General: Approximate hours spent in social accountability projects and events: 2,975 The impact of non-quantifiable contributions Carlyle Place has on the greater Middle Georgia Area can be subdivided into the following areas: Advocacy, Community Involvement, Conduit for Using Donations, Economic Impact, Good Neighbors, Recognition, Responding to Needs, and Social Impact. The following narrative describes programs and volunteerism of our residents and staff members. Advocacy: Carlyle Place offers volunteer hours to the local chapter of the Alzheimer's Association. Community Involvement: Carlyle Place employees are active members of other community boards and committees, offering service to the surrounding community. Some examples of these civic agencies include: Leading Age, Georgia College & State University Music Therapy Department, Mercer University and Rotary Club of North Macon. Conduit for Using Donations: Opportunities exist for the residents, staff and members of the community to participate in quarterly projects. Each project has a list of items for donation to the following agencies: Daybreak, Family Advancement Ministries, Macon Rescue Mission, Loaves & Fishes, Macon's Warming Center and Sonny Carter Elementary. Through numerous recruitment opportunities and social media, the community is invited to participate in our projects. In addition, fundraisers are held through special events to raise money for The Alzheimer's Association. A Resident Assistance Fund was established to receive memorial and honorarium donations on behalf of our residents. In March 2019, we were able to begin providing financial assistance to two of our residents who have outlived their financial resources. Economic Impact: Carlyle Place attracts seniors from all over the country to relocate to the middle Georgia area. The residents purchase locally and utilize the healthcare services available to central Georgia. Offering a continuing service to the aging population addresses the needs of seniors throughout the remaining years of life. The community encourages local purchasing and investing in entertainment by offering transportation to community events, retail facilities, and healthcare agencies. Good Neighbors: Carlyle Place management encourages residents to recycle various items by offering pickup services at each resident's home on a weekly basis. The residents have organized a recycling service which picks up recycled items door to door and places them in the single stream recycling container acquired through Advanced Disposal. In addition, residents participate in an annual call for larger recyclables (electronics, TVs, Cell Phones, etc) which are collected and distributed to businesses and organizations to be disposed of properly. Donations can be made by residents to the local Goodwill Industries through our facility services department; this encourages the recycling of household goods rather than the items ending up in the landfill. During the refurbishment process, items in working condition are salvaged and donated to local housing service providers such as Macon Rescue Mission. Intergenerational engagement opportunities were offered to students of the following local schools and agencies: First Presbyterian Dayschool, North Macon Presbyterian Dayschool, Northway Church Preschool, Sonny Carter, Stratford Academy, and Georgia College & State University. Recognition: Carlyle Place is Macon Telegraph's 2020 Best of the Best - Retirement Facility. Responding to Needs: The Middle Georgia area has a significant number of individuals who are homeless. In response to the needs of the homeless population, the residents gathered supplies to be sent to Daybreak and Macon's Warming Center. Social Impact: Many residents have spent a lifetime investing time and talents into the communities in which they lived and worked. Now retired, many seek to give to the local community. For some this is no easy task due to physical challenges. As a result, the staff members and leadership team have worked together to create opportunities for the residents to give back to the community while never leaving the facility. Some of the opportunities include: making and delivering blankets for older children at The Children's Hospital, Atrium Health Navicent and making sack lunches for Loaves and Fishes ministries, delivered the 4th Tuesday of each month. The nurse in the wellness clinic has partnered with local universities to offer opportunities for practicing interviewing skills for students who will be entering the field of medicine. Mercer University sends medical students to learn how to assess and complete a poly-pharmacy review. The nursing students from Middle Georgia State University come to observe and interview the residents who visit the wellness clinic. Carlyle Place is one of the largest virtual practicum sites for Georgia College & State University's Music Therapy Department, offering practicum sessions to the students while also benefitting our residents through therapeutic programming. Service learning opportunities have been created for students in high school and college in the surrounding areas. Students volunteer by assisting our activity staff members in providing programming for the residents in our personal care homes and skilled nursing facility. We have 3 interns on staff with us, two working under the music therapist, and one working under social services. Some of the schools represented through this volunteer program include: ACE academy, Central High School, FPD, Howard High School, Jones County High School, Mercer University, Stratford Academy, Tattnall Square Academy, Savannah State University and Georgia College & State University. Volunteer Activities: Staff members and residents have volunteered time, talents, and made donations (both monetary and in-kind) with various agencies in the middle Georgia Community. The following is a list of agencies that have benefitted from those employed by Carlyle Place: Alzheimer's Association, American Heart Association, Daybreak, Family Advancement Ministries, Goodwill Industries, Loaves & Fishes, Macon Symphony Orchestra, Macon Volunteer Clinic, Middle Georgia State University, Georgia College & State University, Savannah State University, Mount De Sales, Second Baptist Church, and World Vision. The combined number of hours by the residents and staff members of Carlyle Place totaled over 7,000 hours. We had 210 volunteers during FY2020.
