR STUDENTS FROM RURAL KENYA, TANZANIA AND ETHIOPIA TO ACHIEVE THEIR DREAMS OF FINISHING THEIR SCHOOLING. SO FAR THE PROGRAM HAS SUPPORTED 33 STUDENTS AND MANY OF THEM HAVE BECOME FORCES FOR POSITIVE CHANGE IN THEIR COMMUNITIES. FOR EXAMPLE: SAMMY LESEITA WAS ONE OF THE PUPILS IN THE FIRST CLASSROOMS WE BUILT AT KIPSING ACADEMY IN SAMBURU COUNTY, NORTHERN KENYA. WITH OUR SPONSORSHIP HELP, HE WENT ON TO EARN A MASTER'S DEGREE IN INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION POLICY FROM HARVARD, AND HE IS NOW A POWERFUL FORCE FOR POSITIVE CHANGE WORKING AS DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION FOR THE NORTHERN RANGELANDS TRUST. THE NORTHERN RANGELANDS TRUST SUPPORTS 39 COMMUNITY CONSERVANCIES ACROSS NORTHERN AND COASTAL KENYA TO GOVERN THEIR WILD SPACES, IDENTIFY AND LEAD DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS AND BUILD SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIES LINKED TO CONSERVATION. IN 2020 10 STUDENTS WERE SPONSORED$10,434Yes (X)$10,434
KITEFU SECONDARY SCHOOL PROJECT KITEFU SECONDARY SCHOOL IS A GOVERNMENT SCHOOL ON THE EDGE OF ARUSHA NATIONAL PARK IN TANZANIA. IT CURRENTLY HAS AROUND 300 STUDENTS. HOWEVER, THE SCHOOL BUILDINGS HAVE BEEN LEFT UNFINISHED AND ARE MISSING THINGS SUCH AS WINDOWS, CEILINGS AND PROPER BLACKBOARDS. THIS GRANT IS TO FINISH THREE SETS OF CLASSROOM BLOCKS SO THAT THE STUDENTS HAVE A SAFE AND CONDUCIVE SPACE TO LEARN. IT WILL ALSO REDUCE HUMAN-WILDLIFE CONFLICT BECAUSE THE CLASSROOMS WILL BE SECURE AT NIGHT SO THAT ANIMALS SUCH AS SNAKES CANNOT GET INTO THEM$5,000Yes (X)$5,000
EMPAKASI GREEN VALLEY COMMUNITY SCHOOL PROJECT EMPAKASI GREEN VALLEY COMMUNITY SCHOOL IS ON THE EDGE OF NAIROBI NATIONAL PARK. THE SCHOOL WAS RECENTLY FORMED BECAUSE THE NEAREST GOVERNMENT SCHOOL WAS MORE THAN 10KM AWAY, WHICH WAS TOO FAR FOR THE YOUNGEST MEMBERS OF THIS COMMUNITY TO WALK. IT WAS ALSO A DANGEROUS WALK BECAUSE OF WILDLIFE FROM THE PARK. THE NAIROBI NATIONAL PARK IS HOME TO 100 MAMMAL SPECIES INCLUDING BUFFALO, GIRAFFE, LION, LEOPARD, BABOON, ZEBRA, WILDEBEEST, AND CHEETAH AND 400 MIGRATORY AND ENDEMIC BIRD SPECIES. THANKS TO OUR DONORS THE SCHOOL'S FIRST TWO PERMANENT CLASSROOMS WERE BUILT AND FURNISHED IN 2019. THIS HAS CEMENTED THE SCHOOL'S PLACE IN THIS COMMUNITY AND IT HAS REDUCED THE POTENTIAL FOR HUMAN-WILDLIFE CONFLICT IN THIS AREA. CURRENTLY, THE SCHOOL HAS AROUND 40 STUDENTS IN PRE-PRIMARY AND GRADES 1, 2, 3. THIS LITTLE SCHOOL IS SAVING LIVES, REDUCING HUMAN-WILDLIFE CONFLICT AND BRINGING HOPE TO THIS COMMUNITY. OUR MOST RECENT EXPENDITURE IS TO HELP THE SCHOO$4,040Yes (X)$4,040

FORM 990EZ PART V LINE 33The Foundation started 3 new projects: Sand River Elephant Corridor The Sand River corridor is one of the key wildlife corridors for elephants between the Maasai Mara National Reserve, Naimina Enkiyio - the Sacred Forest, and the Great Rift Valley near the Kenya-Tanzania border. A number of corridors are being identified in this area using geographic and elephant collar tracking data collected by the Mara Elephant Project (MEP). If elephants, which are a keystone megafauna species, can get through, so can everyone else. The corridor has an altitude variance of 1000 feet, and it links areas with incredible biodiversity. It is part of what keeps the Mara, Rift Valley, Serengeti, and Amboseli Ecosystems connected. Keeping corridors like this one open is critical because it allows wildlife and communities to access different resources at different times of the year and maintain ecosystem health and resilience to changes in climate. The area has traditionally been communally owned rangelands belonging to semi-nomadic pastoralist Maasai communities, but recent government policy changes mean the landscape is being subdivided and shared out into small individual titles. Parts of this wilderness area have already been fenced and converted into patchworks of small farms, which restrict connectivity and increases human-wildlife conflict. We and our partners CWCT, MEP and the Forest Guardians are working in partnership with communities along the corridor to develop effective land use plans that benefit them and keep this corridor open for them and for wildlife. We have also started to invest in developing alternative sustainable livelihood opportunities for communities, such as beekeeping and grow bags, which help to reduce human-wildlife conflict along the corridor. Tsutsubega Conservancy Our volunteers in Botswana are helping the Tsutsubega community (~ 500 people), who live on the southern edge of the Okavango just north of Maun, to begin the process of forming a community conservancy so they can benefit from the wildlife on their land. Laresoro Community Health Clinic Laresoro is part of the Kalama community conservancy which borders the Samburu National Reserve in Kenya. The Laresoro health clinic is the only clinic in the conservancy, and it currently serves over 2500 people. The clinic provides vital medical care to this pastoralist community who live alongside the area's wildlife. The community have some great plans for the expansion and improvement of the clinic, which include: - Developing a maternity facility to give the many women and girls who develop complications during pregnancy and childbirth a safe space to give birth with medical assistance. As you may know, childbirth is the biggest killer of teenage girls worldwide. - Building ablution facilities to meet the sanitation needs of the many patients visiting the facility. - Installing a solar-powered lights system and a solar-powered refrigerator so that staff can better tend to patients past daylight hours and better store medicines. - Building a perimeter fence which is crucial for security and will help reduce the potential for human-wildlife conflict for animals that enter the clinic grounds. These improvements will mean the 1250 women in the Kalama community conservancy will have a safe space to give birth with medical assistance; the community will have access to medicines that need refrigeration, such as vaccines and antivenom, and both the community and the wildlife they share their home with will be safer. We are raising funds for these improvements at the moment which will cost $97,200.
