DescCultivate:Cultivate programs introduce and re-orient students and adults through hands-on, industry-informed curriculum and workforce training. FirstHand STEM Education:FirstHand offers free year-round, project-based learning in partnership with local schools and community organizations, designed to provide skills-based career exposure. The FirstHand Lab is a connector for students from surrounding neighborhoods to the thriving entrepreneurial and innovation system in Greater Philadelphia and provides a real-world lab experience.Since the beginning of the program, in 2014, over 2,360 students in the surrounding West Philadelphia community gained a better appreciation for science, at the middle school level, and at the high school level discovered and began to consider the various career tracks in STEM or STEM-adjacent roles, as they prepare for a post-secondary education and/or career. Workforce Development: The Science Center's Workforce Development program seeks to connect Philadelphia residents to jobs at biotech companies in University City and beyond. The Science Center is committed to developing a strategic workforce development model that fits the needs of companies, strengthens the STEM talent pipeline, and benefits the community around us.In the first cohort in 2020, 22 participants without a traditional four year-college degree received STEM training. Mentors from local biotech companies engaged participants in at-home lab experiments using custom STEM kits.Desc

Part V, Line 4:The Esther M. Klein Endowment Fund supports Klein Gallery (EKG) operations, in an effort to promote art and science to the surrounding Philadelphia community.
Part X, Line 2:The Science Center is a tax-exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, although its consolidated entities, the Park, PTI, PIV, and SCEC, are for profit entities which are subject to income taxes. Total federal and state income tax expense from the consolidated entities was $-0- and $1,400,000 for the years ended December 31, 2020 and 2019, respectively. U.S. GAAP requires management to evaluate tax positions taken and recognize a tax liability, if the Center has taken an uncertain tax position that more likely than not would not be sustained upon examination by a government authority. Management has analyzed the tax positions taken by the Center, and has concluded that as of December 31, 2020 or 2019, there are no uncertain positions taken or expected to be taken that would require recognition of a liability or disclosure in the consolidated financial statements. The Center would recognize future accrued interest and penalties related to unrecognized tax benefits and liabilities in income tax expense if such interest and penalties are incurred. There were no income tax related interest and penalties recorded for each of the years ended December 31, 2020 or 2019.

Form 990, Part III, Line 4a, Program Service AccomplishmentsUrban Research Park: In 1963 the Science Center was built on the foundation of real estate at a time when labs and research facilities were needed for cross disciplinary and cross-institutional collaborations. Our focus on providing researchers and entrepreneurs with the resources to advance the commercialization of their technologies hasn't changed over the last 60 years. The way we serve them has evolved with the changing needs of the ecosystem and now includes an integrated combination of physical space and programs to advance science and technology innovation. Today, the campus-like complex consists of six buildings spanning 888,000 square feet of office and laboratory space. These buildings are part of the larger uCity Square campus developed in partnership with Wexford Science + Technology and Ventas, Inc. uCity Square consists of 27 acres, 17 buildings, 200 companies and over 10,000 people.
Form 990, Part III, Line 4b, Program Service AccomplishmentsConvene: Convene programs galvanize and amplify an inclusive innovation community. Quorum: Quorum serves as a central, neutral gathering space for the Greater Philadelphia's innovation community, offering a three-pronged approach to convening: a free 5,000 square foot drop-in lounge serving as an open workspace and informal meeting location; signature programming designed to connect innovators with the resources and people needed to grow their business; and a 10,000 square foot meeting facility available to rent. In 2020, Quorum attracted over 8,300 participants at in-person and virtual programs designed to continue connecting the community despite the pandemic. Since Quorum's inception in 2011, over 175,000 visitors have joined over 2,000 events on a wide array of business-related and personal topics. Venture Cafe Philadelphia: Part of the Venture Cafe Global Network in 10 cities around the world, Venture Cafe Philadelphia offers a place and content designed to connect with all the makers, doers and thought leaders across the region through unique content. The weekly events regularly draw a diverse group of guests, 44% of which were non-white and 51% of which are female. In 2020 Venture Cafe attracted over 7,000 participants through its mostly virtual Thursday Gatherings. Art: The Science Center uses the creative arts as a platform to explore relationships between art, science and technology. The Esther Klein Gallery exhibited the work of 64 artists from around the globe, in 2020 alone. And the BioArt Residency invites artists into the labs of uCity Square-based companies to explore the intersection of science and art and work alongside researchers. Volunteers: The Science Center has a wide network of volunteers enthusiastic to support our mission in a multitude of capacities. In 2020 the Science Center benefited from the time and expertise of close to 1,000 volunteers. Our commercialization programs engaged 100 business advisors, industry leaders, and experts to advise with startups, either one-on-one or in small groups. In 2020, our cultivation efforts through FirstHand and BULB (Building and Understanding Lab Basics) were aided by 68 STEM mentors from local biotechnology and life sciences companies who assisted in hands-on experiments and helped design curricula or served as BULB selection team members or mentors to BULB participants. Our convening efforts engaged 816 experts and thought leaders who presented at Quorum and Venture Cafe events in 2020. Venture Cafe also boasted 44 ambassadors who coordinated the various Thursday Gathering formats ensuring the in-person and online sessions ran efficiently.

Those startups went on to raise over $43 million in follow-on funds and create over 60 jobs. 45% of the startups were minority founded, 55% had a foreign-born founder, and 33% were led by female founders. QED Proof-of-Concept Program: The QED Program solicits life science R&D project proposals from leading research centers across PA, NJ, and DE. The key goal of the program is to retire the business risk in these early-stage projects, increasing their attractiveness to follow-on investment by life science companies and private investors. In 2020, the Science Center supported 15 projects through the QED program with three projects receiving a total of $600,000 in funding which is provided equally from the Science Center and the finalist's host institution. Since its inception in 2009, the QED program has provided development services for over 150 academic researchers with over $8 million invested in 44 projects. Fourteen startups or licensing deals have resulted. ic@3401: ic@3401 is a vetted community of startups, experts, investors, and resources designed to help early-stage businesses scale. Located at the intersection of academic, business and civic interests and serving as the hub for all Science Center commercialization activity, ic@3401 helps tech and tech-enables startups pilot prototypes, get first revenue, establish corporate partnerships, hire talent, and raise capital. Launch Lane participants receive funding, mentorship, introductions, and workspace at ic@3401. In 2020, the Science Center ran a Launch Lane cohort, investing $300,000 in seven startups. Those companies went on to raise close to $2 million in follow-on funding. A total of 35 companies have gone through the Launch Lane accelerator since 2015, generating $50 million in revenue, raising over $300 million in follow-on funding and creating 300 jobs. In 2020, 21 companies representing nine countries participated in four Global Soft Landing bootcamps. Sourcing Innovation: The Science Center connects industry and government to researchers through a mechanism that channels research partnership funds in exchange for an opportunity to license or partner with the researchers behind high-value technologies. Examples include the Science Center's participation in the DRIVe Accelerator Network, an initiative of the US Department of Health and Human Services' Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) that seeks to identify the most innovative products and technologies to protect Americans from the most serious systemic, natural and intentional health security threats.
